On the Grid : ROSEMONT Market & BAKERY

"This small neighborhood market is a perfect lunch spot, especially on a warm day when the door is open and you get the feel of shopping in a outdoor market and eating at picnic tables. Between freshly baked bread and pastries to local fruits and veggies to prepared lunches, Rosemont is a great place to go for fresh, local food." - Mainelyseo

Our whole experience would have been different if the clerk wasn’t so rude. Very unfriendly employee. The carrots, apples, bread, cheese and wine were good. However, I cannot recommend this market due to the rude staff.

Google
The store was great! The produce and selection of products was great! The interaction with employee was not great! I don’t know why my daughter and I were treated the way we were (we are from out of town and purchased over a $150 worth of groceries) but the cashier was rude and not helpful at all. If it was something we did we apologize but still feel that customer service should be priority.

Google
This place had lots of great cold pick up items, baked goods, fruits and all the basics for a small neighborhood market. We got a loaf of the Brioche bread and we loved it. The staff member was so nice and kind. A nice place to run in and grab the necessities!

My experience at Rosemont was AMAZING!!!! Definitely recommend this place to everyone. The two employees Finn and Dante were very helpful in my selections and were very kind and considerate. I will be coming back soon!!!!

OMG Rachel was PHENOMENAL! I decided last minute that it would be a nice little treat to get some cookies for my first book club meeting that I hosted last night. The problem though: It was already 4pm so I was trying to find a bakery that was still open late in the day. I went on a few websites to find a good local bakery and stumbled across Rosemont. I had been there in the past a couple of times and really liked their products so I decided to give it a try again for the cookies. I called and not only did they have them but Rachel provided one of the most epic experiences I have had in a while. She was so excited for what I was doing for the book club and even make recommendations on all of the different types of cookies and was able to get it ready for me for curbside pickup in just a matter of minutes. Problem solved! Thank you, Rachel and Rosemont Market and Bakery!

Google
Small but lovely location of a local market chain sourcing regional produce, in house bakery items, premade meals, and a selection of natural and organic shelf stable stuff. Beer and wine. Friendly and helpful staff. Very glad they're in the neighborhood.

Google
Love the staff, but the company is GROSS. The local label is used a little aggressively... unless you'd call Morocco or Chile local. Customers, do a little product and price comparison at the other grocery stores in town, then decide if you want to continue to support this place.

Google
What a great little shop, and it really adds to the charm of the Munjoy Hill community. I visited three times while in town. The staff were always exceedingly friendly, the quick bites were very good, and the coffee was excellent.

Yelp
I have been here probably 100 times; maybe more. The Staff are all very friendly. The sandwiches are typically very delicious. Sometimes you get a dud, but for the most part bang up job. The sushi is excellent. I also enjoy most of their pre-made foods like the pasta salads, and empanadas. While we're at it, they have an excellent selection of beers and wines. Go-to spot, easy. Yeaaaahhhhh.. big tyme, big tyme.

Yelp
Visited as a tourist to grab some essentials for the Airbnb we were staying at. Walkable and super cute just everything was on the pricier end since it seemed geared towards tourists.

Yelp
My boyfriend and I were planning to send a package filled with Maine goodies to our friend in Florida, so we stopped by Rosemont Market & Bakery to see what we could find. Jackpot! We found a bunch of local products, from honey and hot sauces to wines. We were welcomed and helped by their friendly and attentive staff. Once we described to them what type of wine our friend liked, they gave us great recommendations. The store itself had a bit of everything. A small wine section was nicely stocked, and so was their produce section. Freshly baked bread, sandwiches and other hot foods, as well as dairy and cheese, were available. It's the cutest market, to be honest, but not one I'd frequent often. I'd come back to get a specific ingredient or product, but not to shop much due to their prices being so high. Even simple things like green onions are 2x or 3x more than at the regular grocery store. All in all, adorable neighborhood bakery with some very high prices.

Yelp
Excellent produce. If you can't make it to the farmers market I highly recommend Rosemont. Get really fresh vegetables here that you can taste the difference. Their prepared foods are also great. I'd skip the pizza but try the breakfast burrito. Their breads are wonderful and fresh but I would advise the owners to consider a way to keep flies out better. There's nothing less appetizing than seeing flies on your food. Overall super cute and convenient and packed with local food for a quick bite.

