"Why did this hotel catch your attention? What's the vibe? It's nearly impossible to take your eyes off Wakatipu, the arresting lake that Queenstown's entire travel industry is built around. When arriving at Matakauri's regal grounds, just outside the town center, that lake view is firmly in place (and just wait till you see it through the resort's floor-to-ceiling windows from bed). But then attention shifts to the tasteful estate, all white woods and manicured grounds. It feels subtle instead of showy. They know the real star is the natural surrounding and have done everything to be worthy of the company rather than steal the spotlight. Something about the world's most beautiful nature paired with the sophistication of the resort makes you want to forego the urge for flip flops or bare feet you find elsewhere in New Zealand and actually dress for dinner. Though, this being New Zealand, the flip flops may still go down just fine. What's the backstory? Matakauri is owned by Robertson Lodges, from American billionaire Julian Robertson whose collection includes the equally wonderful Kauri Cliffs and Cape Kidnappers in the North Island. Tell us all about the accommodations. Any tips on what to book? Full disclosure: I was in the Owners Cottage which is every bit as opulent as you would expect. Spaced out across several rooms with a fully functional kitchen and the living rooms of your mountain lodge dreams, it is more like your own apartment than a hotel room. There are merino wool throws draped over leather chairs facing out to The Remarkables (yup, that's the name of the mountain range across the lake, no need to explain what it's named for...) and plush couches to sink into with a bottle of local Otago Pinot Noir. Everything is perfect—and manages to be both comfy and swanky. It's nice enough to be über cautious about spilling your red wine, but cozy enough to feel like, if you did, it would not be the end of the world. Is there a charge for Wi-Fi? Free and good. Drinking and dining—what are we looking at? There is a wonderful on-site restaurant, showcasing the best version of New Zealand's produce: think Akaroa salmon and tender lamb, with some of the country's best wine. It is a tad formal so if you're not feeling like a three-course meal each night, you are better off eating in the town. Just be sure to allow for at least one dinner at Matakauri, as the quality is really special and worth the price. And the service? Very smooth. The Robertson Lodges follow a traditional, silver service approach, which is never a bad thing—although it can sometimes feel at odds with New Zealand's typically laid back culture. That does not mean to say it feels jarring here—it certainly doesn't—but it will feel noticeably different from the places you would have stayed at elsewhere in the country before arrival. Anything you would want to do in the greater environs can be organized through the concierge, including private wine tasting in the Otago Winelands and helicopter rides to the peaks across the lake. What type of travelers will you find here? You're in the company of wealthy, but adventurous travelers: Russians who want to soak in the mountaintop hot springs, Americans excited to explore Franz Josef Glacier. It is the type of company that may feel formal in other circumstances but New Zealand has a way of making everyone feel as though they have loosened their proverbial tie just enough to get relaxed and friendly. Is there anything you'd change? It could benefit from extra amenities but the lake is so spectacular there may not be a need to distract from it. Bottom line: Worth it? Why? The premier lodge in the southern hemisphere's adventure capital makes sure you do it right." - Erin Florio

Note: This review is not on the Rosewood Matakauri accomodation, it is review on the restaurant only. Firstly, thank you Rosewood for opening up the lodge restaurant to the locals (instead of traditionally only available to in-house guests)! We were there for 3 course lunch tasting menu for 2 adults and our child had a seperate kids menu. Dining Environment: Superb view and well appointed interior. Intimate dining room but somehow lacking vibes (might just be the date we were there which was off peak season). Drinks: Good wine list with lots of local options. I had the Kauri Bees Knees cocktail including gin, homegrown honey, basil etc. which is essentially a gimlet - subtle and refreshing. Food: Chef accommodated one of us not being able to have the fish starter so swapped for a vegetarian option which was very nice. My kingfish crudo starter was well presented but not quite to my liking - it might just be because I try crudos wherever I go and can be fussy about it. The venison main was very good with complimentary flavours and the meat wasn’t gamy (which venison can be sometimes); the steak option had bone marrow on top which overpowered the flavours. The dessert was the highlight - it has depth in the flavours with well balanced sweetness. Overall: Highly recommended dinning experience in a beautiful setting.

Exceptional! Of all the five star luxury hotels we have been blessed to stay in, the Matakauri is right up there with our absolute all time favorites. When we walked into the hotel lobby we were mesmerized by the beautiful decor and gorgeous artwork. The captivating views from almost everywhere we looked took our breath away. The staff at the Matakauri was outstanding and went above and beyond to accommodate all of our needs. The food was top notch and exquisitely delicious. The chef made us gluten-free dishes that were absolutely mouthwatering! Our room was luxury at its best- spacious, beautifully decorated, and the attention to detail was exceptional. The views were otherworldly and we felt lifted into a magical space of tranquility and inner peace. We will always hold dear to our hearts the extraordinary experience we had at the Rosewood Matakauri. Highly recommended and a slice of Heaven we will most definitely will never forget.

