Ronneburg Restaurant – Amana, Iowa - Gastro Obscura

"Traveling to the Amana Colonies in Iowa is more like a trip back in time to 19th-century Germany than a visit to America’s heartland. These seven villages were settled in the 1850s by German immigrants escaping religious persecution. Communal living was the foundation of the culture in the Amana Colonies. For decades, residents would cook and eat together in communal kitchens scattered across the villages. Today, visitors can dine in one of those historic communal kitchens, which now houses a restaurant serving hearty, authentic German fare. The Oehler family transformed the space into a restaurant in 1950. The name “Ronneburg” comes from a fortress in Hesse, Germany where the ancestors of Amana sheltered from persecution centuries ago. Guests can dine on schnitzel and spätzle along with other favorites such as brats and pork tenderloin in a welcoming atmosphere. Platters are available for individual entrees with a selection of sides. Or, you can channel the communal history of the Amana Colonies and choose to dine family-style instead. Co-owners and siblings Liz Busch and Doug Cox go the extra mile in the kitchen. They say, “[W]e tenderize and bread our schnitzels in house. The strawberry-rhubarb jam served with breakfast is made in house as well. Most of our meat comes from the Amana Meat Shop here in [the Amana Colonies]. The bread served at lunch & dinner is from the Amana Bakery down the street. Our spätzle is brought in from Germany.” For dinner, Busch suggests, “[I]f you want a true German dish, I recommend the Sauerbraten which is one of our specialties. It’s marinated beef in a special blend of seasonings and sweet and sour sauce made with Amana wine.” Know Before You Go The restaurant is closed on Tuesdays." - ccafaro77

Amazing meal as always. We’ve been coming to Amana for around 20 years. No visit here is complete without a meal at one of the family-style dinner restaurants here (there are around 3 of them). We favor the Ronneburg. Tonight (Friday), they were busy but we got seated right away. Our server was Annette and she took great care of us. We started out with a couple of Iced Teas and water. As we knew what we wanted for dinner, we gave our order to Annette right away. We shared the following family style meals: - Bavarian Chicken (served with Spatzle) - Broasted Chicken (served with Spatzle) - Cold family style dishes served before dinner: whole pickled beets, coleslaw, cottage cheese with chives, bread and butter - Hot family styled dishes served with the main dinner entree: sauerkraut, green beans, fried potatoes and brown gravy The cold dishes were all excellent. The green beans were surprisingly good with onion and bacon, the fried potatoes were excellent. We ate about 1/3 of our meals, ordered a slice of coconut cream pie to go and boxed up all the leftovers (mains and sides). We’ll eat on all of this for two days! Thank you Annette and thank you Ronneburg for another great experience.

My wife and I ordered two different sandwiches, a schnitzel and a brat. When they came we couldn't really tell the difference in them. They were covered with lots of carmelized onions, which we do like but this was a lot. Lots of cheese on both sandwiches and when combined with silk of the onions, made the sandwiches difficult to eat because they kept falling apart from all of the liquid from the melted cheese and onions. We were surprised at how bland they were also. I ordered the fried potatoes which although very tasty were just the opposite of the sandwiches, very dry. Although our waiter was very nice the on duty host was not very personable.

Google
Wonderful family-style breakfast we fondly remember. Food was great as was the service. Little bummed there weren't any fried potatoes or sausage, but we all still left full. Glad to see this Amana tradition continue!

Google
We had a wonderful time here and the food was delicious. There was hardly anyone in the restaurant when we went, so there was no wait on the food.

Google
I ordered the Reuben sandwich with fries, which was so good! It had great flavor and was high-quality. The service was helpful, friendly, and quick. They were able to make a sweet and fruity mocktail for me. Quiet, relaxed atmosphere. I am looking forward to going back here and trying more!

Google
Brat was good. They are skimpy on the Kraut. Pie...I didn't care for. Not homemade, or if so, not great. Too much jelly and minamal strawberry or rhubarb pieces.

