Our stay at Roxanich was full of contrasts — moments of magic alongside a few (bad) surprises. When we first arrived, our room looked out onto the street and a gas station, not exactly the view you dream of when spending over €1,000 for a few nights in Motovun. We asked to change, and the staff accommodated us with a valley-view room, which was more aligned with our expectation.||The rooms themselves are boldly decorated in a fun, artistic way that makes the hotel feel unique and lively. You might like it or hate it, I personally thought it was nice and fun. The bed was comfortable but a little difficult to climb. Breakfast was good but we only discovered the last day that we could also order from a menu, we wish we would have known earlier… The dinner was also good— the restaurant team not only made us feel welcome but also impressed us with their spot-on wine recommendations. ||The highlight of our stay was the winery tour and tasting. Since there was no more land available to expand, the winery had been ingeniously built into the hillside across seven underground levels — a fascinating design that perfectly suited their biodynamic approach to winemaking. Learning about their process, and then tasting the results, was a great experience and the canapés paired with the wines were excellent. You can also see their garden which produces some of the fruits and vegetables used in the kitchen.||There were, however, some details that didn’t quite meet our expectations. The pool, while beautifully situated, isn’t heated and the water was quite cold. Service could at times feel slow, and the reception desk wasn’t always staffed — especially during checkout time, which felt odd and so we had to wait 15 minutes for someone to arrive. And when we asked if we could borrow a couple of pool towels for a beach day, our request was declined — something that struck us as a extremely disappointing for a hotel in this price category. They have 3 charging stations in the underground garage but none was working upon our arrival, the Porsche destination chargers on the outside parking were however working and both charging and parking were included which was nice.||You can walk to the medieval center of Motovun, it takes about 30 minutes from the hotel, it is a little steep but you can also take a shuttle that drives up every 30min from the foot of the hill. There is a grocery store in the same street where you can buy water and snack.||All in all, Roxanich is a truly distinctive place to stay, with stunning views, delicious food and wine — just be prepared for a few quirks along the way.
