"Robert H. Goddard and Rockets Let's put aside the sci-fi Roswell UFO hysteria for this worthy museum (with free admission) including an excellent collection of Southwestern artists ( John Marin, Walter Mruk, Georgia O'Keeffe) and modernist works from Santa Fe and Taos art colonies. Spend time studying Robert H. Goddard (the "father of modern rocket propulsion") extensive collection consisting of a private building room, journals and supplies. The gift shop has an ample selection of art books, American Indian Arts and a children's corner."

If you are going to this museum for primarily extraterrestrial related exhibits than you should really save your time and money. Now that is not to say that this museum was a waste of time. The museum was very clean and had excellent exhibits. There were a number of exhibits regarding Native Americans, weapons and the first rockets ever launched by the United States. There is also a very exciting planetary laser show in the auditorium at the museums entrance. The show is held several times a day at set times that you will be informed of at the front desk. There is also a fair amount of interesting art that is on display there. Roswell sure had a lot of extraterrestrial paraphernalia in the town but things like this museum teach you little more about the town. I believe you and your family will have a fun time navigating the exhibits.

Wow. The honk if you don't exist exhibit really spoke to me . The lay out of the bldg is ..... convoluted and the map is not to scale but it's a beautiful place and I honestly prefer to be a little lost in a museum. The pricing is fair and the staff was friendly. There's many different exhibits on display right now, even though two of them are closed currently to be re installed . Writing this before I get to see the planetarium movie , but I'm excited for that as well.

This was not the UFO museum, but it was SO much better. So happy we stayed to look around because it was such a well-built museum. Roswell has such a rich and beautiful history and it was so nice to see it preserved here. Please visit this museum if you're in town!

I honestly had no clue what to expect. I just drove to the closest place of interest that my hotel pointed me to. I had fun, it was a bit like a maze and the lady in the gift shop was wonderful to talk to and a wealth of neat facts about the different resident artist. I enjoy history and they had 2 interesting history areas, one on the American west and the other on Robert Goddard. Some of the themed installation were truly imaginative. Would love to come back for the next theme.

Google
Stunning museum, way more stuff on show then I ever thought. Probably one of the best small town museums I've ever been to, totally worth the entry fee and an hour to walk around in the air conditioning. Huge exhibits to art, science and history. Rocketry room donated by the Goddard's was a fascinating look at the early days of rocket science in America. All sorts of interesting details of the tools and equipment used. Huge number of historical artifacts as well, from ancient New Mexico history, to early guns and weapons used in a range of conflicts, even a couple of suites of armor! Staff was helpful and kind, entire place was clean and cool.

Location: Good, Parking: Decent, Price worth the ticket : Yes, Military Discount: Yes, Gift Shop: Yes, Overall: This was the second visit and the first in 15 years. Much has changed, and for the better. Even though it is still a bit small, it does have some exhibits to keep your attention. I know I will be back just to see what new changes are made to update what the federal government will finally admit to the people...we are not alone....4 Stars...

We spent about an hour and a half here. I wouldn't expect spending anymore time than that. Had some interesting displays and the kids thought about half of them were interesting. Had American west historical stuff along with rocketry history with Robert Goddard and some native American cultural stuff. Worth checking out if you have an hour or so to spend.

Google
Absolutely devastated to hear about the damage from the flood. I encourage those who can do so to reach out and offer support! If there is anyway to help the museum other than monetarily please let me know!

Yelp
Wonderful art museum, and we were just at Chicagos Art Institute last month & the works definitely held our interest just as well. They even had like a meditating room with a heartbeat soundtrack and a place to sit down and just relax. Bonus, there's a planetarium with an interesting sky show. Prices have risen since previous posts--for 2 seniors is was 10 bucks each for the museum & sky show. Well worth it.

Yelp
First-rate museum with contemporary art by local people of all stripes. It also Includes a planetarium and exhibit of Robert Goddard's rocketry workshop and some rocketry artifacts.

Yelp
I was pleasantly surprised by this little museum. It was full of information regarding the Roswell Incident and other claims of close encounters. Tickets were a fair price. I think we paid $13-14 for 2 adults and one child. They had nice t-shirts and souvenirs too.

Yelp
Great museum! Very large. I like that there's a variety of galleries not just contemporary art. There's a really great history hall with Native and historic Euro- American items.

Yelp
Loved the Robert Goddard exhibits. And the art work was quite interesting. Well worth your time to visit.

Yelp
We were pleasantly surprised by the excellent and varied artwork that was displayed as well as some historical exhibits that gave some history of the area. It is well worth the visit and much more engaging than all the UFO hype in Roswell. Also the "A Lasting Legacy: 85 Years of the Roswell Museum" exhibit is very interesting with the events of the year it was founded,1937, painted up at the top of the walls, encircling the room.

Yelp
Very interesting museum, I would recommend stopping by and checking it out at least once in their lives especially if you're driving through.

Yelp
When I think of Roswell, 'Great art museum/gallery" is NOT the first thing that comes to mind. But holy crap, this place BLEW ME AWAY. We went here specifically to try to go the planetarium that was free that day, but they were full and the line was long. That just meant we got more time than originally planned to explore the art here. It is not specifically a Contemporary Art museum, but it most of the pieces on display when I was there were very modern, which I love. Make this your first stop in Roswell and you will not be disappointed (well, first after the visitors center next door)

Yelp
Very surprising to find a museum of this caliber in a small Western town better known for UFOs and aliens. We stopped on a spur of the moment while passing through Roswell. Loads of free parking by the museum and no admission charge. We took about an hour to wander through and see it all. In addition to paintings, they have wonderfully done glass cases stuffed with artifacts from the past all very well identified and marked. They also had a nice recreation of an old rocket laboratory and tooling.