Google
Had breakfast. Eggs and potatoes were good. For some reason, the bacon and sausage didn't seem very hot. But the German pancakes were to die for!!!

Allan

Google
Just a decent comfort food place for the different varieties of schnitzel, sausage, green beans, coleslaw and etc. it is on the more expensive side but it has all you can eat sides which does make sense when you get the family style

Yelp
I was in Coralville for work and heard about the Amana Colonies. Sadly we didn't realized almost everything closes at 5pm so we didn't get to browse a lot of shops. Luckily the restaurants stay open until 7 or 8pm. Parking was plentiful in the touristy town. Ronneburg had a very old German village feel with creaky wooden floors and small, interlocking dining rooms. Our waitress was friendly and offered recommendations. They offered local brewed beer, Millstream, mediocre and very light or German imports. For entrees, you can order either a platter or family style (about $5 more per person with 4 additional sides and unlimited refills). We decided family style and ordered boasted chicken (pressure fried chicken) and paid the $1.50 more for all white meat (2 wings and 2 breasts) and sausage platter. Sausages are made locally at the Amana Smoke house. You get 1 each of smoked sausage, smoked bratwurst and fresh bratwurst. Chicken breasts were crispy, but the meat was a bit dry. Sausage were great and flavorful and served with a coarse mustard. We liked the fried sliced potatoes, Amana style cottage cheese and green beans. The coleslaw was too heavily dressed in mayonnaise and clumpy. You won't leave Ronneburg hungry!

Yelp
4.25* (out of 5) Food: 4* Atmosphere: 3* Value: 5* Service: 5* 01/21/2024 My wife found this place online and wanted to stop for a meal, so we ate brunch here on the way out of town after our weekend stay in Amana. It is inside an older traditional brick building and has a lot of character, actually reminding me of walking into a centuries-old restaurant in Europe. The basic colonial decor fits the character of the 19th century Colonies theme with a penchant for the color burgundy throughout the restaurant. I gave the atmosphere an average rating - clean and historic, yet also a bit aged. The service, quality and value of the food though is what stood out to me from our visit. Max W. was our server and he was very attentive, full of suggestions and made the experience quite enjoyable. My wife ordered the Ronneburg Melt with Fried Potatoes and I ordered the Schnitzel Sandwich with Pickled Beets (see picture below). I don't have pictures of the meals and while I can't seem to get it posted on the website, here is the link for the Reel on Instagram, showing the food and the interior of the restaurant: https://www.instagram.com/reel/C2X3ldoOvdA/. Yelp
Loved this cute German inspired restaurant. With a lot of old school pictures and German clothing hung on the walls. Super cozy and quaint feel the moment you walk in. It felt as if we got transported into Germany for breakfast. The people working here were very friendly. Right away the host sat us down and brought us a high chair for our son plus some crayons and coloring paper. So nice! The server her name was Tammy and she came right away to greet us and was super understanding about our gluten allergy. She brought our drinks and then we ordered but my husband was having a hard time choosing something since he does not eat pork so she offered to get him a veggie omelet which was so nice of her to do. I got #1 bacon, eggs, fried potatoes and no toast since I'm allergic to gluten. The potatoes were so delicious and crispy. The breakfast felt as if we were at home from how good and homey it tasted. Definitely recommend this place to anyone coming to visit the Amanas. We hope to be back again next time we are in town.

Yelp
I'm giving 5 stars, even though the server was a bit inexperienced. The restaurant is a piece of history, and on May Fest local women sang in high German and danced around the Maypole right in front of the restaurant. As befits its utilitarian communal kitchen heritage, the restaurant serves all meals for many hours. I had the sauerbraten and a local rhubarb wine (sold across the street), and both were excellent. Neither is my preferred dish nor drink, but I enjoyed both very much. I felt like I could be in the Rhineland, along the river, enjoying a vacation, instead of a short drive off the interstate in Iowa. Highly recommended.

