Mérida, Mexico, Is a Favorite Travel Destination Among Locals — How to Visit

"A beautiful boutique hotel and spa, Rosas & Xocolate lives in the bones of a French-style mansion overlooking the glamorous Paseo de Montejo. The on-site restaurant has tucked quite a few awards under its belt, and the 17 rooms are all individually designed, each with private outdoor Jacuzzis. "Rosas & Xocolate is a sexy boutique hotel right on the Paseo, surrounded by cafes, clubs, and shops, many occupying European-style mansions built during the henequen boom around the turn of the 20th century," said Gritzewsky." - Travel + Leisure Editors

"With a name like that, it’s no wonder this boutique hotel is a prime spot for romantic getaways in the Yucatan’s capital city. The two pink-hued colonial mansions are as charming as they are camera-friendly, bedecked in vibrant modern art and picturesque patios and outdoor corners that mix lush greenery and sleek furnishings. Life here feels like its perpetually viewed through rose-colored glasses, and it’s not just the walls: the spa offers an enticing menu of xocolatherapies; the tequila bar has over 250 varieties to sample; the oasis-like swimming pool is a palm-shaded spot for afternoon dips; and there’s even a chocolate shop on-site. Guests can dine on gourmet fusion fare in the restaurant, or head up to the rooftop lounge for cocktails with a side of live jazz. As for the guest rooms, they’re no less indulgent with their rose and cocoa palettes and patterned-tile floors; minimalist bathrooms have sumptuous open-air stone tubs, large walk-in rainfall showers, and handmade chocolate soaps."

If you can avoid this place do it, they advertise free parking not parking at all, you need to park on the street at your own risk. They advertise luxury boutique not true, we tried to go to the upper terrace the bar was in terrible conditions. Excellent staff good breakfast, good location.

We stayed at Rosas & Xocolate for 8 days and enjoyed every moment. The hotel is centrally located on the main paseo which made touring the local squares and other attractions easy to get to both day and night. Our room was comfortable - I slept soundly every night, the service was outstanding - the hotel was always clean and cozy, and the staff were friendly - always willing to help as needed. We took full advantage of all the services offered: spa, dining and their outdoor patios. We had dinner there late our first night after a long day of travel and were pleasantly surprised by the quality and great service. It was five stars above most other hotels' restaurants. Our room came with a complimentary breakfast. It too was delicious and had many choices, allowing us to try many local breakfast foods and beverages each morning.|I would like to give a particular 'shout out' to Crisiant, the sales manager/concierge. He was extremely helpful in advance of our stay helping us arrange a private birding tour, sending us a list of excellent local restaurants within walking distance and rearranging our reservation and transportation from the airport on the fly when our stay was delayed due to an airline issues.

This is a really charming hotel in a renovated mansion on a beautiful avenue. I stayed in the master suite - it was bright and airy, had massively high ceilings, was comfortable and spotless. (I did get an upgrade and for those of you with Bonvoy status, the staff did a great job of recognizing and valuing me throughout my weeklong stay. They were helpful, courteous and attentive) Crisiant, the Sales Manager, was particularly helpful. He contacted me promptly after my booking to assist with spa appointments and suggesting and arranging excursions. His assistance was valuable in planning my visit, as I had done little to no research before booking. The hotel's location is convenient for exploring the city. Paseo de Montejo is beautiful, offered a good base for walking to many city attractions and experiencing the local area. There are so many really good restaurants and shops in easy walking distance. It's a really great choice for a more than comfortable stay in Mérida.