Yelp
Great art museum for such a small town. Admission is free and donations are welcomed. We thoroughly enjoyed it!

Yelp
We visited Roswell just to say we'd been there. The UFO Museum turned out not to be worth a stop, but the Roswell Museum & Art Center is a top-notch small regional museum. It has interesting exhibits of New Mexico and Southwestern art, along with a surprising amount of artifacts from Robert Goddard's life and pioneering work in rocketry. It was unexpected to find a museum of this quality in a small town. I especially enjoyed the paintings by Billy Schenck and the black and white architectural photographs of New Mexico subjects by Robert Christensen. There are several galleries of permanent exhibits, along with a number of rotating exhibits. Admission is by donation. Parking is plentiful in a lot next to the museum, and it's free.

Yelp
Free spot to check out. Came here for UFO festival, definite place to check out. Didn't have the chance to check out the planetarium as it was $5
google avatar

Stellanne K.

Yelp
I tried to go to this place three times over the last week it is never open they don't answer their phone and there is no way to find out what's going on this is ridiculous
google avatar

Beverly M.

Yelp
Great museum featuring contemporary artists as well as western artifacts. Dr Robert Goddard's work is featured and they also have a planetarium. A must see and is better than the UFO museum!
google avatar

Channon D.

Yelp
This museum is free and the art is amazingly nice. I really liked the sculptures and the Founders Gallery. The Patricia Gaylord Anderson Gallery was very nice as well. Consider bringing a few dollars to donate.
google avatar

April S.

Yelp
For a small donation you can experience a wonderful array of beautiful art. Not to mention that they have an entire section devoted to Native American history. My favorite part was the amazing Robert Goodard collection. You can see his private building room and supplies. Worth the time!!!

Yelp
Unusual mix of stuff Rockets Western artifacts And art But it's free and air-conditioned. Gift shop has something for everyone

Yelp
Good Golly Miss Molly! How can something so terrific be free? ? ? Well, I made a small donation! Hope it stays free! The people of Roswell are lucky to have a first class museum like this in the middle of alien insanity. Yelp 365 Challenge: 39/365

Yelp
Very good city musem. Its free theres a star. They have works of art. Rockets, guns knifes bows and arrows takes about an hour. Make sure u stop its adjacent from the info center building.

Nancy H.

Yelp
An unexpected & fine regional museum. The wonderful blend of archaeological treasures, early atomic age history & splendid works of internationally recognized regional artists are collected here.

Yelp
People are lovely but the museum looks sad. A bit of a revamp would do it some good. Entrance fee is so cheap, they probably don't have money to do that. It was in our way to the Carlsbad caverns so it was a convenient stop. But wouldn't make a detour to stop here.

Janet S.

Yelp
Admission to this beautiful place is free. The artwork as well as the Native American displays are fabulous. There was so much here that I would be doing visits once a month. Park your car behind the civic auditorium to walk cross the bridge to this museum

Jim L.

Yelp
Poorly run.....Balance is way slanted away from older New Mexico regional masters ......they have all but relegated the important Hurd paintings to the bin in the back.......Wyeth is barely a presence....I had to look hard for the minor Peter Rogers....Hey you guys....While you explore the new, try to remember why that museum was originally important and try to curb that new vision of yours least you forget its original intent ...... I have loved that museum for over 55 years.... In my opinion you have lost your anchor......sigh

Robert R.

Yelp
I was in Roswell in late October. The place was closed. Sign said it would reopen in September but it was still closed. I phoned the number on the sign and all I got were excuses on why it was closed or when it would reopen. Bummer. Update. I'm back in Roswell. Late May. Sign says "closed until further notice". I'd love to visit it, but the have to be open to do so.

Yelp
Not only is this a great museum for a town this size, but they offer a huge selection of classes for every age and also feature an artist talk and exhibition each month. There's a lovely outdoor seating area on the north side that is perfect for picnicking. The planetarium is here, too.

Pat K.

Yelp
Wonderful little museum. Amazingly good for such a small town. A nice little museum store also

Yelp
THIS IS NOT A KID FRIENDLY PLACE We were in there for less then 5 mins before they told us that our two years old is being to loud by walking that is how a two year old walks how are you going to tell us to make our two year old stop running and stomping if you have children under the age of 5 this is not a place to go

Josh K.

Yelp
It's free and very interesting. They had nice art and exhibits (many about history), and they had a special section of art that local high school kids had done.

Stephen B.

Yelp
A great eclectic mix of art and artifacts. Some of the art is by the same artists showcased in the Anderson museum (which is nearby). This museum features about 100 years of art. The recreation of the Goddard laboratory is a must see for rocket buffs.

TC B.

Yelp
A true gem in Roswell. I grew up in Roswell and this museum, for the size of town and considering it's free, is awesome. They have a lovely art collection and some of their exhibits are fantastic. Lots of internationally known artists who have a southwestern interest. And their gift shop is a fabulous place to do a little shopping. Their silver jewelry is wonderful and you know you aren't getting ripped off. The art museum is a definite 'must-see' for visitors and residents.