Yelp
Always a great experience whenever I come home to visit family and friends in CR! Not only is the food selection quite decent, the quality is excellent! Also, the staff is amazing and very accommodating. For anyone attempting to decide between Ronneburge and Ox Yoke Inn . . . spare yourself the time and nix the Ox Yoke Inn; the staff at OYI are rude, unkempt, clearly unhappy, and I suspect homophobic . . . not good qualities to possess at all in this day in age.

Yelp
Great food! Great service! Highly recommend!!! The best pickle beets and cottage cheese we have ever had!! Looking forward to our next trip to Amana Colony to eat here again!!

Yelp
This was some pretty good German food for a good value. Staff was friendly and service was quick. We only ordered some quick schnitzel sandwiches for lunch and would be curious to come back and order a larger dinner.

Yelp
We were quickly seated on a Sunday afternoon and cheerfully greeted by our waitress (sorry, don't know her name). The dining room we sat in was to the right of the entrance and had lots of tables. Unfortunately we were seated next to some noisy eaters, but we chose to stay where we were seated. I had the Jaeger Schnitzel Sandwich on marbled rye and it was nice and tender, not overly fried and came with tomato slices, dill pickle slices and lettuce. My son had the Chicken Schnitzel Sandwich with a side of coleslaw. That coleslaw was incredible! Very creamy and delicious! The mushroom gravy that came with both sandwiches was good, not great, but still good. I enjoyed our "traditional" food and would recommend you to try it out when in Amana.

Yelp
What a fabulous breakfast experience! Do you ever have a bite of something and it takes you back to your childhood? Well, I had that happen at Ronneburg Restaurant and you can to. I was in town for a wedding and woke up needing some breakfast. Stat. We drove down the street to see what was open and the Ronneburg Restaurant look happening. We were seated right away. And while they offer a family-style all you can eat breakfast ($16)-- I was in a hurry so I ordered a short stack with eggs, bacon, hash browns and toast. The pancakes came out first and are literally have the best pancakes in town. They're super thin with crispy edges. You didn't even need syrup, seriously. They tasted just like my Aunt Mary's pancakes. I could remember my childhood summers with her in Norway, IA. Divine. The made-in-house strawberry rhubarb jam also was amazing. The service was impeccable. (I don't use that word often, but it truly was.) The pricing was on point. Parking is a non-issue. The breakfast menu was small and offered all the classics, nothing crazy. This Amana gotta-try is open Wednesday through Monday (closed Tuesday) and serves up breakfast 8-10:30am each day it is open. Check it out... and order the pancakes.

Yelp
When in Rome eat like a Roman... Well in our case eat like a happy German, because that's exactly what we did this fine and warm morning. We decided to go with the family style breakfast and almost immediately plates and plates of delicious food started hitting the table. We had eggs and potatoes, ham and bacon, fresh fruit and toast and it was all you can eat. Overall if I squinted just a bit I'm sure I would think I was in some gasthaus in the black forrest and not the middle of Iowa. The food was fresh and plentiful and the prices were really good for all that you got, a must go when in Amana, Aloha

Yelp
Many reviews describe this as family style, which it is if you're with a group. If you're a single or couple, or even foursome, you order individual entrees as anywhere else. Our side of coleslaw came quickly and--because we were hungry--consumed it before the bacon hamburger and breaded pork loin sandwich arrived 10 minutes later. However, both sandwiches were worth the wait. The burger was juicy and the loin had a wonderfully mild breading over the large meat portion. The breading could have used a little more seasoning. I would have liked a sauce other than mustard or catsup to add a muy more moisture to the meat. Service was helpful and unobtrusive. At 11:30am we had no wait in a Friday. The restaurant, though, started quickly filling thereafter.

Karen R.

Yelp
I had the Jager schnitzel and it was very good.. However, the potatoes were greasy and overcooked. Green beans had ham and a gravy sauce over them..not hot, barely warm. My husband had an overpriced chicken salad with the dreadful, cheap iceberg lettuce! For $12 you could shell out for a nice spring mix or Roamaine. Hardly any chicken in it.. Emma was a friendly server.