Yelp
Always always always take the opportunity to purchase Miyake sushi at Rosemont. The pretzel rolls are to die for, they have a great beer selection AND local ice cream selection. I visit this location frequently for the Parlor ice cream, as Rosemont is one of few local businesses to carry it.

Yelp
We were staying nearby and ended up swinging by here twice to grab a breakfast sandwich, some bread, cheese, and salami from this place... everything was delicious! They also had other food like pizza, pre-made meals, wine, and other miscellaneous goodies. The guy behind the meat counter was super friendly and helped us figure out what kind of meat to purchase, so two thumbs up for that. If I lived near here, I would go way too often!

Yelp
I love Rosemont, always clean, always happy people, convince, good sandwiches and soups. Great wine. I'm glad to live close to this one and it makes me feel good that this business is a part of the Portland community.

Yelp
I find myself conflicted about Rosemont Market. What I like about it is the convenience of having a little market close by when I inevitably forget something at the grocery store. I also love that they have homemade chicken/beef/seafood stock that you can purchase as well as other organic, premium items. They have Standard Bakery items, nice wines, cheeses, etc. Everything is top-notch. The household basics are there and it is the saving grace for my forgetfulness. The cost, of course, is the issue. I bought an apple, and pear and a banana one day and the total came to $8. So no, this is not the place to go if you forget the toilet paper... The place is also swarming with Hungry, Hungry, Hipsters. The place is so cliche it is almost a spoof of itself. Full of young, hip, parents in Patagonia jackets, Subaru Outbacks, carrying their babies in Boba wraps that wear cloth diapers, whilst they buy kale for their morning smoothies. Or musicians in suspenders toting ukuleles on their backs as they peddle to the market on their fixie bikes... I'm only half-kidding. That is actually a pro. Everyone who frequents the place is super-nice. ;-)

Yelp
This is probably the place I heard the most about upon moving to Portland. Most people raved about the cheese selection, others about the fresh-baked breads and the free Friday evening wine tastings. The first time I quickly purveyed the place I failed to see what the hype was all about. The second time however, I was heading home after a run and thought I'd give it another try and I saw these breakfast sandwiches and my stomach got the better of me. I've never been a huge breakfast sandwich person, but oh, man. Lemme break it down: picture homemade HUGE fluffy english muffin with lots of cornmeal dusting, then picture a beautifully cooked egg that is solid enough to stay put yet cooked just past the point of being runny, i.e., the perfect breakfast sandwich egg. (I have no interested in the omelettey-consistency of many breakfast sandwich eggs). Then add lots and lots of provolone cheese that is melty-gooey-goodness. Then add some roasted red peppers, some fresh basil, and seasoning. Oh yeah and tubs of homemade pickled jalapeno sauce free o'charge. So filling and so yum. Ugghh it was dangerously good for being something I can get just a few blocks of way. It was so good it made me spend way too much time reading on serious eats how to make such a delicious breakfast sandwich so I won't be tempted to buy this regularly. They have a small but interesting array of wines, cheeses and produce. I haven't compared prices yet, but it seems as though it's like have a smaller selection of whole foods produce/cheese at similar prices, just more conveniently located if you happen to live near it. I was impressed with the array of fresh baked breads and goodies and plan to come back to try those out.

Yelp
Made 2 trips to this gem of a market & bakery. Tonight was a quick bit. Did not disappoint us. The beef burrito was soo tasty. Just a quick walk from our Airbnb just perfect.

Yelp
A great convenience for the neighborhood, but a bit of a gouge on prices. $5 for a small pound of repackaged/packaged-bulk rice, $11.00-plus for at least one type of ground beef. I understand prices on more organic items being somewhat premium, but little Rosemont Market makes Whole Foods look like Walmart. The staff is generally friendly however and if you're willing to pay the price and live near by, it will save you a trek up to Whole Foods or Hanneford. Then again, I'm guessing that's what Rosemont is counting on to keep those prices high. If they'd revisit some of their pricing structures, I'd be a cheerleading fan. Until then, I'm using it sparingly for when I'm in a pinch and need emergency eggs or greens.

