A New Side of the Black Forest—From Designer Cuckoo Clocks to Revitalized Bathhouses | Condé Nast Traveler

"Set in the Münstertal valley, this family-run inn-restaurant marries deep-rooted tradition with playful innovation. I sat in a parlor that looks much as it did a century ago, talking with chef Viktoria Fuchs—35, trained under Douce Steiner at the two-Michelin-starred Hirschen in Sulzberg and seasoned at Luce d’Oro (now Ikigai) at Schloss Elmau—who came home because she’s “the homesick type” and, with her husband Johannes Schneider, took over the kitchen when her sister began managing the hotel. The seasonal menu keeps close to Black Forest classics—black pudding brägele, sauerbraten, and fried potatoes—while delighting in rule-breaking touches like dim sum made from wild boar sourced from the hotel’s hunting grounds, plus berries preserved in rum and sugar and Münstertal venison. The result respects the path of tradition even as it tries something new." - Christine Mortag

Fantastic service, AMAZING food, and super friendly staff! We came with our rather reactive dog and everyone was glad to find us tables/spaces to accommodate him without making us feel like he was an issue ☺️ I love how personal the hotel felt, from the service to the decorations showing the generations of history in the place. We hope to come back next year when the new Wellness-Bereich is open!!! I have only one tiny comment - since the space is very dog friendly (we were far from the only guests with dogs!) perhaps a designated trash can somewhere in front of/to the side of the hotel for disposing of dog waste could be helpful? Thank you for an amazing stay!

We found this place through a restaurant guide and on our way from Italy to Germany we decided to stop for a night. The location is very beautiful, peaceful and relaxing. The hotel is very big and has plenty of space and did not feel very crowded despite it had a lot of rooms and guests that weekend. The relaxation areas with the pool and separate with a garden were very nice, though the pool was rather crowded. The garden was very relaxing and had small river passing by as well as sauna on the open air. The restaurant has to be a separate story - classic but with excellent execution, fresh ingredients and great service with outstanding wine list, totally deserved Michelin to mention! The room was very spacious and comfortable though was very classic village house style but had its charm. The parking inside is paid, outside is free and there were plenary of spots to leave the car. Definitely will be going back whenever we have a chance even if we have to travel there specifically for that! P.S. only issue we had that our credit card was charged twice for the dinner and it took a while and a couple of emails to resolve, but no problem of getting money back for the dinner crew charge.

Stayed for a business meeting but will certainly return for a pleasure break! EVERYTHING was simply perfect from the super attentive and friendly staff to the amazing food and ambiance. Nothing was too much trouble for the team and we were made to feel very pampered. Thank you for making a work trip such a memorable experience.

We returned to the hotel after a wonderful stay 20 years ago. Unfortunately it didn’t live up to our previous experience. Generally this is a lovely hotel in a beautiful setting. The hotel gets many things right, however it fell down on a couple of important points. Firstly when we came down to breakfast on the first morning we were shown to an empty overflow area some considerable distance away from the main dining room where breakfast was being served. Sitting in this area would have involved carrying our breakfast up stairs and through the narrow reception area. The main dining area was not full therefore we asked to have one of the empty tables where we enjoyed an excellent breakfast. We were therefore surprised when we came down to breakfast the next day to be shown to the overflow dining area again when the main dining room was empty! Once again we had to ask to be seated in the main dining area. |The second problem arose because we had pre-booked half board. We had stated that one of our party was a pescatarian however, we were all treated as non meat eaters. There was no choice and on the first night we were all served fish. The second night we asked what was on the half board menu to be told we all had a non meat pasta option. We chose not to have this and to eat off the a la carte menu. This too was disappointing because we waited almost one hour between our starter and main course. When we asked where our food had got to we were told another larger order had been placed ahead of ours by mistake! When the food arrived it was delicious but spoilt by the wait. |When we raised our concerns with the hotel owner we received an apology and were offered a free bottle of wine. It would have been better if we had not had to complain though.
