"Key Summit Walk Although the Routeburn Track is a three-day trek, one can walk part of it as a 7-kilometer day hike. The Divide trailhead at one end of the track begins with a steady climb through a beech forest and sub-alpine shrubs and continues with a steep zigzag above treeline to Key Summit. A loop from the summit goes through a variety of environments, including small alpine ponds and bogs. Viewpoints from the summit and along the loop offer stunning vistas of the snow-capped Darran Mountains, Lake Marian, and the lengths of the Hollyford, Eglinton and Greenstone Valleys. It was an amazing experience! We took out 10 and 14 year old boys along. Highly recommend.

Direction: (Queenstown), Glenorchy To the divide, (te anau) Duration: I did the hike in 1 day. However it took me 11h including 2x 30min breaks. And I hurt my foot in the last third so walked that part quite slow. Personal Fitness: I'm an average hiker. Some people pass me, others I pass. I walk steady in medium speed and I had a light backpack. Trail: the first part was stunning. Beautiful landscape and lakes and view on the mountains. However after reaching Harris Saddle the way down was quite boring for the next 5-6h. There was 1 nice waterfall on the way to the carpark but it wasn't worth walking the rest. Recommendation: Start from Queenstown hike till Harris Saddle you get all of the nice views in that stretch and hike it back down. Totally doable as a das hike and much better than continuing through boring landscape that stretches forever. However if you really really want to do the whole trail start from the Devide and go towards Glenorchy. Then you have a long easy uphill and you'll get the good sights as a reward at the end also you safe 300m of elevation since Glenorchy located higher up.

I only did a section of the trek with a guided tour, but it was beautiful. We got to see some of the alpine wetlands and had a blast walking up and down as a day trek.

Great hike, our watch shows 36 km and we didn’t take any sidewalks. Average space was 20 minutes per kilometre. Completed it in two days. It’s almost always raining over there, so you will not have a possibility to stop. Sit relax and eat something while watching the views, prepare to be always on the go because of wind and rain.

An amazing trek! The scenery is breathtaking and diverse. The hike is moderately challenging and suitable for a variety of hikers. I recommend taking 2 nights to make the most of your days. Just be aware that it's not a circular trail; we took a shuttle between the two points to avoid backtracking.

Wonderful experience but I’d suggest best to go from routeburn shelter to Harris saddle shelter and then back