My stay at Rosas & Xocolate Boutique Hotel and Spa in Mérida was a delightful experience that left a lasting impression, thanks to its unique charm and warm hospitality. Nestled in the heart of Mérida, this boutique hotel stands out with its breathtaking architecture and distinctive style. The fusion of colonial elegance with bold pink and chocolate-hued accents creates a visually striking ambiance that feels both luxurious and whimsical. Every corner of the property, from the lush courtyard to the meticulously designed rooms, showcases a thoughtful blend of modern sophistication and Yucatecan heritage. The attention to detail in the decor—think vibrant tiles, artisanal touches, and elegant furnishings—makes it a haven for anyone who appreciates aesthetic excellence. The staff at Rosas & Xocolate deserves high praise for their friendliness and professionalism. From the moment I arrived, they were welcoming, attentive, and eager to ensure my stay was comfortable. Whether it was offering recommendations for exploring Mérida’s vibrant cultural scene or accommodating special requests, their service added a personal touch that elevated the entire experience. The on-site amenities, including the spa and the restaurant, further enhanced my stay. The restaurant, in particular, served up delicious dishes that beautifully blended local flavors with a gourmet twist, making every meal a treat. However, there was one peculiar aspect of my stay that stood out for the wrong reasons: the hotel’s deposit policy. Upon checking in, they charge a deposit, which is fairly standard, but by the end of the stay, they retain a single cent from the refund. This practice felt odd and unnecessary, and it’s something I haven’t encountered at any other hotel I’ve stayed at worldwide. While it’s a minor amount and didn’t significantly detract from the experience, it left me puzzled and slightly annoyed, as it seemed like an unusual quirk for an otherwise polished establishment.Overall, Rosas & Xocolate is a fantastic choice for travelers seeking a boutique hotel with character, style, and heart in Mérida. The stunning architecture, exceptional staff, and unique vibe make it a standout. If you can overlook the odd deposit practice, this hotel is well worth a visit for a memorable stay in the Yucatán. I’d happily recommend it to anyone looking for a blend of luxury and local charm!

I got the Deluxe Exfoliation package with a relaxing massage at the Spa and it was one of the best massages I have ever had. Tonia was amazing. She asked questions about my problem areas and really paid special attention to them. Overall, it was an amazing experience because of Tonia!

I've always had a rather ambivalent regard for the Pet Shop Boys. Whilst their tunes are undeniably catchy their lyrics often humorous and clever they are equally often let down by a rather laboured rhyme or a clichéd phrase. However, I've often found myself quoting the line from the song Left to My Own Devices that states "...learn to ignore what the photographer saw" and that's what you need to do at Rosas and Xocolate. Rarely has a website been so misleading. See photos. There certainly aren't any Roses and no Chocolate either 😕 😄 But let's start with the positives. The hotel staff are accommodating and polite (special mention for the breakfast server Sophie) with a comprehensive breakfast menu of decent quality and the location is very good. That's it. Now the reasons I wouldn't return. In general the hotel is unloved and poorly maintained. On arrival, the lobby had a large broken glass candle holder, the corridor had dirty glasses on the floor that remained untouched for over 24 hours and our room (the Master Suite) was tired and inadequately maintained. On arrival, the power shorted, the toilet leaked (this was fixed) the coffee maker didn't work (this too was fixed - but by turning off the refrigerator) and the bed linen faded and poor quality. The breakfast courtyard was dirty and unswept and the windows generally needed a good clean. The overall feel was one of decline and neglect which is unforgiveable in any establishment but given the prices being charged it almost amounts to theft. Read my other reviews; you'll see I'm not given to unnecessary criticism nor over reaction to a single incident of  bad service. There's another lyric from the Pet Shop Boys song Shopping that goes "...our gain is your loss, that's the price you pay". This might just sum up the Rosas and Xocolate experience. P.S. I'm honestly not a big Pet Shop Boys fan.

visited as a couple to their Christmas Eve dinner (1,990 mxn/pp) - disaster but parking was easy. Only dined here, cannot speak to the lodging. no tables on the patio got water until at least 20 minutes after sitting down, left hungry, turkey was so dry you're better off eating Costco chicken, offered a wine list half way through the meal but no one ever came by to take the order. I think them not speaking English made interacting with us very intimidating, so nobody checked up on us and seemed like straight up avoided us. We had informed them via text and twice in person that one of us had severe walnut allergies (to which their front of house manager acknowledged to have removed) but it still came on the plate... Worst of it is the morning after food poisoning - even though I was completely fine eating at the wet market and seafood in Sisal (days prior). Absolutely unacceptable for the price, flavor, and food safety - for food just go to LaChaya Maya.

Staff is very accommodating and attentive. Hotel was authentic to Merida. One did not feel you could be in anywhere in the world in a generic hotel room. The breakfasts in the restaurant were outstanding as were other meals. Tours arranged were informative and worthwhile.