We dined at Matakauri Lodge on Saturday to celebrate our 10 year wedding anniversary. I honestly cannot recommend this experience enough. We treated ourselves to the 5 course set menu and it was absolutely stunning. Each dish surpassed our expectations, everything was melt in your mouth delicious and seasoned to perfection. To top it off the view from the dining room was amazing and the service was on point! Thanks to the team, for helping us celebrate this occasion in style.

Smaller than the other Rosewood lodges but perfectly positioned to showcase the natural beauty of Lake Wakatipu. Davide provided an excellent welcome and made arrangements. Much appreciated. Dining here is wonderful. We booked a helicopter adventure with Cody as our pilot - saw mountain peaks, distant shores, and landed on Glacier Saddle. The helicopter also took us to Milford Sound, which was breathtaking.
||||The hotel arranged a trip on a classic steam ship as well. Though more compact than its sister properties, Matakauri delivered experiences that were just as memorable.

Now you could say the Post Ranch Inn is the like Matakauri of the northern hemisphere or wise versa. What they have in common is a location close to heaven, exceptional service and hospitality as great food. We also love our family villa which had everything we dreamed of (and our little ones are demanding 😉).

My wife and I were so excited for our stay at the Rosewood Matakauri and ultimately were pretty underwhelmed. This is the review I wish I had read prior to booking it. If you are considering booking the Lake View Deluxe Room, consider either upgrading or looking at a different property altogether. Our room was quite disappointing for the price and what we've come to expect from the Rosewood brand. Our room was up a narrow staircase right off the lobby - if felt like an afterthought shoehorned into an attic. You could hear everything in the lobby, and as the (excellent) front desk manager joked, "if you need anything, just pop your head out and shout down to the front desk!" The room itself felt shabby and outdated, be it the bizarre illuminated exit sign, the worn carpet, or the picture frame hardware hastily nailed into the wall to hang the "do not disturb" sign. Again, just not up to caliber for a Rosewood. The service in the restaurant, with some exceptions (the bar manager was wonderful), also underwhelmed. Too many times requests were forgotten, we had to ask for things multiple times, etc. I hate to write a negative review, but again, it's the review I wish I had read before booking it. While far from a terrible experience, in the echelon of Rosewoods, Amans, Four Seasons, etc., it was not at the standard it should be. Afterwards we both wished we had spent that considerable sum of money elsewhere.

This review is of the restaurant, not as a hotel guest. We were warmly welcomed and offered to sit in the lounge for a pre-dinner cocktail. After waiting 5 minutes we were asked twice about ordering drinks but had not been given a menu. We then got our menu and ordered 2 Negroni’s—well made and served in nice glassware. An attentive and friendly gentleman introduced himself and showed us to our seat in a dining room—separate to all other guests. Our table had a lovely view over the lake. However, sitting alone in this room all we could hear was noise from dishes being cleaned in the kitchen. The air conditioning appeared to be set for a room of 20 people not 2 as it was very cold. The dead flies in the windowsill was also unappealing as was the table of uncleared plates next to us. The food was excellent, particularly the oysters and steak. The Peregrine sparkling was also the wine highlight of the holiday so they need to keep that on the menu. The table service was excellent, particularly the young Australian lady who was friendly, polite and attentive. Overall, it appeared they preference hotel guests over walk-ins. Which is not the same experience when I dined at the Cape Kidnappers restaurant in 2022. For the price point, I’d expect a bit better.

This review was a long time coming! I had the privilege to spend four nights at the Matakauri Lodge in May. Upon arrival, I was upgraded to a ginormous suite facing Lake Watatipu. Overall, I couldn’t have asked for a more perfect stay. The room was beyond comfortable. It was so relaxing that I easily would’ve been content hanging out by the window or on the patio all day. ||Being about 10 minutes outside of town, I liked that the property was full board and included mini bar items. I wish all properties would just tack on a fee and include items to the room rate. Food in the dining room was excellent. You could order ala carte or opt for the tasting menu, which allows you to sample a little bit of most of the menu. I definitely have to praise the F&B team in taking the care to ensure my items were gluten free. The only thing that can be improved is their god-awful coffee, which tasted like jet fuel. Davide, the GM, discussed this. Among all my stays at various properties around the world, very few know how to really do coffee, which is too bad since som much effort is put into wine and alcohol programs. ||Before you arrive, be sure to contact the concierge and they can arrange all sorts of excursions and transfers for you. There are hiking trails right outside the door of the property, so the active visitor will always have plenty to do. ||Thank you, Davide and team, for making my stay at the Matakauri Lodge a memorable one.
