Enjoyed myself! It’s not a fancy hotel but it’s got everything you would ever need in a completely ideal location and for a very good price. Felt safe and clean. There was lovely music on the night I stayed. Very kind people.

Close to the beach without a bug price tag. Kitchen was very slim on flatware, dishes, etc. Air conditioner in one room never really did much, but worked okay in the other room. Definetly an old school experience and hey we knew it wasn't a big high end hotel so it was fine.

Great locally owned business in a prime location one block from the beach. They offer umbrellas, chairs, and towels to take to the beach. 24/7 laundry machines available, very cheap pricing as well for that. They also sell detergent for $1/load at the front desk. They have live music and hula dancers on Wednesday nights in the lobby that play for a few hours, great sense of community. Only complaint is some ants in the bathroom.

From start, this is more like 3-4* review but considering all the circumstances, a solid 5*. The room was very dated but everything functional. You can't beat the location, you can see Waikiki Beach from front of the hotel. That leads to a negative, very noisy at all times so be sure you have earplugs for night sleep. The staff is super friendly and willing to help within the limits. There are free beach towels for your convenience. The room had a full kitchenette, very dated but again, all you need to prepare your own food and avoid the insane restaurant prices. There is a laptop size safe. The TV has lots of good quality channels. The water pressure was great for both cold and hot. There is a small pool in the interior court but never used it being about 200m from Waikiki Beach. On Wednesday evenings there is a nice music concert in the main area, free to attend. No unexpected fees confirmed and this was basically the reason I stayed at this hotel. Despite some significant negatives, when coming back to Honolulu this hotel will be on top of my choices.

I stayed at the royal grove hotel for little over a week and wad happy here. It is close to the beach, has a decent pool (though I did not use it) and also good location for getting around as it is close to the bus. ||Could be a bit noisy sometimes, but I did nit mind. ||The room was a bit old, but I had read that before so I knew in advance. My room had a small kitchen. They only thing that was missing from there was diswashing soap and something to dry the dishes with... could have been nice if that had been provided

Google
We loved this motel! It is in a great location with amazing food all around it. Little convenience store downstairs and amazing poke as well. So close to the beach and we loved the pool. We will be staying again in June and we are excited. Dated motel interior, but we like an older feel. Overall, great location and awesome little spot.

Google
What was great, the location and the bed, is comfy. What was bad, everything else. The hotel needed to be renovated decades ago extremely tired and broken. The noise from the corridor, street and aircon was incredibly loud which made sleep difficult. A very cramped room with virtually no spare space for bags. It was not as advertised and was not worth What we paid for. I could go on more but will give my 2 comments IT IS THE WORST HOTEL WE HAVE STAYED AT. NEVER EVER STAY THERE

I stayed here for a family vacation and was extremely satisfied with our hotel room. The hotel has friendly staff and the beach is just two blocks away! You can easily find public parking as well. The staff was so friendly!

Yelp
I stayed here for a week and a half and just got home a few days ago. I love this hotel and definitely plan to return. Of course it's been around for years and isn't perfect. But for what it is, it's a gem. The Royal Grove is smack in the center of Waikiki. The beach, the International Marketplace, the Royal Hawaiian Center, and great restaurants and food trucks are all within a few blocks. It seems impossible to find a better Waikiki location short of an ocean front hotel, where one night probably costs close to what a week costs here. Yes, it's old and not recently renovated. But personally I found that to be charming. This place felt like stepping back into a Honolulu of the past. I had a large room with a full kitchen (the appliances were well-used, but everything worked and dishes were provided). It was like living in my own studio apartment, and not just staying in a cookie cutter hotel room. My only real complaint are the doors. All the room doors have vent slats in them, which means there's basically no sound barrier between the room and the hallway. Outside noise is expected in a city, but the interior noise every time people passed by talking in the hall did get annoying. But it wasn't bad enough to deter me from returning to this hotel. If a little peeling paint, old lamps, and dust in obscure corners bothers you, and you need everything to be perfect - don't stay here. Please. You won't like it. You'll complain. You'll write a bad review for a hotel that truly shines for what it is. Spend more money and stay at the Hyatt Regency across the street, or any of the other more expensive hotels nearby. But if you're cool with things being a little rough on the edges, you find an old retro vibe to be charming, and you like a great value, you won't do better than the Royal Grove. Staff is super friendly, the place is clean, the rooms are spacious, housekeeping is attentive. And Waikiki beach is a block away.

Greg T.

