Recently took an Alaskan cruise aboard the Quantum. Ship is huge, and more modern than the other RC ships we’ve been on for cruises to Mexico and the Bahamas (can’t remember their names).
IMO, the two best things about how the cruise was managed were the extra efforts at cleanliness and sterility (e.g., “shaming” people into washing their hands before walking into the buffet—LOVE THAT!), and pervasive employment of technology for everything from sea passes to check-in.
Additionally, although a staggering amount of food is wasted (I’ll get more into the food itself in a minute), portions are tiny and presented in such a manner that there’s no reason whatsoever for one person to touch more than their single serving. Both great things!
As for the food itself, Meh. It’s good that the portions are small, because although the food LOOKS good, overall it’s pretty bland. In fact, much of the time, if we didn’t know what we were eating because we could see it, we’d never know what we were eating. It was THAT flavorless! My husband and I even talked about blindfolding each other and playing “Guess what you’re eating” :-) We think this is intentional, since there’s no way the culinary staff could season every dish to the satisfaction of 5000 passengers. Therefore, what I dubbed “elementary school cafeteria food”, or “retirement home food” was the standard fare. Truth in Lending: We opted out of dining at any of the on-board restaurants that had an up-charge, so I can’t vouch for their food. The pizza shop was decent, and our default choice when the Windjammer wasn’t exciting us. We also ordered the “complimentary” room service breakfast (yes, we tipped generously!), which I’d give a 50/50. The cold items were fine, but we did everything we could to make the oatmeal edible—and failed.
We were thrilled to have a little fridge in our stateroom; I did bring back several bowls of fruit for snacking…one of my favorite things (produce that someone else prepared!)
Our balcony room was nice, and our attendant (Wen) was efficient and professional. I spent HOURS on that balcony watching the coast of the Inside Passage go by, and we saw lots of whales and a big school of some kind of big dark fish as we were sailing.
Neither of us got seasick, thank goodness! And we appreciated the captain making the decision to return south via the Inside Passage rather than open sea because of a big storm. We slept surprisingly well, especially given that our room was directly beneath the largest buffet on the ship. We packed a small fan for white noise, but it wasn’t enough noise that it would have drowned out noisy passengers or ship noises. Whomever built the ship made it much more soundproof than older ships.
Smoking: Not an issue!! As militant non-smokers, we were thrilled to hear that passengers are no longer allowed to smoke on their balconies or anywhere else besides two specific spaces on two decks, and the smoking area of the casino. No longer do you have to walk through the smog of the casino to get to the theater!! Hallelujah! And even better news: whatever air cleansing(?) system they’re using in the casino is doing a fantastic job. I literally had to look around me to see whether anyone was smoking when we spent about an hour playing penny slots. I could SEE a woman smoking about 20 feet from me, but there was only one moment where I caught the faintest whiff of cigarette smoke. LOVE THIS!
Last, and this is one of the two reasons I’m giving four stars rather than five, the constant attempts at up-selling and nickel-and-diming passengers was relentless, and the cruise line-hosted excursions were ridiculously expensive. We intentionally sought locally-owned activities/excursions, and had an awesome time. We even rented a car from a small local company in Juneau and had a blast! We don’t drink, so passing on anything involving alcohol was easy. I have to give the crew kudos for not ignoring us once they realized we weren’t drinking. The staff were amazing!
Overall, very enjoyable experience, but we think we’re just not “cruise people”.
