We stayed in a historic room of the Rough Riders Hotel, off season it is much less expensive during the peak summer season. Walking distance from all the restaurants and museums, Theodore Roosevelt National Park is just blocks away. The room was comfortable, clean. Very friendly staff. The restaurant has AMAZING breakfast! Other meals are a bit pricey.

This is an historic hotel that has existed for about 140 years. It has been very well maintained but still looks it's age. We stayed in the historic portion of the building, which is a part of the main building. The rooms here are on the second floor and there is no elevator. Beware! |The room was fine, but on the small side. The bed was on the hard side, but not too uncomfortable. There is no refrigerator or microwave, but there is a small individual coffee pot with some coffee and teas. The bathroom has been redone and is very nice with an absolutely enormous shower but the water pressure in very low. Our room was very quiet, which we appreciated.|There is a newer side of the hotel that might be more comfortable.|The staff was very nice and accommodating to our questions and needs.|We stayed for 2 nights and it was fine, but if we were to stay here again, we would choose a room on the newer side.

Lovely hotel in Medora. Our room was large, clean, and attractive. The hotel lobby has a nice area to sit and relax, with a large library of books about the western United States. The hotel restaurant - Theodore's -- serve us an excellent dinner and breakfast. The location is excellent, right in Medora, allowing for evening walks around town. We would stay here again and highly recommend it.

Google
First the good part: you cannot beat the location of the hotel if you are planning to visit TRNP. It is literally within walking distance of the visitor center. It also pretty central to Medora itself, so you can walk to the town square and restaurants, not that you'll ever be able to get a seat to eat anywhere. The room was pretty spacious.||Now the bad part. We were relegated to the Wooley Boys "cabins" because we are a family of 5. These are not actual cabins - they are more like connected 1 story apartments, separated by a thin connecting door, which I can attest to does not keep out noise, as my neighbors had a baby who we heard late at night and early in the morning. But that really isn't the bad part. The "cabin" is literally located in an alley, across from a VERY active laundry facility that has this weird incessant beeping that happens every 2 minutes. Obviously it must be hot in there, because the workers keep the garage door (which we faced) open all day long. Directly in front of our 2' wide "patio" was a local resident's backyard. While they had nice landscaping, between the laundry and the awkwardness of staring into their yard, there was no way we were sitting outside. We also had the pleasure of being situated next to the dumpster, so garbage disposal was quite easy.||This was absolutely a let down after the amount of money we paid to stay here and seeing the beautiful pictures of the historic hotel, as we couldn't even see it. We were a block and a half away.

Glad we stayed in the local Medora town. We spent two days exploring national Park in the south and north unit in the door was very conveniently located. Easy to walk to restaurants and shops and hear the local music. Our room was fine with a comfortable bed and it was clean.

The lobby was pretty with an upscale rustic look. The check-in desk clerk was super friendly and helpful. We had a ground floor double queen room (not in the historic wing) and our window looked onto the back yards of the neighboring houses. There were blinds but no blackout curtains so bring your sleep mask if you want darkness. It was a small room but the layout worked well. The bathroom was large with a very nice tiled walk-in shower. The vanity was tall to accommodate the extra deep sink. Nice, thick towels were provided. The décor included a Theodore Roosevelt themed teddy bear and a coffee table book about Medora, both of which were available for purchase at the front desk. We parked in the small lot behind the hotel and there was a card-key door at that entrance which was very convenient to our room.

Google
This looked like a great location and indeed it was. They had amazing staff! We had been hiking all morning until check in so we were sweaty and exhausted when we arrived. Our rooms were not ready so they quickly shifted us into rooms that were ready so we didn’t have to wait. The hotel is absolutely gorgeous, the rooms were very clean and comfortable and I would highly recommend!

Google
This is as close to a perfect hotel as I've ever stayed in. If you're in the area make a point to stay if you need a stopover. The town is super cool, the hotel and bar and restaurant are amazing. What a treat.

Yelp
Last time in Medora we stayed at the Hyde House (which I highly recommend). This time we were in the hotel. Our room was clean and spacious. It seems they just remodeled the bathroom. Front desk staff were always friendly and helpful and the history and decor was wonderful!