Yelp
The hotel was older (not a big deal at all) but there were zero upgrades done to the property. The doors use regular keys and there is not a deadbolt. There is a sign in the room stating that you should keep valuables in the safe... I guess they are not secure in your room. These are items I can look past. Four days into my six day stay, I get a knock on the door while taking a nap. It's room service and she states "room service" and I politely decline and go back to napping. Five minutes later, another knock and someone is demanding I open the door. I thought it was room service so I said "no thanks" and she said "open the door now" so I quickly put on shorts and open it. She said "why are you here, this room should have been vacant as of yesterday" and my response was, "I hope not I have 3 more days" and she demands my name and says she will look into it. I checked all my online booking information and went downstairs to confirm what I have. She greets me very rudely and states that she will have to wait to talk to her Mananger but I was checked out as of the prior day. Look, I understand there are mishaps and errors but the rude tone was not called for. She also never got back to me on if everything was corrected... nor did I get an apology for the confusion. I had to reach out to the chat option on Expedia and even they were not sure what the outcome would be. So I continued to stay there hoping when I got back to my room that night, all my belongings would still be in the room. The room was ok, it did smell like stagnant water but besides that, the lack of upgrades and the rude staff (just that lady, everyone else was incredible), the Royal Grove is at a great location in Waikiki.

Yelp
I've stayed here three times in the last two years and each visit I've gotten a great nights sleep. The rooms have always been clean. It's not a new hotel but it's a great location. They have round the clock staff. They have dairy cleaning if you want it there's a small pool and it's a fair price. If you're looking for something fancier, this is not the place in fact when you get into your room don't immediately judge it. It's a great place. If you're open to what is it what it is you'll find it's a gem.

Morgan M.

Yelp
Stayed here for one night and left early for airport. This hotel has a great central location and they let us leave our bags with them for several hours before we could check-in. They did tell us absolutely no checking in early. The room itself was very dingy and run down. It was quite small and the furniture was mismatched and looked very worn. It also appeared to not be super clean though the sheets had some hairs on them, we just brushed them off and went to bed. The light fixture had bugs moving around in it and the sounds of the street below were extremely loud. Also be aware there is no parking on site but they have a list of other locations. We didn't use the pool but it looked clean and enjoyable. We could see a sliver of the ocean from our balcony. Can't complain for the price and if you're just looking for a place to sleep at night this would be it.

Caden R.

Yelp
The check-in time on the website and your itinerary says it's at 3:00 PM. Unfortunately, when I tried to check-in at 3:00 PM they informed me ' Check-in is from 3:00 - 5:00 PM.' And that my room wouldn't be ready until 5:00 PM. If that is the case, they need to preface that on their website instead of advertising a 3:00 PM check-in time.

Yelp
Unfortunately, I am unable to edit my original review. I see a bunch of typos in my haste to post with the intention to proofread later. Here is an update and I will edit my original below it just because the typos bother me and I wanted to improve it. Ha ha. I just can't get over reading other reviews of people who were harassed because they monitor if you have guest come to your room. Thank God my friend, who lives locally, could not take off work to come visit me when I stayed here. If any of the hotel staff confronted me about having a guest come to my room it would have ruined my entire trip, not that the poor conditions of the room made it any more pleasant. I have never been to a hotel where they questioned invited guests. This hotel should remove their no guest policy. They should be thankful they even have people tpaying them any type of money to stay in these poor conditions. This hotel is great for the location and I would have considered it mainly for that fact, but their strict no guest policy bothers me. CORRECTED ORIGINAL REVIEW: I'd give this place 5 stars for the location and most employees I encountered. It was so nice to be at the beach in a matter of minutes. There were several popular cheap eats next door (poke, bbq, and musubi across the street, and restaurants with live music along two blocks to the beach. The other reviews that describe the furnishings and room condition are fairly accurate. I was going to choose 2 stars but I read it stood for "could have been better". To be honest, the only thing that could have made this better is if the whole building be condemned and an entirely new building rebuilt. The doorknobs/hardware was loose and flimsy. I did not feel safe at all. There was one wall with smaller curtainless windows up high in a corner. All the lights from the surrounding buildings and street made it seem light a bright beacon that magnified into the room at night which made REM sleep unattainable. At 5am the amplified noises from street sweepers and refuse trucks with the beeping reverse alarm and squeaky trash compactors provided as an urban alarm, which actually helped me get an early start to plan out my day and be out for sunrise and beating the morning crowds. This was the only positive. Throughout my time there I only had the mirror that sat inconveniently high above the bathroom sink. I could only check the decency of my outfit discreetly in public by the mirror covered walls by the lobby. I'm not the type to stay in 5 star hotels, since I only intend to sleep, but it is not possible to have a relaxing night and wake up refreshed at this hotel. As much as I loved, loved, loved the location and the maintenance people and housekeepers, I probably wouldn't go again. There might be better comparably priced hotels in the area.

