We much enjoyed a four night return visit (after 19 years) to the Bulow Residenz, once the top boutique hotel in Dresden and now the junior sibling of the luxurious and nearby (200 m) Bulow Palais, under common ownership and management. Both are sensitive conversions of 18c urban mansions which survived WW2 and they are well located in a quiet part of Neustadt, just a pleasant ten minute walk over the Augustusbrucke to Theaterplatz. Guests in the Residenz have full access to the Palais, including its spa.||||The décor is meticulously traditional and includes interesting prints. Our ‘junior suite’ was a comfortable - if not luxurious - large room with a partition and an interior view. The bathroom offered only a shower over bath. Storage was excellent and everything worked. We couldn't decode how to control the heating system but it was essentially ok.||||Breakfast was an interesting and varied buffet with eggs cooked to order and attentive staff. No other catering or room service is offered, other than an honesty bar in the basement (with no wine?). So, in effect, the Residenz is a luxury b and b, with hotel facilities nearby.||||WiFi is free but sometimes slow and unstable. All the staff we met in the Residenz and Palais were very pleasant and helpful.||||We enjoyed dinner in both the Palais’ Bistro and Caroussel (one rosette) restaurants - both good value for the quality. But our most memorable dinner was in the basement Genuss Atelier, about 3 km further into Neustadt - highly recommended.||||Like a previous reviewer, we thought our reservation was in the Palais but we were told by the travel agent (Travel Republic) a few weeks ahead that it was in fact in the Residenz - take it or leave it, €65 compensation for their error! ||||Overall, a unique and good value - if not luxury - experience. Recommended to those who appreciate comfort but don’t need Four Seasons style.