Yelp
Loved this place and wish we had found it earlier in our trip. Great pastries and fresh fruit. I bought a bunch of spices and took them home in my suitcase they were so cheap!!

Yelp
I live around the corner from the Rosemont. What can I say, this place belongs in the neighborhood. You'll find a healthy stock of wine, a plethora of hearty meal options and friendly service. All and all, the Rosemont is a nice eclectic compilation of organic fixings brewed with an easy going atmosphere. It's not a house it's a home.

Yelp
I live on Munjoy Hill - too bad with regard to Rosemont, because i will only go to this one if i am truly desperate. I love the Brighton one and the Yarmouth one. Why? First, because you never know if the music will be pleasant or overly loud and brainscraping. Second - well its like the first. It seems about 50% of their staff are surly sourpusses and not at all friendly. The other 50% are great, but you never KNOW what you're going to get in terms of noise, personnel, and atmosphere if you go there. No music would be an improvement. I like to know what I'll get (and that it will be nice) when patronizing a local business.

Yelp
Love the location. Love the selection. Love the baked goods. Love the beer/wine selection. Love the deli. Love the veggies. Love it. And half the staff are super friendly while the other half shambles and grumbles around. I almost think they're in mourning. If so, please get counseling. If not a smile goes a long way for your customers. Not asking for Disney cheer but a hello and a smile is all.

Yelp
Small, but sweet market with groceries, produce, prepared foods, deli, baked goods.

Kathleen W.

Yelp
While the butcher case is fully and sumptuously stocked and there are prepared entrees with beef, chicken, sausages, ham and pork available daily, Rosemont seems to have little interest in giving its vegetarian or vegan customers choices beyond a soup or sandwich offering - OK for lunch (although repetitive), but how about something more substantial? There is an occasional lentil-mushroom loaf available, but the vegan shepherd's pie that was available occasionally last year has disappeared. It would be helpful if Rosemont would decide to be a real neighborhood grocery and serve all its customers.

Yelp
A little of everything, with every thing being fresh and well selected. The price is what you'd expect for a curated food/supply selection. A great local "Bodega" (I use that term very loosely here since it's so swank)

Yelp
Great neighborhood spot! I love the wide variety of dips and spreads. A great place to stock up for a casual yet gourmet picnic or dinner.

Yelp
i normally love their veggie sandwiches. picked one up today for the beach, and when i decided to eat i found weird looking slimy green things?? and some sort of weird white cheese (ricotta?) and walnuts. with 2 thin slices of cucumber. i was very hungry, at the beach, stranded with no food!! i picked out the green slimy things and tried to eat it and ended up with 2 cucumber slices and the chips i brought. am presently trying to put on some weight, and this did not cut it at all. i called when i got home and was informed that the 7$ sandwiches i gave to the seagulls was an apple veggie sandwich. still feel nauseated from it. and not one offer of a refund for this gross meal, and i have been buying there since they opened. use caution when getting a veggie!! guess i will continue on, because this past saturday i bought one from the commercial st store and it had really weird (once again) huge seeds in it. maybe i am missing something here, but plan on never buying another sandwich from them again! do want to say that management did call me back and say they where sorry, and offered a refund. wish they would have said that the first time i called. really not trying to make a stink, but i also work in the hospitality business, and do think this complaint could have been handled better, but at least they tried!! i will for sure bump them up to 2 stars.

Yelp
I could wander this tiny gourmet market heaven everyday. This is the type of market that makes you truly believe in small business groceries again and I'm proud to say it's 5 mins walk from my house. I can count on them at least keeping basic needs (good eggs, milk, various produce, wine, cheese, local cured meats) met and if I need something quick and nice and of good quality for those impromptu guests they have that too. Also they provide excellent impulse buys, like cookies and house made pizza. We have literally taken house guests to this market while touring the neighborhood to show off how lucky we are to such a place near by. I am proud to support this local business as often as I can!