Yelp
Sauerbraten & German Chocolate Pie .... My husband was in heaven! We only had part of a day in the Amana Colonies, but we weren't going to miss out on having some good German food. My husband is always craving Sauerbraten and not every German restaurant serves it. Thank goodness Ronneburg Restaurant did! You can eat family style even if there is just two of you. We decided to go with the Bavarian Chicken Platter and ordered the Sauerbraten ala carte. With the platter you are getting their awesome creamy coleslaw, green beans in mushroom sauce with ham, fried potatoes and tolls. It fit the bill for the two of us. We could not leave without some pie and it was a bonus to be the German Chocolate. I was worried I would only get one bite and my husband the rest. Because it was a rich pie and my husband loves me I got more than one bite of pie. It is a treat to dine in a house-style restaurant. We enjoy the coziness and the sound level. Nicole C took great care of us and was very knowledgeable of the menu. If you are in the area you should check this place out.

Yelp
Wait was about 10 minutes on a Sunday afternoon around 1:30pm. My pretzel with beer cheese was really good. Customer service was excellent. 4/5 because the restaurant is so dated it makes me feel a little icky. Fairly confident Ronneburg could remodel and still keep the charm. The menu on their website didn't match the menu we were given in the restaurant. Very few vegetarian and 'light lunch' options. Would go back to try the pie.

Yelp
We came for a German dinner and we weren't disappointed. Two great dishes in beef and pork. An Excellent Bread on the side. I had a terrific lager beer that had won 14 awards. My wife had a nice Malbec. Tammy, our server treated us like we lived in town. Warm and personable.

Yelp
Nice ambiance of old world Deutschland! Great tasting food and large portions. Went last week during Octoberfest! Really nice time.

Yelp
Ronneburg restaurant is a great German restaurant in Amana. Many choices, great food. Try it family style

Brita R.

Yelp
I went to the Ronneburg Restaurant in Amana for breakfast with family. We all ordered our food Family-Style. We were all disappointed with our service and with our food. Oue food took forever to get to us and they weren't even busy. And to add to that, our food was cold when it got to our table. Our waitress hardly ever came around to our table to refill our drinks or even check on how we were doing. The best part of breakfast was their rhubarb jelly and their well-known very thin and crispy pancakes, but that was really the only good part of our visit. Disappointing experience.
google avatar

Mary R.

Yelp
Bavarian chicken was tasteless, dry and tough. The other dish said it was covered in mushroom gravy. The gravy was served in a plastic cup......unacceptable.

Yelp
I really wanted to love this place! It was the only place open when we got to our b&b in Amana .. I had high hopes because it's a German town but was comparing this place to the best German restaurants in Atlanta. The vibe was super outdated, were talking checkered tableclothes and all We arrived at 730ish on a Monday night & it was pretty quiet inside, not surprising because the town is small anyway. The lighting is dark inside but not mood lighting, intentional dark. I ordered the schnitzel & it tasted like unseasoned breaded pork + hollandaise that tasted like just mayonnaise, no flavor. They also gave a scoop of overcooked green beans & some thinly sliced potatoes. I'm not sure what the potatoes were supposed to be but they were a mix of soft and crunchy, visibly oily. The potatoes were the best part though and the overcooked green beans second. They also served some plain rye and white bread, untoasted with butter. My husband got a sandwich & Cole slaw was very mayonnaise heavy. Overall, nothing stood out as good or a repeatable meal. We're not picky eaters whatsoever so we ate it because it wasn't bad, just wasn't good either. Parking is limited but if you park in front of any business, the walk isn't far on this street

Yelp
This was breakfast. Bacon was salty. Sprouted bread had a lot of butter the way I like it and asked for it. Fried potatoes were good with a few crispy ones. Loved the nuts in the sprouted bread.

Yelp
Went here after the Ox Inn ran out of the special and we waited 25 minutes for it. Ordered arias beef sandwich- it was delicious!