Yelp
This hotel falsely advertises to get people to buy. The pictures of the room we were shown were not the rooms we were given. Then, when we addressed this, the lady told us, "Well, those are just general pictures." That makes no sense when people purchase based on what they see. If my room isn't going to look like that or very similar, don't show me. Our room literally had two queen sized beds right next to each other. One with no headboard sitting in what probably should have been the dining area, and the refrigerator was across the room by the dresser. The kitchenette they show is large. The one in the room is tiny. The window was boarded with plywood. They advised us, upon checking in, that the water would be cut off the next day from 9am to 12 noon for repairs. If that's the case, don't put people in those rooms. What they failed to mention is that there was no hot water. After running the water for what seemed to be at least 30 min... there was no hot water. All of this I could have overlooked if the rooms had been clean because honestly, we were in Hawaii to play and were only going to sleep in the room. But no, the rooms were filthy! The sheets and mattresses were all stained, there was layers of dirt caked in windows and corners of the room. There were blood and booger stains on the sheets and other stains on the mattresses and couch cushions. We checked out as soon as we found other lodging. This was honestly a travesty, and if we hadn't found another hotel, it would have ruined our trip.

Yelp
Brian and Denise were very helpful at the front desk!! They both came upstairs to our room to help with our TV and were patient and friendly thru the process. The AC was dripping in our room getting the curtain and floor wet so Brian gave us a new room and apologized for the inconvenience. My sister had a question about something else and Brian was very friendly guiding her on what to do.

Yelp
No parking when website says "parking". Customer service sucks. Room very old, outdated. No outlet for hubs cpap machine. Do not recommend this place

Dan S.

Yelp
So I really can't argue the point when people say that the place looks outdated. You just have to look at it for what it is, an older hotel that is one blocks from the beach. If you are looking for five star then you have to spend five star money. I wasn't willing to spend five star money for a hotel room that I was only gonna sleep in and not hang out in during the day while in Hawaii. We did have a few problems. TV remote did not work and our room did not have a coffee maker. Within an hour telling them both issues were fixed. They went out to the store and bought us a brand new coffee maker and delivering it for our morning coffee. To me that is five star service at a three star facility. As far as the towels and room cleaning service it states right at the front desk you when you check in that must request those services and you cannot be present in the room while they tidy up your room. Would I stay here again... FOR SURE. This Hotel does not have parking and good luck finding it. We paid $50.00 for parking the first night, so we drove back to the airport and turned in the car. The bus runs all over the Island and the major stop is only 2 blocks away.

Steve A.

Yelp
I'm giving this place 5 stars and no this is not the nicest, cleanest, quietest place to stay but it is exactly what I expected. Throwback vintage feel. Excellent location in the heart of Waikiki. This town doesn't sleep between nightlife and early beach goers. Curtains drawn and ac humming was more than enough for us to get great sleep on our visit. Glad there are places like this where we can visit from our neighboring island for a city beach life getaway and not break the bank. I would recommend group traveling with friends where you can basically have a whole wing to yourselves. Pool is nice and sunny during the day and a great place to relax when you're waiting for your next excursion. Our room was small but equipped with two beds and a full kitchen. If you appreciate old school charm, have a thing for vintage Hawaii or tiki culture this place is a good fit. Convenience market in the building as well as excellent poke spot. Cheap coined laundry on site is one of the useful amenities offered. Old school cool lobby adds to the vibe. A piano is located on covered lanai area off pool so I assume they could have live music nights. Will be back. Picked up a cool shirt on our last day. Glad to see family run business in a sea of major corporations.

Brittney M.

