The Best Cruise Lines for Solo Travelers

"Royal Caribbean has more single cruise cabins than the average cruise line. Half of the ships in its fleet offer solo cabins, but if you’re looking for a private balcony, you’ll want to book the Anthem of the Seas, Quantum of the Seas, Ovation of the Seas, Harmony of the Seas, Spectrum of the Seas or the line's newest ship, Odyssey of the Seas."

This was my first cruise experience with my sister, and we absolutely loved it! Everything about our Royal Caribbean trip was amazing — the ship was beautiful, clean, and full of great activities. Our stateroom was comfortable with a stunning ocean view, and the crew was incredibly kind and helpful throughout the trip. The food, entertainment, and overall atmosphere made it one of the best vacations we’ve ever had. We truly appreciate the excellent service and unforgettable memories. Thank you, Royal Caribbean, for such a wonderful experience — we can’t wait to sail again! 🌊💙

Overall excellent experience 3.5 stars. Large variety of all day entertainment, activities for all ages and plenty of food choices included in packages. Affordable for all families if you stick to basic package. Just be vigilant in extra fees for carbonated soft drinks such as soda, alcohol, wifi and others. You have to purchase packages to get those. They can add up real quick. Also bring a water cup to refill for water. Water bottles for purchase are expensive. I feel wifi should be incorporated as part of room packages. That's how they get your money at the end with the extra add ons. Tips are mandatory and included if not already at the end of your check out bill and they are per person staying in room including children under 18. Can range from 18-30 a day per person depending on room selected.

Recently took an Alaskan cruise aboard the Quantum. Ship is huge, and more modern than the other RC ships we’ve been on for cruises to Mexico and the Bahamas (can’t remember their names). IMO, the two best things about how the cruise was managed were the extra efforts at cleanliness and sterility (e.g., “shaming” people into washing their hands before walking into the buffet—LOVE THAT!), and pervasive employment of technology for everything from sea passes to check-in. Additionally, although a staggering amount of food is wasted (I’ll get more into the food itself in a minute), portions are tiny and presented in such a manner that there’s no reason whatsoever for one person to touch more than their single serving. Both great things! As for the food itself, Meh. It’s good that the portions are small, because although the food LOOKS good, overall it’s pretty bland. In fact, much of the time, if we didn’t know what we were eating because we could see it, we’d never know what we were eating. It was THAT flavorless! My husband and I even talked about blindfolding each other and playing “Guess what you’re eating” :-) We think this is intentional, since there’s no way the culinary staff could season every dish to the satisfaction of 5000 passengers. Therefore, what I dubbed “elementary school cafeteria food”, or “retirement home food” was the standard fare. Truth in Lending: We opted out of dining at any of the on-board restaurants that had an up-charge, so I can’t vouch for their food. The pizza shop was decent, and our default choice when the Windjammer wasn’t exciting us. We also ordered the “complimentary” room service breakfast (yes, we tipped generously!), which I’d give a 50/50. The cold items were fine, but we did everything we could to make the oatmeal edible—and failed. We were thrilled to have a little fridge in our stateroom; I did bring back several bowls of fruit for snacking…one of my favorite things (produce that someone else prepared!) Our balcony room was nice, and our attendant (Wen) was efficient and professional. I spent HOURS on that balcony watching the coast of the Inside Passage go by, and we saw lots of whales and a big school of some kind of big dark fish as we were sailing. Neither of us got seasick, thank goodness! And we appreciated the captain making the decision to return south via the Inside Passage rather than open sea because of a big storm. We slept surprisingly well, especially given that our room was directly beneath the largest buffet on the ship. We packed a small fan for white noise, but it wasn’t enough noise that it would have drowned out noisy passengers or ship noises. Whomever built the ship made it much more soundproof than older ships. Smoking: Not an issue!! As militant non-smokers, we were thrilled to hear that passengers are no longer allowed to smoke on their balconies or anywhere else besides two specific spaces on two decks, and the smoking area of the casino. No longer do you have to walk through the smog of the casino to get to the theater!! Hallelujah! And even better news: whatever air cleansing(?) system they’re using in the casino is doing a fantastic job. I literally had to look around me to see whether anyone was smoking when we spent about an hour playing penny slots. I could SEE a woman smoking about 20 feet from me, but there was only one moment where I caught the faintest whiff of cigarette smoke. LOVE THIS! Last, and this is one of the two reasons I’m giving four stars rather than five, the constant attempts at up-selling and nickel-and-diming passengers was relentless, and the cruise line-hosted excursions were ridiculously expensive. We intentionally sought locally-owned activities/excursions, and had an awesome time. We even rented a car from a small local company in Juneau and had a blast! We don’t drink, so passing on anything involving alcohol was easy. I have to give the crew kudos for not ignoring us once they realized we weren’t drinking. The staff were amazing! Overall, very enjoyable experience, but we think we’re just not “cruise people”.

