I have been so excited to write this review! I've been in CO for 2+ years, but truly have not done nearly enough "tourist" activities. When my mom came to town this last weekend she requested we do a train ride. There are multiple to chose from, but we went with this one because it didn't go up in elevation.
What we got:
We prepaid for the Vista Dome so we could see as much as possible on our ride. (However, the best view is definitely from the open air train car that you can go visit throughout the ride.) We also ordered a meal for each of us prepaid + a photo from the train.
This is one of those things that I think would be wonderful for people who are not from Colorado. The price tag does not really reflect from the experience. With the food each persons total came out to about $160. We did get the more expensive train car (we wanted a table to eat our food at,) but even with that considered, it just seemed overpriced. Please understand this does not mean I didn't enjoy the experience, I really did. It was such a cool little spot, the wait staff definitely took some extra time to give us fun facts along the ride. It was super relaxing/pretty & we even saw some white tail rams along the Royal Gorge rocks! It just didn't seem like $160 worth. And I'm not sure what else they could do differently to make it worth it. But there were a few flaws in the overall experience.
When we first sat down our sever started our orders. We weren't hungry yet, so we ended up waiting a while to order real food, but the drinks seemed to take a while. We did get a super cute souvenir cup with our drink, just included (no additional fee.) When we did finally order the food was... mediocre. We each ordered something different & although it all tasted okay, it just wasn't spectacular overall. But to be honest, I didn't expect much from a meal on a moving train to begin with. I was just happy they had food. They did seem to have a silverware issue though. They only gave one of us silverware, so the other two were looking for some most of the meal. Just seemed like a weird oversight on the servers.
My biggest complaint was that we didn't get our photos until after the train was over? I'm not exactly sure what the situation was, but we never saw a photographer staff & when we asked a server she said "oh he should have been around," then no one ever came to us or brought it up again. We ended up taking it when we got off on a greenscreen, which we didn't really mind, just seemed to be out of place. Everyone was getting theirs printed already, so I was confused on when they got theirs to begin with?
Nonetheless the experience was really fun. I'm glad I did it, it's definitely not something I would have just randomly chosen to do myself. But I just feel like they could step it up in various ways. The situation on the photos, season the food a little more (it all looks good, the flavor just really wasn't there,) & get the food serving sequence down a little more steady. I feel like with these experiences it takes so little to "step it up." Like having silverware already on the table. Having a spokesperson position to give the info instead of servers randomly telling you things because they heard you talking about something & just overall price adjustment/reflecting. Not to mention the gift shop prices are insane. We all saw stuff we would have loved to get, but it was so price gauged (like $30 for a miniature stuffed animal, or $40 for a themed shirt?) If the experience had felt more upscale, maybe I wouldn't be complaining about their price tag. It just seems very "here's a train, enjoy it" when we wanted an *experience.*