Yelp
I come here once a week after I pickup from my CSA nearby and get the finishing touches for what I'm making for dinner. I love the selection of farm fresh veggies and the ready to go meals are always good. With this summer's heat- I especially love the watermelon gazpacho. I also love that they carry the Urban Farm Fermentory's Kombucha too!

Yelp
I love this place so much! I am addicted to the sushi they have (I think its from Miyake). Spicy tuna roll for $6.50, 2-3 times a week. Nom nom. Friendly staff, very knowledgeable about their wine. Most of the prices are going to be a bit higher than somewhere like trader joes, but generally more gourmet selections so it is understandable. It is a consistently great experience-every time I walk out the door I am reminded of why I love Munjoy Hill.

Yelp
Great baked goods, nice selection of beer and fresh produce. It's a win.

Yelp
I needed to add my 2cents here because this little spot does not get its due. I lived on the hill for over a year and I couldn't have survived without this little shop. It's sad to say that I've never made it over to the big location; I love this one too much! Even now (I live almost an hour away) whenever I am in town or my spouse works (in Portland), we stop by weekly for at least some bread. Bread - yes!! So good, I will never top the Scala but all the breads are gorgeous and made with Skowhegan flour. Right now you can get their yummy Hot Cross Buns (only for a limited time in season!) and in Summer I can't recommend the Green Gazpacho enough. Prices are subject to availability in there - some stuff is very nicely priced (bread, bulk goods, local organic eggs just cost that much but the ones I always got were the comparable $4.99, local honey, herbs), the nitrate free deli is wonderful, the cheese selection is small but divine and the wine/beer selection is hand picked (much of it, responsible and from small growers - I got a lesson one day, just ask). I love the hip workers in there - most of them supersweet and they do a good job at organizing such a teeny space. You can hop in for a handmade lunch or get a good amount of groceries in here. I'm a big fan.

Yelp
So great to have a little market like this in the neighborhood where you can pick up some produce, cheese, nice deli items, and even grab a six pack of beer! Everyone who works there seems to be really friendly. Here's my critique: I've tried the baked goods three times now, and I've never had anything that really tasted freshly baked. It seems like a lot of the offerings are at least a day old - perhaps even more? In short, the bakery gets a low rating, at least if these three experience of mine (and there won't be anymore) are any guide. Also, it would be great if they carried a couple more really high quality beers, though that is less a complaint than a suggestion.

Yelp
The perfect little neighborhood market. If I move back to Portland some day, I would love to live close to this place. It has lots of stuff: local veggies, fresh baked breads, a little deli, steal cuts oats in the morning, etc. etc. Love it.

Frank H.

Yelp
i love this place to death, and though there aren't any other reviews on here yet, i think that goes for pretty much the entire neighborhood. everything the rosemonts do, they do well. from deli to produce to prepared foods, they're really without rival in the portland area for my money. and their bakery can stand side by side with the best portland has to offer. john naylor, the guy who owns the rosemonts and used to manage the portland green grocer, has done an admirable job giving these small markets an exceptionally wide appeal. yeah, they've started getting a bit of a media image for their fashionable ideals and their attractiveness to high-minded gourmands, but the truth is that they're just neighborhood markets, done right. by which i mean, this place isn't for foodies only. it's for everyone. whether you just want to come in and grab a sandwich and some suds or whip up something worthy of larousse gastronomique and pair it with a great bottle of wine. although i do imagine it's probable that if you don't consider yourself a "foodie" -- and it's a goddamn annoying word, i agree -- you might just find yourself, by no fault of your own, becoming more and more excited about the food world in the course of shopping here regularly. just keep in mind that, true of any neighborhood market, you might not always have your "ideal shopping experience" here, you know, where with the assistance of peppy, eager-to-help staff you find exactly what you were looking for and more. but once you know what this place is kinda about, you won't trade it for anything.

Evan L.

Yelp
Another fine entry into the Rosemont Market line, very similar to the flagship store on Brighton Ave but a little bit smaller. Local foods, fresh breads, and hard-to-find items like unpasteurized dairy products. You might not be able to do 100% of your shopping here due to both selection and price but it's definitely worth a try.

Lina B.

Yelp
Yum! Nice cheese collection and great bread/ wine selection. Limited but nice selection of most things you'd need and many local products represented.
