The Stanze al Genio is a unique "house-museum" located in the heart of Palermo’s historic Kalsa district. It houses one of Europe’s largest private collections of antique Mediterranean tiles, all within the walls of a grand, inhabited 18th-century apartment.
The Heart of the Museum
The museum is the result of a lifelong passion of its founder, Pio Mellina, who began rescuing tiles from flea markets and demolition sites as a child.
• The Collection: Over 5,000 hand-painted majolica tiles cover the walls of eight rooms, ranging from the 15th to the early 20th century.
• Geographical Focus: The display highlights the distinct styles of Sicilian and Neapolitan craftsmanship, showcasing the evolution from Moorish geometric patterns to the elaborate floral and heraldic designs of the Baroque era.
• Beyond Tiles: The apartment also features original 18th-century frescoes and smaller, eclectic collections of vintage ink bottles, antique toys, and tin boxes.
The Experience
Unlike a traditional museum, this is a lived-in home. The collection is seamlessly integrated into the private residence, creating an intimate "Cabinet of Curiosities" atmosphere. Its name, "Stanze al Genio" (Rooms of the Genius), is a tribute to the Genius of Palermo, the city's ancient protector whose fountain is located nearby.
Key Highlights
• Palazzo Torre Pirajno: The 16th-century building itself is a masterpiece, featuring restored noble interiors and period furnishings.
• Cultural Preservation: The museum serves as a vital record of Southern Italy's decorative arts, preserving pieces that were often discarded during modern renovations.
• Guided Insight: Access is provided through personal guided tours, where the passion of the collectors helps bring the history of each "carpet" of tiles to life. Claudio was a fantastic enthusiastic guide to get us started. Enjoy!