Yelp
Recently had a fantastic breakfast at this Amana institution I say this because it has been around many years. The breakfast was family style and the quantities that you get are unbelievable. The thin pancake was excellent and the jam is excellent also. Eggs were cooked to perfection as was the fried potatoes and sausage. I truly loved the breakfast and I live 28 miles from this business. I will definitely go back more and more. The service was great and the server Laura was fantastic Great place.....

Yelp
We came for breakfast and had the family style meal. Three adults and one toddler. They were super accommodating to our toddler and quick to being out fruit he could snack on while we waited for our meal. The German pancakes are so good and the entire meal felt like the best home cooking you could come across! We loved the atmosphere and the food and can't wait to come back for lunch and dinner! Don't forget to call and get a reservation!!

Mark I.

Yelp
Great tasting "family style" entrees. The "family style" option is the best choice to taste all the delicious sides. Look forward to returning.

Yelp
Thoroughly enjoyed all the great German food served here in Amana on our summer RV road trip through the area. Ordered several items, including the Rouladen, Hahnchen Schnitzel, pork sausages, pork chop, reuben sandwich, coleslaw, and pickled beets. They were all delicious and we devoured them completely. I personally ordered the Dunkel beer as I recalled enjoying it at Epcot in Disney World a couple years ago and it really hit the spot yet again.

Yelp
Great meal! Each year that we come to Oktoberfest in Amana, IA, we make a point of having a meal at Ronneburg. This year, 12 of us ate family style. I had the broasted chicken. So good! Before the meals come out, bowls of all the side dishes were passed around the table. This year they served: - White and Rye breads with butter - Whole pickled beets - Coleslaw - Cottage Cheese - Green beans - Sauerkraut Then with our meals, bowls of fried potatoes were served family style. Great food, great service. Highly recommended.

Mike Z.

Yelp
Cute place, great staff. Love the coleslaw and the cottage cheese. Both these get a star. Otherwise this place would get ZERO. the green beans were canned, the sauerbraten, schnitzel, and Bavarian Chicken were all chewy and obviously microwaved (my guess is they had all been reheated multiple times. I was embarrassed I took my family here. The gravy and mashed potatoes were horrible (I honestly couldn't believe how bad they were). I came here 20 years ago multiple times on road trips. I wish I'd kept those happy memories of this place. Because now they have been dashed by a sore jaw from chewing down the reheated, blan mess we were served.

Yelp
The Ronneburg is my favorite restaurant in all of Amana. I've been eating here since an infant in a car seat, so I suppose I could be called biased. That being said I will endeavor to make my review as unbiased as possible. This restaurant is located in the main drag close by several shops and such. Its located in what I would call a row house, but I'm not sure if thats the correct term. Their is several stairs to get into the location but if you can't get up they have added a ramp around the back of the restaurant that leads you into the back dining room. The decor is charming and is definitely going for the German country home type feel. It is very clean and there are several dining rooms so you should be able to go there with a good size party. I have been in the area more than once over the last few months and so I wanted to try a couple different things on the menu rather than just my go to, the sauerbraten. Their sauerbraten is what i would call a spicy one, though not as in hot. Their sauce is very seasoning heavy and not as "sour" as some recipes. It is delicious. The meat is more than enough for two meals for me, so do keep that in mind. Especially when you get their Family Style dinner, which is a must. It comes with my favorite item on the menu since I was a child, the cottage cheese. Normally I would not comment on a side dish like that, but it comes mixed with chopped chives, and even though I have tried to recreate it many times at home, theirs is just better. My table goes through multiple servings of it per meal, which is great because you get unlimited refills of any of the sides with the family style meal. The only thing its missing in the red cabbage, which they only serve during their holiday meals. Last time I was there I did try their Rouladen. It was good, but not amazing. It was kinda dry unfortunately, but the side of German mustard that i asked for did help. When I compare the value of the sauerbraten to the value of this meal the sauerbraten wins by a mile if for no other reason then the amount of food you get. If you like Rouladen though, I would still say its worth a try. In the past their pies have been excellent, so I would still recommend them if you have room to eat dessert. The last few visits I havent, so I don't have an up to date review on them. Overall, i will continue to visit and enjoy the Ronneburg whenever i am in the area and will continue to enthusiastically proclaim them as the best Amana restaurant to anyone who will listen.

