Rooftop Terrace Hippocampus

What a hidden gem!! The only rooftop restaurant in old town Kotor, Montenegro. A bit challenging to find but the views, the quiet and picturesque views make this a must when you are in Kotor. Oh, and the food is very fresh and tasty!

This is my second time here and I loved everything. The salmon Benedict is my favorite. Sorry, but I ate it all and can't show you. The photo shows French toast. If you're visiting off-season, be sure to come to the rooftop in the morning. There's quiet music and a nice atmosphere. We went in November and it was great. ꒰⁠⑅⁠ᵕ⁠༚⁠ᵕ⁠꒱⁠˖⁠♡

We had the most wonderful lunch at the rooftop terrace in the heart of Kotor. The view of the mountains and old town rooftops was breathtaking, but what truly made the experience special was our waiter, Nicolai from Serbia. He went above and beyond to make sure we were taken care of, guiding us through the menu and even finding the perfect wine to pair with our meal. His kindness, attentiveness, and hospitality made us feel right at home. Delicious food, stunning scenery, and exceptional service — if you’re in Montenegro, this spot is an absolute must, and ask for Nicolai! 🍷⛰️✨

This place not only offers a magical setting beneath the stars and surrounding mountains (which are quite stunning), it also impresses with its delicious food and attentive service. Our waiter Dino was very friendly and accommodating. We would definitely eat here again! Try the fried calamari, traditional shrimp and polenta dish, and beef steak.

Overall the experience was OK. We went for dinner around 8.30pm on a Tuesday evening. The first thing we noticed was that it was very dark, there wasn't much lighting. A table lamp was brought over eventually. We ordered drinks. They didn't have several of the wines I asked for, had to settle for the 4th option given. My partners beer was never brought, so we had to chase it up. The calamari portion was a decent size but could tell it wasn't fresh. Gnocchi and pork mains were nice, especially the pork dish was delicious. Our meal was unfortunately ruined by a huge amount of flying ants on our table, on our glasses, on our plates, one even got into a drink. At one point we had 10+ on the table. We didn't experience anything like this at any other restaurant in Kotor that we visited. A candle was brought over to replace the light, although didn't deter the ants more attracted them. The servers were nice but not overly friendly. The price of the food was reasonable, but the drinks prices were elevated comparable to all other places we visited in Kotor. We wouldn't come back again.

Doublecheck your check - they overcharge. Would not come back to this place, unfortunately. The wait staff was quite rude, seemed to be tired of serving guests and lacked knowledge of the menu. We ordered a quinoa salad with chicken and (!) a lemon vinaigrette dressing for brunch and it came with lots of iceberg lettuce, just a tea spoon of the actual quinoa and absolutely no dressing. We asked the waiter to bring us some lemons/olive oil/vinegar so we could dress the salad and the server told us it was supposed to come without a dressing (seems like the staff doesn’t know the menu). We did get olive oil and vinegar though so we dressed the salad ourselves. Lastly - we got scammed in our check. I ordered a mushroom risotto which was €16 on the menu and the final check charged €20 for this dish. After we asked for a menu back to doublecheck and addressed this, the waiter did give us €4 back, but it left a very unpleasant aftertaste. The only reason I’m leaving this place 2 stars instead of 1 is the view. You can’t get such views in many places in Kotor and it’s an okay place to grab some water and enjoy the view.

Stopped here for lunch after an eventful morning. We were tired and wanted a place to sit down and snack on something. The host was so nice and the food was really great. If I could give 10 stars for great service, I would. I think the places closer to the cruise ship terminal and along the plazas get more traffic but if you can walk a few extra blocks this place is worth it. We hope to come back to Kotor one day and will definitely be coming back here for a full meal.

Such a lovely restaurant and atmosphere, the staff were so friendly! We loved sitting on the roof and would like to come back for brunch before we leave Montenegro. We recommend booking as they were pretty much full on a Tuesday night early July! (We booked on the day and must’ve got lucky?) Swallows were flying above us while the sun set, the view is lovely. Definitely recommend as a romantic date spot but even as a peaceful dinner as I went with my family and us girls loved it. The tiramisu was DELICIOUS!