Yelp
What more can be said about this hotel? First, it is a piece of history. It's cool to stay in a hotel that has been around since the late 1800s. And yet, the hotel has been very nicely updated to modern quality and standards. If you didn't know better, you might thing it was modern construction. We chose to spend a few extra dollars to reserve Room 501 -- the room that Teddy Roosevelt stayed in when he was in Medora. It was not a huge premium, and I highly recommend it. The room is on the corner facing into town, so you have 6 windows with a great view from the second floor. The room itself is not huge, but it's big enough. In addition to the king size bed, you get a desk and two comfortable wing-back chairs. The bathroom is very nice, with plenty of space and a huge walk-in shower. There is even a nice framed print explaining the history of the room -- very fun. We really enjoyed our stay in Room 501. It was very comfortable, and super-quiet. You should really spend the extra if it's available. Regardless, I think you would enjoy your stay in any room at this hotel.

Yelp
Ridiculous! As a hotel guest we were informed at 5:00 p.m. that the dining room was closed this evening. There were only TWO choices in the entire town for dinner - both bar & grill-type establishments that are in need of a thorough cleaning and disinfecting. Management is clueless. Disappointed doesn't even begin to cover it. Just found out that the dining room is closed for a private party...

Yelp
My wife and I stayed 2 nights recently. The place is beautiful and rooms are Excellent. It is surely the nicest hotel in town.it's convenient to teddy Roosevelt National park. We experienced two problems. 1- we were promised daily room service.the hotel said they stopped offering it,but was available upon request. We did not get it and when I questioned the specific staffer she said" there is a pandemic ". Obviously, the pandemic is over and she specifically said we would get the service. She also obviously lied and showed not a bit of concern when she was confronted with it. Lying is BAD! Also ,my wife got sick from out breakfast at the hotel. The dinners were wonderful. Was very disappointing that she got " bad Food" or food poisoning. Don't eat breakfast at hotel and one might consider " looking around" For lodging.

Yelp
Service was absolutely amazing. Our whole table ordered steaks, 3 rib eyes and 1 tenderloin. Each one of them were cooked to perfection. The staff was amazing and the wait time was acceptable

Yelp
A great place in the center of Medora and PERFECT for access to Theodore Roosevelt NP. Staff at the front desk were really friendly and gave us a choice of room. The room itself was bigger than I was expecting and had a fantastic bed, nice view over the town and an incredible walk in shower. The hotel has a fitness center which sadly I wasn't able to check out. There is a small parking lot adjacent to the building and overflow at the cafe across the street. It was nice and quiet at night and felt very cosy. The entrance lobby has nice seating and a fireplace which I bet will be awesome in fall/winter. Overall 4 stars is probably a little harsh. I would have given 5 stars if there was a breakfast included. The restaurant in the building did do a breakfast but for 2 people sharing it still came out as over $20 which seems a bit expensive for what it was (eggs and hash browns). I would definitely stay here again if I visit the area. It is easily the best place in town and only a 2 minute walk from all the bars/restaurants

Yelp
Our first visit to this absolutely charming town was made all the better by staying at this great independent hotel run by the Medora Foundation Pristine and charming, our room was perfect for us. Spacious and comfortable located in a perfect spot for visiting the national park within walking distance. Staff was professional and friendly. If your plans bring you to this part of the country try this place, you won't regret it.

Yelp
Friendly, charming and excellent COVID standards. This was a wonderful stop on our trip west. Friendly, knowledgeable staff with great recommendations for dinner, shopping, local history and a not to be missed dawn hot air ballon race-an unexpected treat. I highly recommend this hotel and Medora when visiting Theodore Roosevelt Ntl. Park. Our room was large, clean with lots of extras that included a fridge, coffee machine and very comfortable beds.

Yelp
Food was great! Was so surprised to have such a great meal right next to a national park. Had the duck with the Huckleberry reduction sauce. Was very tasty. The service team was friendly. Love the name of the place as well.

Yelp
If you plan to stay overnight in Medora, this is the place. Be sure and ask for Teddy Roosevelts Room if available, it's pretty unique. Clean, well maintained, very nicely decorated and the beds are really comfortable.

Jenny H.

Yelp
Clean rooms, quiet in the evenings, accommodating staff. We really enjoy staying here. Check out the restaurant located in the hotel!

