Definitely not for solo traveller! I booked for exactly one person and when I came the waitress asked me - “oh is the second person not coming?”. Yeah - I travel on my own.
Despite that - this is definitely an institution with Giorgio Leopardi being the real charmer of the place.
It is worth a visit for the views and the retro experience - splendid 70s vibe. Go at the sunset - you can turn in 30-45mis. Order your main together with a starter - I waited 20mins for the menu to come back to me, and just ended up skipping main for hope of bundle of joy and comfort tiramisu always is.
What a surprise!!!
Tiramisu felt more like a generic layered cake with cream: some coffee flavour, hardly any mascarpone character and worst of all - served warm (I do understand it is warm in Durban but still…). Its texture was more dense and soggy than light and airy.
Sadly no staple Italian cocktails on menu - yet, when asked for negroni, which they pronounced cheekily “negaroni” (!!!) - it was quite decent.
For a place that trades so heavily on Italian branding, this was a real let-down and below par w even with a simple neighbourhood café in Rome. The setting is fun, service is polite, and the rotating panorama of Durban is unique, but the kitchen should seriously improve their efforts.
For comparison only - how the deser looked like earlier in the day at Mozambik… same price of the desert - completely different experience.