Brian B.

Yelp
The most authentic German food in Eastern Iowa. Moreover, it tastes great. My favorite is the sauerbraten. The wiener schnitzel & traditional bratwurst are tasty too. For dinners, sides are served family style -- to share. Nice environment & good service. There is plenty of parking in the back.

Yelp
I'm sorry Yana the new owner has seriously failed at taking over the reigns at this place! The menus are getting smaller and the options are less, we could only order our eggs over easy or scrambled but they came out over hard? And when I say the menu is smaller i mean literally ! It was half the size of a post card, but the beer and wine menus were still on the table at 8am? And these things are giant compared to the food menu. And we had to prompt the server for everything except the check. Oh and the food was not great at all! The pancakes that we asked for with our food was obviously not made to be served that way they were cold and rubbery, a fine compliment to the over cooked eggs. Breakfast is the easiest meal to cook short order I have turned a 100 seat restaurant over multiple times by myself. With a menu 20 times bigger than the stamp you get here. Maybe just man up and do full menu so the staff you have can get better at doing it rather than getting better at giving excuses to why doing less would be better? Or maybe come up with a different menu that would better compliment the level of skill your staff has? Start with a PB&J ... sorry a peanut butter and jelly sandwich. Maybe in these times you start looking at reducing your seating to help with staff shortages and keep the food options available to the customer? I don't think removing omelettes would help the kitchen? Maybe get the owner back there to help? Im guessing that's to much as the staff berated him for not coming in to open again? He showed up 30 min after opening and never said a word to us until he came and just took our fourth chair asking if it's ok as he's walking away with it. Plenty of other tables with chairs that no one was sitting at. Still no hi or how's is everything. I remember when the owner would come talk to us no matter what or how busy it was if she saw me she would take 20 seconds to ask how I was that makes waiting longer for food a lot easier to handle especially if that means more than 4 menu options? 4 ? This has been a favorite spot of mine for 2 decades! I will miss it, Yana you are missed!

Yelp
Party of 3. 12:35pm Saturday afternoon. No wait. We got lucky with parking. Our server was Tammy. Service was amazing. I haven't been to the Amana's for at least 15 years. I really couldn't take a lot of pictures of the inside, because the ambience would just be ruined. Put your phones down here, folks and take it in, It's lovely. Square tables, oak chairs, wood flooring, beautiful old hutches filled with farmhouse German type decor. I believe there 3 dining rooms and a bar. All food was delicious. We had onion rings, fried mushrooms, mozzarella sticks, chicken schnitzel, hamburger, fries and the star of my lunch was the Poutine. I've never heard of it until recently. I was a little surprised it was on the menu, it's typically a Canadian dish. So, in my typical fashion, I HAD to order it. Then we were off to dessert. Apfel something-or-other. It was sliced like a pie, but more like an apple cinnamon, chocolate custard topped onto a decadent yellow cake, finished off with real whipped cream,

Yelp
Cute place with a unique atmosphere. Only 4 options for breakfast on the weekend, but the helpings were satisfying. On this day the place was a little busy and so my food was cold. Staff was friendly. Strawberry rhubarb jam on toast was the highlight. For the only breakfast place in town--it fit the bill.
google avatar

Suellina F.

Yelp
We had reservations for a large group, they were for 5:30. Grated it was a holiday weekend, but there was an event going on in town. The food was very good, but being served home style with the options to refill, you should have the food to refill. As we started getting additional items, the waitstaff was coming out saying " that was all we had left of that" or, "we are out of that".. We by no means left hungry, we were full. I think the key is to get there early, to avoid getting limits or no refills. Lots of seating, prices were comprible to the area.

