A Guide to Kyoto, Japan Through the City's Craft Scene

"With walls clad in subtly gold-brushed washi paper, headboards upholstered in intricately patterned nishijin-ori silk, and suite interiors accented with kyo-karakami woodblock prints, local crafts take center stage at Roku Kyoto."

I will strongly recommend this quaint and charming hotel when you visit Kyoto. It went much beyond my expectations. The room was very clean, peaceful and comfortable. The host was like a relative helping me discover the gems of his city. He was so helpful in every way. The hotel is within walking distance to the temples and some really nice cheap restaurants and cafés.

Very accessible to the bus stop, use always bus #7 he said because its route is faster. Place is secured by its own guests through card locks. Free to use his traditional Japanese house 400 meters away with nice Japanese Garden. I love the landlord, Jun Goto for his tenacity in serving his guests. Watch out for the google map location as it will point you to the road behind his building.

I stayed Roku Roku to visit the shrines, and it was a lovely time. It's in an excellent location, close to the Philosophers' Path and many of the shrines and temples. The double room was spacious, clean, and comfortable. The price was good. I should especially call out the proprietor, who puts much effort into what he does and is used to dealing with foreigners who might not understand the protocols. He is very particular and has a system, but he is also very nice and will explain it all to you. When I next stay in Kyoto, I will come back to Roku Roku. Note: when I searched for Roku Roku on Google Maps, it directs you to a small cul-de-sac. That is actually the back of the property. The door is accessed from the south, on the road going up the hill from Shirakawa-dori.

I’ve stayed here for many times during past 7 years. It’s very clean, spacious and comfortable. It’s very close to the Philosophers Path so usually I start my day with a nice and quiet walk on it. It’s a bit far from Kyoto Station that’s a down side. However, it’s still very convenient with bus stop and supermarket nearby. By the way, there’s a “sento” nearby as well, very handy in a cold winter.

When I was first trying to find Roku Roku’s building, I called to ask directions. Instead of simply giving me the directions by phone, the proprietor, Mr. Goto, went out on a dark and snowy night to personally lead me there. ||||That’s exactly what you get if you stay in Roku Roku: a place that feels less like simple lodging and more like visiting the home of a beloved relative. Every detail is chosen with care and appreciation for the guest. I have lived in Japan for 2 and a half years, and during that period have stayed overnight in Kyoto at least ten times. From here on out, Roku Roku is going to be my lodging of choice. ||||To begin, the location is truly convenient; it’s next to a bus stop through which several major Kyoto bus lines pass. It’s easy to get to major stations within just 15-25 minutes; a taxi is only 1,000 yen. It’s just out of the way enough so that it’s quiet, but close enough that it won’t take long to go to where you want to visit.||||The rooms are furnished with everything you could wish for, including a kotatsu, a Japanese-style table with a heated blanket. Beds have electric blankets for the winter, which is a nice touch. They’re clean, comfortable, and a relief to come back to after a long day. There are plates and cutlery both in the room and downstairs (if you need extra), a refrigerator, a water heater (for tea), and more.||||That’s “Yado”, the main lodging building. Roku Roku’s other building is “Seki”, about a five-minute walk away from Yado (which in itself is two minutes from the bus stop). Seki is what you could consider the common area. It features a large room that looks out on a beautiful garden (and in the winter, when I visited, that large room has more of those kotatsu). There’s a kitchen with tea and soup, and even an upstairs area. If you want to take a load off but don’t wish to return to your hotel room quite yet, “Seki” is a great choice. You can read, hang out, do work, or anything else you may wish. ||As I said before, the owner shows a great deal of care and attention toward the guests. I visited around the New Year, which meant many schedule alterations for the places I wanted to visit. Mr. Goto helped me hammer out my plans, and even gave me some excellent recommendations. It ended up being a truly magical experience thanks to his expert advice. If you are unsure of anything, I definitely recommend speaking to him.||||I fully intend to stay at Roku Roku again. I felt relaxed, refreshed, and at home. It’s a treasure of a place, and I enthusiastically recommend it to anyone who wishes to stay in Kyoto. I stayed alone, but it’s perfect for friends and family traveling together, as well.

The twin room we stayed spotless, the beds were comfy. It's a bit far from city center of Kyoto. However, Roku Roku is a convenient location for a beautiful and cultural stroll to Philosopher's Path in quiet morning and a tour to Ginkaku-Ji Temple.||||The most spot-on thing in this stay was a breathtaking garden view in a breakfast place which we could be truly relaxed. This traditional Japanese house was about seven minutes away from the Inn by walking and for check-in, drinking tea and coffee, and breakfast.

Super clean, tidy, organized and well-maintained hotel. The room is spacious unlike traditional Japanese hostel. Price is reasonable. Discount 30% if you are introduced by a friend who used to live there (you need to provide your friend’s name or email address or phone number so that the owner can check on his system). The owner is 70-80 years old already - but stays healthy and energetic. Very close to: bus stop, family mart, food shops and specially, a public bath house. I will come back if I have chance.

I stay in roku roku whenever i visit kyoto. Its a perfect hostel for those who enjoy not only downtown(Kawaramachi) but real Kyoto where normally tourists do not go. Also there is a beautiful place called Seki where you have breakfast(You should request before) and tea. You will fall in love with Kyoto if you stay in Rokuroku being a bit apart from city life.