Yelp
This is the perfect place to stay when visiting Medora. The staff are extremely friendly and helpful. The accommodations are excellent. The rooms are excellent in size, especially since you don't spend a lot of time in them. They are very quiet as well. Never heard another guest and the hotel was packed. Great toiletries provided as well. Fantastic areas to sit and relax both inside and out. The restaurant on site is excellent from discussions with other guest, but we never had the opportunity to eat there. Perfectly located for a highly recommended visit to Medora.

Yelp
Teddy would be pleased, his hotel is first rate, bully! When you first walk in there is a calm serenity and very efficient clerks. Opposite the front desk is a stupendous collection of books about Theodore Roosevelt or the area, very classy! The tower of rooms that were added are first rate. Our room was squeaky clean with a book about Theodore Roosevelt and a Teddy bear to greet you, clever marketing but in good taste. Beds, linens, electronics and generous amounts of electric sockets all added to the pleasure. The bathroom was elegance itself with no shower curtain, just a small hallway that became the shower itself. Stupendous! In New York or Chicago this might not be a five but in Medora, North Dakota it was a six!

Yelp
Stayed at the Rough Riders Hotel last night of the season. The front desk was awful. We asked about breakfast when we came in. He said yes, continental. No other info. The room had no check out time info, so when we went down for breakfast we were told it had just ended. Also he told us the lounge and restaurant were closed. Not true. The restaurant was accepting reservations and the lounge was open. What gives? I had the opinion he just wanted us gone.

Rita F.

Yelp
Not so good so far. Have had reservations fo a king bed for months. Only single or double queen available upon arrival. And room won't be available til 4:00 or later. Will update whenever they actually let me into a room . . . Also, no discernible internet in the lobby where I'm killing time til room is ready. All this for more than $200.00/night Update, Ended up (eventually) in a 2 queen room.room was nice, bathroom was nice. We were there at the end of their season & it showed. Staff not great - seemed short-tempered. Had lotsa 'rules' that needed to be followed. Not at all eager to return & certainly not recommending this hotel to friends.

Yelp
The staff here are so nice, and the service is pretty quick. The food is prepared very nicely and it tasted even better. The price is good for the quality that you get. I really recommend!

Yelp
If your idea of a good hotel is a comfortable night's sleep, skip this place. I always set a comfortable temperature for my room and have the fan run continuously to drown out noisy neighbors and traffic. Not possible at the Rough Riders Hotel. The air is centrally controlled. With a roar the air conditioner wakes me up and pushes a blast of cold air into the room, so I pull up the blankets. Then it stops, with a pinging sound in the air ducts, waking me up and leaving me sweltering while I listen to the people in the hallway. When I fell asleep again I was woken up by the roar of the air conditioner and have to find the blankets. All, damned, night. Oh, and the windows are sealed shut so fresh air is not possible. Just alternating freezing and sweating. Trucks start deliveries at 6am, with backup signals. If you like paying a lot of money to not sleep, this is your place. Otherwise check out the motels that surround the town.

Yelp
I came here on a group tour. We only stayed one night, but I found it very clean and modern, though charming. But here is my favorite part. I was in the travel group at this hotel for a buffet lunch. For unknown reasons, my need for a gluten-free lunch was not met, perhaps this had not been communicated to them. Almost all dishes were not OK for me. I explained my situation to a waiter. Very shortly I was served a delicious, freshly-made sandwich on fresh gluten-free bread. I didn't catch the waiter's name, but I am very grateful to him and the kitchen staff for their special attention. In other aspects, this hotel was lovely, clean, efficient, and a pleasure to stay at. Medora itself was likewise charming.

Yelp
We stayed two nights while touring the TRNP. The RRH is clearly a well-built structure, however the room we stayed in had a couple of things missing: 1) there was no table, so it was difficult to set up the laptop and get some work done. 2) There was only one comfortable chair to sit in, which was one too few for a room for two adults. Other than that, everything worked, even the unique, cave-like shower. The housekeeping crew did not visit our room, but we had enough towels, etc., to survive. The wifi was the fastest I've ever experience in any lodging. Most motels run at about 50 KB/s, but Ookla timed the RRH speed at 1,300 KB/s. That's blazing fast for motels/hotels!

Patti M.

Yelp
The food was outstanding and the service was great! We ordered prime rib, the French dip, and bison Osso bucco. Highly recommended!

Dorothy R.