We recently sailed on Navigator of the Seas. Overall, the included food was disappointing. The buffet food was honestly disgusting, and the main dining room was extremely inconsistent—some nights the meals were good, while other nights they were barely edible. The constant inconsistency made dining frustrating and took away from the experience. Another drawback was the limited time spent at port compared to other cruise lines—we would have appreciated more time to explore. On a positive note, the service throughout the ship was excellent. Staff is amazing, extremely kind and very helpful. As for entertainment, we tried to watch five different shows, but the first two were canceled due to technical difficulties—twice. We finally managed to see the performance on the third attempt. Unfortunately, the first cancellation notice only came after we had already waited 30 minutes, and the second time guests weren’t informed until after an hour of waiting. It would be much better if communication about these issues were more proactive so guests can plan their time accordingly.

We had a lovely time on Navigator Of The Sea. We did a four night cruise with four generations of family. There was so much to do. We didn't do it all. Our grandkids. Love the flowrider, the two water slides, the climbing wall, the shows, the frozen drinks, The food, our waiters, the balloon animals, being together. We were in the interior rooms which were not bad at all. We had enough room. There was plenty of closet space and drawers and we would go again. This was our first time on Royal. It was nice being in a dark room to sleep. And all of our rooms were next door to each other, so we had many bathrooms. Instead of a sweet which only has one. We loved the food and the service. Especially Joel and Joseph our dining room waiters. All the kids were at one table and they took such good care of them. Doing magic tricks, being funny, talking, They even cut their steaks up for them. Can't say enough about them ❤️ The ship was beautiful, the rooms were comfortable, the staff was fabulous, We made some great memories. There is a lot to do on that ship. I was worried because we had done a Carnaval cruise and did not enjoy it. But this one was wonderful. Perfect for multi-generations. There's something for everyone.

First time cruiser here. Don't know what I don't know, but I can say that this experience was very positive and entertaining. There were some dinner shortcomings here and there but the food options are over the top. You can't do everything they have to offer, not enough time and you have to sleep at some point. Our 5 day Cabo San Lucas cruise was just long enough. I would regret not saying that the on board crew are extremely hard working and at the most accommodating folks I've seen in a long time. Warning: keep an eye on your tab! Things add up fast. Great trip, good food, excellent activities and wonderful people.

We just returned from our Royal Caribbean cruise, and it was such a memorable experience—especially for my daughter, as it was her very first cruise. From start to finish, the service exceeded our expectations. One of the highlights was the My Time Dining experience. We enjoyed an elegant five-course dinner each evening, and every dish was absolutely delicious. The dining room itself was beautiful, but what truly stood out was the service. Our head waiter, Painsli, along with the lovely Manlu, went above and beyond to make sure we were comfortable. From thoughtfully placing napkins on our laps to checking in regularly to ensure we had everything we needed, their kindness and attentiveness made dinner feel extra special. We also want to give a big thank you to our room attendant, Yoda. He not only kept our room in perfect order but also took the time to converse with us. We asked him many questions about his job, and he answered them with such patience and warmth, which made the experience feel personal and informative. Overall, this cruise was everything we hoped for and more. Excellent food, outstanding staff, and wonderful service made it a trip we will always remember. My daughter is already talking about our next cruise!

Terrible experience at Navigator of the seas 7 nights (Nov 24 - Dec 1). Unfortunately the WaterSplash activities was the key decision factor for my family and NEVER was working... Yes, Never works! In addition, I tried to talk with Guests service on the deck 5, however Mr Balthazar was extremely rude, even I trying to explain that my daughter is very said and I would like to talk with the manager, he said no, nothing to be done and please call to Royal Caribbean office in Miami just after the cruise finished.... Was unbelievable to receive this answer, I was inside the cruise, sailing and nobody from Royal Caribbean guest support team wasn't able to talk to me ??? .. Please don't waste your money, I do recommend Norwegian Bliss ... It is extremely better, all entertainment works as promised and the guest team it is more friendly.
