Peradeniya Botanical Garden, located near Kandy in Sri Lanka, is the country’s largest and one of its most historic botanical gardens. It spans about 59 hectares (146 acres) and is renowned for its rich and diverse collection of more than 4,000 plant species, including palms, orchids, flowering trees, and many tropical woody plants.
Originally established in 1821 under British colonial rule, the garden has evolved from its early focus on introducing economically important plants—such as coffee, tea, and rubber—into a major center for horticulture, research, and conservation.
Today, it is celebrated for its scenic avenues of palms, extensive orchid houses, and tranquil landscapes, making it one of Sri Lanka’s most visited natural attractions.