Yelp
We stopped here while exploring the National Historic Landmark Amana Colonies. This is an authentic German food restaurant. I've never been a big fan of German cuisine, but the Ronneburg just made a believer out of me. My wife wasn't hungry so she had a garden salad, which was pretty standard. I had the family style Wiener schnitzel, which was accompanied by unlimited sides of pickled beets, cottage cheese (with chives-a nice touch), sauerkraut, green beans , spaetzle, and sliced potatoes, along with brown and white slices of bread. I washed it down with a local Millhouse root beer while my wife had a wheat beer brewed at the same place. A slice of apple pie ala mode was the finale. The food was really good and if the schnitzel had been fresh, it would have easily been a five star experience. It is still a solid four, nonetheless, 4.5 if the scoring system allowed. The service was very good and the prices were reasonable. Like the Terminator, I'll be back.

Yelp
Holy smokes!!!! This place was unreal. 5 of us went for breakfast- 3 adults and 2 children. We each got breakfast and beverages. Every single thing was fantastic. The wait staff was kind and caring (we think her name was Tammy). They found coloring pages for my children. The strawberry rhubarb jam that was served my son even said "Mom! I could put my whole head in this!" It was fantastic. My daughters pancake was fantastic- tasted like a funnel cake. The coffee was good. Eggs, sausage, toast, omelets, potatoes- all amazing. There wasn't one thing we didn't like. We all agreed that whenever we come back to Amana to go shopping, this will be a staple in the day.

Yelp
Nice family-style experience in Main Amana. Free parking, Gluten free and dairy free accommodations available. Beer Haus just up the street, and several authentic Amana-businesses remain including the woolen shop, general store, brewery, and some B&Bs and camping nearby.

Yelp
We were on our way to Chicago from Kansas City when we stumbled upon the little town of Amana. Great small town and the people were very friendly. We decided to stop by the Ronneburg Restaurant for lunch. The food was really good. We ordered family style and chose the Broasted Chicken dish and a side of the Jäger-Schnitzel cutlet. The family-style option also came with a lot of side dishes. The sauerkraut was the highlight of all the side dishes. It was not stinky or too sour like ones we'd get at the store. It was just the perfect tanginess and has a kick of spice. The next best was cottage cheese. Like the sauerkraut, it wasn't stinky. It was savory and perfectly paired with their bread. The other sides were just average. The broasted chicken was delicious! Definitely one of the best western-styled fried chicken I had. It's crispy and juicy, but it wasn't too oily. The dish was also flavorful enough without any ketchup or sauces. I highly recommend eating it with sauerkraut because it cuts the grease really well! The schnitzel was a little disappointing, though. We could tell it wasn't fresh and it dried out a lot. Overall, the food was really good and I would certainly come back if I'm ever in the area again just for the broasted chicken and sauerkraut. It would be interesting to see if they have any Oktoberfest events!

Yelp
I would drive three hours instead of two to get a delicious meal here again. Not only was the food a touch of heaven but the service was the best we had in years! Our server Deanna went out of her way to be so gracious and on point bringing drink refills before we even asked. Relaxing music and a quaint atmosphere made my meal that much more enjoyable. We also tried the rhubarb and coconut team pie which ended the meal perfectly. This is a family run business and that much more reason to keep small business alive. *****Special note*** If you order the family dinner on the right of the menu you get refills on all the sides. Baby pickled beets, home made coleslaw. chive cottage cheese, fried potatoes, bacon green beans, sour kraut, gravy and home made white and wheat bread. So so good********

Yelp
We came in just after the breakfast time frame. We were all a little saddened that we missed breakfast but I can tell you none of us went away hungry. We walked through a couple rooms to be seated by the window in a room that looked like a second add-on. It was a bigger room that then connected to the bar that connected to the little shop. A unique building to say the least. The waitress was helpful as much as she could with our questions about gluten free, but didn't have a lot of options. My lunch guest got the salad to stay within her dietary needs. I decided to try the Ruben with a side of house coleslaw. The Ruben sandwich was fairly large with a pickle and the dressing on the side. For the price I thought it would be a little more meat, but it was good along with the coleslaw option. They had paper napkins and paper place mats on older tablecloths. The room was really chilly which kind of turned me off a little. It was just slightly turning cooler outside but it seemed like the heat wasn't on yet. The waitress checked on us once and didn't really pay us much attention after that until it was time for the check. You take your check up front and pay as you go out the door, which is crowded cause it is a really cramped entrance area. The options for German food were good and I wished I was braver, but I was such a mind set to have breakfast that I just wasn't in the mood.

