Sri Lanka Is Drawing Visitors After Years of Turmoil — Here's How to Visit

"A bar modeled on a 1920s speakeasy that spotlights arrack, Sri Lanka’s national spirit, alongside classic cocktails, offering a stylish, nostalgic drinking experience in the Old Town." - Prasad Ramamurthy Prasad Ramamurthy Prasad Ramamurthy is a former Condé Nast Traveller, India editor with over two decades of reporting experience. Homegrown bars around Colombo are reinventing arrack, a once-overlooked Sri Lankan spirit - SilverKris

"A contemporary speakeasy set within the historic UNESCO-listed fort, notable for being among the first venues to specialise in arrack-led mixology and for pairing cocktails with locally inspired bar food. Signature drinks are inventive and evocative — from an old-reserve arrack cocktail blended with tropical fruits, palm treacle and masala tea to a Ceylon Sour riff (arrack, lime, ginger, lemongrass), as well as rich combinations using cherry brandy, treacle and bitters. The bar also offers flights and aged arrack expressions (e.g., light-bodied vat expressions and barrel-aged old arrack), delivering a distinctly Sri Lankan take on classic formats." - Zinara Rathnayake

Absolutely delicious bar for highly unique cocktails. We kept coming back to try another one on their airy terrace (photos over couple of days!). Very friendly staff too. Loved the Ropewalk and Pepino cocktails particularly.

Beautifully restored colonial bar serving a wide range of high quality arrack and arrack cocktails. The service was very pleasant, there was live music (quite good) in the adjoining room. Overall a tremendous experience.

We dined there & it was an awesome experience. Food: jackfruit balls yum! Eggplant bites yum yum tasty! Crab curry was v delicious - bohomo hodia (very good!) Cocktails: v v Creative Gunpowder & Ropewalk! Musician: out of this world - being a 1 man band, it sounded like a 2-3piece band! Great upbeat jazz vibe! SVC: impeccable by Ryan whom we met in the afternoon & convinced us by his SVC & attention to come back in the evening for a great evening! Thanks heaps👍

Last week my friend Kate and I had a super evening with at the Ropewalk Bar at the Galle Fort Hotel. Ropewalk champions locally inspired cocktails and was named by Condé Nast Traveller as one of the top 20 bars in Sri Lanka - and boasts an extensive variety of Sri Lanka’s traditional tipple-Arack. We loved the signature arack sour cocktail named after the bar itself, followed by ‘gunpowder' arack cocktail as well as the more traditional arack cocktail with fresh passion fruit. We both did climb the ladder to reach the arack laden shelves without a hitch First time in ages that I enjoyed exploring the many flavours of Arrack-based cocktails. Great meeting the bar maestro, Nabeel, also Praveena, Abhishek & Denham. Looking forward to the Colombo incarnation happening soon!

Amazing cocktails! Unique flavor profiles while still being delicious. Great way to try drinks made with Sri Lankan arrack as the spirit. I was a little leery about trying the stout-based drink (tagged as ‘must try’) but it was fabulous. I ordered the mutton rolls, which were fresh, tasty, and huge. Minced mutton stuffed in dough coated with crispy panko flakes, then deep fried. The setting is gorgeous. Beautiful relaxed outdoor seating on the veranda. There is also indoor seating in the open air living room area, and then the air conditioned bar area. All in all, a lively scene.

Rope Walk is a fantastic spot with a lively ambiance and a well-curated menu. A must-try here are their cocktails — we had the Rope Walk and Gunpowder cocktails, and both were absolutely amazing. The flavors were unique and well-balanced, making for a great start to the evening. While it's slightly on the pricier side, the quality of the drinks, food, and atmosphere make it well worth it. The setting is stylish yet relaxed, perfect for a night out with friends or a casual date night. Highly recommended if you're looking to enjoy great cocktails in a great chilled out vibe!
