"Every day through Dec. 21 at 5 p.m., just as the sun goes down behind Lisbon’s hills, I hear the Christmas parade and watch Santa emerge under twinkling lights, turning the square into a buzzy holiday spectacular. It’s always a party with the free electric train circling the market, musical performances, and Christmas characters, plus cozy drinks like hot chocolate, mulled wine, and a special Ginjinha sangria featuring Portugal’s beloved sour-cherry liqueur with its sweet, cinnamon-forward flavor. This year the market has doubled to 75 wooden houses and remains free to access, and even a mid-day visit is beautiful by the 1899 fountains that anchor the square." - Stacey Leasca
