My wife, 10yo son, and myself did the Bighorn Sheep Canyon trip a couple weeks ago. We loved it and had a blast (our first time whitewater rafting), but wanted to raise it up a notch and do the Royal Gorge route that is more intense.
This time we left our son with family and brought my brother and his older son along, as this route can go up to class V. I want to give a special thanks to our guide, Bono, for being an awesome guide. He was knowledgeable about the region and we had great conversation in between rapids. He was an artist with a paddle, deftly maneuvering us to keep our raft going in the right-ish direction. He was also really generous and helped my family record this unforgettable experience.
I brought my GoPro and recorded our trip from my POV, but around the halfway point, Bono suggested he could wear it and get the whole raft. Still going through the footage but so far it is amazing and really captures our actions (and reactions) far better than my POV at the front. The action shots from the in house photographers are phenomenal as well.
If you're on the fence about doing this, just send it. You won't see a sad face on a raft.
PS: If you're from sea level too (and/or the south), I suggest wearing UV long sleeve shirt and pants. I was advised this by a family friend and confirmed during my first trip. The Arkansas is in the upper 50s at the end of July. The sun is intense, but the moment the sun is blocked you feel the chill of the water.