Yelp
So hardly any vegan options. We had the dinner salad and hands down the German house made salad dressing was the best I've ever tasted. We had fries too and I had a piece of rhubarb pie which was so scrumptious! God I miss rhubarb living in TX! Service was great!

Yelp
Delicious German food. We chose to have our dinner served family style. All of the sides are delicious and you can have as much as you want but save room for your dinner. We had chicken schnitzel and pork schnitzel. For dessert we had the German chocolate pie. All were extremely tasty. I would have given 5 stars but they were out of sauerbraten!

Yelp
A great place. Had a wonderful dinner here, Oct. 2, 2022. . Just leave room for pie. Casual, relaxing environment.

Yelp
Of the two remaining options in main Amana, I feel like this the Ronneburg is the better option. The service has always been friendly and courteous; the servers are never in a hurry to rush you out the door. On my most recent with family members, I ordered sauerbraten. The sides of the day were a broccoli pasta salad and a cranberry relish, along with the other usual accompaniments. Sauerbraten had a good vinegar taste to it and the meat was fork-tender. Green beans are served with bacon and onions and are delicious as well. My only comment is I wish the product offerings were more consistent. On one visit, I was served red cabbage with my sauerbraten, which is an excellent accompaniment. This has not been available on any other occasion. They also make a delicious sauerkraut salad/relish that is only available in very small quantities. This, however is a minor gripe and should not deter you from visiting. Pricing is friendlier than the Ox Yoke as well.

Yelp
Taking a little weekday stroll around the Amana Colonies and its a pick between 3-4 restaurants; so instead of weelding my Yelp magic i took a pick by the freindly exterior fascade and make sure there are cars in the lot!! This place was busy and the little home style entryway was bustling, luckily by a large dining party soo my party of two got right in. The place is warm and cozy and the wait staff were attentive Dutch/German friendly. the food was served in good manner and the quality was impressive, still wanted a pounded weinersnitzel but picked the place that does'nt have that aggresive metal tenderizor hammer, all the sides were authentic, spaetzle was a little dry. All in all a good cozy choice for the day but will try to enhance my true international flare somewhere in the Colonie next trip; give this one a try because its got charm.

Yelp
I popped in after the Amana Prelude to Christmas festivities and was pleased at the warm, homey atmosphere as soon as we walked in. I ordered the oven baked steak, and I love that it came with so many sides. It really felt like a home cooked meal with green beans, fried potatoes, sauer kraut and fresh wheat bread. All the meals were very reasonably priced for the large quantity. It wasn't quite a 5 star meal because the food was good, not exceptional, but I would still happily return if I'm in the area.

Yelp
Had dinner here with the daughter's relatives. The food was quite good. The prices were extremely reasonable. The service was borderline terrible! Our waitress didn't seem to have the ability to follow through, she needed to be reminded multiple times for the same request. Not sure if I would return to eat here based upon the service.

Yelp
Oh Ronneburg, I was so ready to love you. (As German food is my favorite.) Alas, let's turn the lights on your food. Like literally. It was so dark in your restaurant I could barely see my plates. The schnitzel was disappointing, my spatzle was cold. The wine was terrible. I actually couldn't finish my glass. The bread "roll" was beyond generic. Manager in front of house had weird anxious energy. Waitress barely made eye contact. There was one very friendly younger man, best smile in the place. Overall, An outdated vibe which lacked freshness and appeal. Potato's and gravy, cheese sauce, coleslaw, cottage cheese were the most well done part of the meal.