Yelp
I loved the historic atmosphere and it was centrally located. However, when I made the reservation some type of warning should have been made that there was no elevator and we had to lug our heavy luggage up two flights of stairs (we are Seniors). They do not have a bellhop. The restaurant was wonderful though. Whenever we asked a question at the front desk, the clerks did not seem to know the area. One clerk did not even know where the post office was and it was directly across the street! My husband asked for extra pillows and was told no. Compared to other fine hotels, we did not feel welcomed.

Yelp
Great hotel in the midst of a very touristy town. It is clean, neat, up to date and modern. Bathroom is fantastic and beds are firm and comfortable. I would highly recommend this hotel in order to visit Theodore Roosevelt National Park, it is extremely close. The hotel is worth visiting even if you are not staying here just to see the library of books and the dining room. Bully!

Christina O.

Yelp
We stayed here a few nights while exploring the TRNP and were very pleased with our selection and the price was excellent! The room was comfortable and the beds were easy on the back! I love a hotel with a free continental breakfast, and this one was great! They had eggs, bacon, sausage, yogurts, fruits, grains... a well rounded selection to start your day before heading off to explore the area! The restaurant is on the pricy end of the scale, but the food was delicious! The staff was very friendly and attentive.

Yelp
Nice place. Wifi, TV. No fridge or microwave but lots of character. More news, Teddy Roosevelt did not have bed bugs, apparently.

Kale B.

Yelp
Oh cool hotel to stay at I really recommend it not really but yeah it's a good thing to say in the door I really enjoyed it because there's a park right by. an Edward Jones was with my family's business so it was pretty cool I recommend it for out of five stars just because they got no pool the end

Yelp
We stayed here this weekend and thought it was a super cute hotel in downtown Medora. It's the nicest place in town and therefore sells out most weekends. We paid $209 a night for a King room for Friday and Saturday nights. The rooms have definitely been updated. There are nice wooden shutters, a big leather headboard, very nice marble counters in the bathroom and a big shower without a door which provides a nice open air feeling. Didn't try the food because the restaurant seemed a bit stuffy but everything else was great!

Susie M.

Yelp
Thank you Rough Rider...I booked the wrong night but when we arrived the nice guy at the front desk got us booked! We had nice dinner and we're very comfortable in this historic hotel. Thanks

Randy K.

Yelp
Room OK in a Wild West tourist town. However, @$200, the price was much too high. And, breakfast was NOT included. Needed a late check-out as I was golfing early in the morning. Front desk clerk grudgingly agreed to an extra hour ('til noon). Won't budge on going to 12:30. Suggested that my wife keep the car and take me to the golf course. The customer service here leaves a lot to be desired. Between the lousy musical and overpriced hotel, we're feeling ripped off.
google avatar

Laksen R.

Yelp
Great hotel that is so close to the park. I loved the location because it was so quaint and charming. What stood out to me the most was how comfortable the beds were and the rain shower head (which is always a nice touch). The hotel has a library and a great restaurant. The free breakfast which is served at 5am was also good. Definitely the place to stay at if you visit.

Alison A.

Yelp
If you are looking for some authentic historic character, be aware that this is an overpriced builder-grade 1990s hotel with fake western decor. When we arrived (off season) the place was nearly empty but we were given a postage stamp-sized dark room with one tiny window that overlooked the (very loud) rooftop fan. They were kind enough to move us to a slightly larger, quieter room. But alternating hot and cold air blasting on us all night from the central air did not make for a comfortable night's sleep. Front desk told us to just close the vent, which was on the 9 ft ceiling and does not close anyway (we climbed on the bedstand to attempt). The lobby is sort of impressive but the rooms are not, and the staff wasn't very friendly or helpful. Would not recommend this place for the price.

Yelp
Hands down, best restaurant in town. Beautifully done dinning room, with great service, and food.

Donna M.

Yelp
Very nice stay at Rough Rider's Hotel. Room was clean and updated. Staff was friendly and helpful. Enjoyed our visit to Medora very much.

Yelp
Wow! What a beautiful, rugged hotel this is! There is a lovely reading area, fireplace, and bookshelves crammed with Teddy Roosevelt volumes (some about him, some written by him). It's about one minute from the park entrance. The restaurant (Theodore's) is really, really good. Great food (my husband's osso bucco was memorable, and they were very accommodating of my request for a bunch of veggie sides instead of meat; the leek and tomato bread pudding was spectacular) and very friendly service. Can't wait to return.
