The Best Things to Do on the Amalfi Coast

"A picturesque town known for its pastel-hued houses, artisanal shops, and chic hotel terraces. Visitors can enjoy boat trips to the Li Galli islands and visit the Roman Villa."

Amazing unexpected find in Positano! Wonderfully cool escape on a hot day. Guided tour in English was excellent. We were amazed by the vivid quality of the Roman wall painting here. The medieval section above was also interesting. You book yourself onto a tour at the nearby ticket office down the steps from the church and meet your guide at the alloted time in the courtyard in front of the church.

Very impressive. The frescos are in amazing shape, the colors are vivid, and the designs are clrealy visible. The church history is also very interesting. The temperature is cool, and the site is fairly accesible with not a lot of stairs. Further excavation is planned.

Core exposition consists of 3 walls with frescos of Roman villa built on 17 year of out century. On year 70 AD the villa was destroyed by nearby vulcany and covered by ash. That was amazing to see ancient beauty of colorful Roman frescos

The most preserved and stunning Roman frescoes I had the privilege to see. The guide was passionate and the tour was very informative and of adequate length. Can’t wait to see what they will uncover during the next phase of excavation. A cultural must in this environment of endless vacuous selfies and cheap lemon dresses!

This museum was a highlight of our time in Positano! It was so interesting to learn more about the history of the city that’s right under your feet. It’s a really fascinating 45-minute tour (ours was led by Elvira, who was so knowledgeable and passionate!) and I hope more people check it out. Also recommend reserving tickets online in advance.

A hidden gem. Amazing history right in the centre of Positano from Roman to Medieval. Our guide was excellent and knowledgeable. Book your tickets at the visitor centre and to find out tour times. At 15degC to keep the frescoes preserved it is also 45min out of the heat as well.

Absolutely fascinating that there is such rich history right below the streets. They have done a beautiful job starting to uncover the ancient villa and related items. Antonella was an awesome tour guide, very knowledgeable, comprehensive, and patient. Highly recommend taking this tour.

Very interesting experience, definitely recommend as something different to do if you like history. You buy tickets at the tourist office as it's small group guided tours only.

Yelp
Unbelievable. The M.A.R. museum offers tours that include two crypts under the main church, and the remains of a Roman Villa under the crypt. The crypts are very cool - the villa is unbelievable. Currently only one room of the villa has been excavated, but that includes two walls with the most spectacularly preserved frescos - way better than any of the walls in Pompeii. The details are so well preserved that there are still plaster reliefs of cherubs, sea horses, etc. on the walls. It was stunning. The whole tour is absolutely worthwhile - our tour guide was great and knew a lot about the site. She said they're currently working on excavating other sites in the vicinity - hopefully that's successful! Either way this is a can't-miss stop in Positano. The tour was quick, about 20 minutes, and worth every penny.