Yelp
BEWARE: Disgusting. Disturbing. Dishonest. A DUMP! Royal Grove Waikiki is a SCAM and should be closed down for both advertising fraud and multiple health code violations. Too bad Yelp does not allow for zero stars. Before I say anything else, my husband and I are fully aware we paid about $50 less than what other hotels in the surrounding area were likely charging for the evening. Although, that does not excuse the basic standard of cleanliness, sanitation, and safety this "hotel" lacks. This is a VERY old hotel, barely still standing, and should be called a motel versus a hotel. We made our booking through HotelTonight.com, which we have never had an issue with in the past. Within seconds of checking in and walking in, we were completely horrified to the point of tears of the state of the common area as well as our claustrophobic room. There was what appeared to be black mold or some kind of fungus in the carpet, a half-set bed, brown stains on the couch, chairs, and window panes, an insufficient AC unit, peeling paint on the walls and in the bathroom, a clogged shower drain, and a lack of warm water. After calling HotelTonight, we expressed our frustration and fear for our safety to the front desk. The front desk refused to do anything for us at first, but finally offered to let us see another unit and move us to that room. Prior to moving units, we investigated the state of the space. It was just as gruesome, if not more so than our original room with strange stains everywhere and cockroaches on the walls! I'm sure there were cockroaches or other insects in our original room as well, we just did not see them. If there is one cockroach, there's certainly many. Nearly two hours after we checked in and after I threatened to contact an inspector, the manager ultimately granted us a refund, all while trying to defend the state of the hotel. At after midnight, we were forced to walk around downtown Waikiki with no accommodations for the evening. We ultimately were not able to find another hotel with availability and stayed up the whole night. Overall, this establishment needs to be shut down. Their website and Instagram is nothing but a bunch of stock images (likely purchased and honestly laughably fabricated) and their third-party's photos are edited to an insane degree, showcasing a completely made-up, fake hotel and accommodations. Truly horrid, sleazy, and rotten. Save yourself any financial or health issues and spend the extra money to stay somewhere else in Honolulu.

Jasmine E.

Yelp
To start off, the location of this hotel is great. Just a few blocks away from the beach. You can actually see the water from the street once you exit the lobby. The poke place on the corner (Maguro's) was very good, and the musubi/onigiri shop was frequented by us every day that we were there. Overall, very good location. However, if it weren't for those things I would probably give it a one star. It is not the cleanest place. I'm not expecting a luxury hotel by any means, but things could definitely be cleaned a little better or updated. My biggest complaint has got to be the fact that you can hear EVERYTHING going on in the hallways, and even other peoples rooms. The doors have metal grates on the bottom half, so any noises that are made in the hallway can be heard. Even if people aren't necessarily trying to talk loudly, it's still extremely noticeable. I'm a deep sleeper, so staying asleep wasn't a big issue for me. But for anyone that's a light sleeper, you might need ear plugs or head phones. Lastly, there isn't any parking at this hotel. You have to park at a different hotel a few blocks away, and it's $30/day. We didn't personally mind the walk to and from the parking garage and this hotel, but it's something to consider before booking if you don't want to park somewhere else.

Colleen B.

Yelp
The pictures for this property have been done up to look nice. But if you believe the pictures you will be disappointed. The room was not clean when we arrived. There was old candy in the cabinets and the floor has not been vacuumed. The sheets and towels are dingy and you can see multiple places where there has been water damage. While we were there, our shower started to leak in the room below. We were given a extra room to shower in that was at the opposite end of the hotel. We lived like this for a week (which was a hardship with 4 small children) and we were never given updates to when or if it had been fixed. I think that the staff got confused about our extra room to shower in, because one day my razor and all my product went missing. I assume it was all thrown away but housekeeping by accident. Now I'm going to have to spend the money to replace it all and as of right now the motel has not offered to replace it. However, it is a 2 minute walk from the beach, and there are multiple places to get yummy food next to the hotel. There is also a laundry room, which is very nice for long stays. And except for throwing away my things and having to go on a hike to get a shower, the staff was very nice. The pool was closed while we where there, but it is very small. It was weird because the stairs to the room share a space with one of the restaurants kitchen, and I have no idea how they pass to be open, because the kitchen is very dirty.

Chris C.

Yelp
This hotel has a serious cockroach problem. I alerted the Health Department since management did not take my concern seriously. I could hear them all night long and saw them run when I turned on the lights.

Karina V.

Yelp
If i could give them a negative i would! This hotel is disgusting! This is a SCAM, their website pictures are nothing like what the actual rooms look like. Their are bugs in the shower , and cockroaches in the common area. the balcony sliding door are broken can't locked it, it feel so unsafe staying in this hotel. You can hearing everything that's going on outside the room like streets noise, hallway and other guests room. What funny is my family stay on the floor below us can hear us talked lol. There are red stains on the current and ceiling. The chairs are so gross and disgusting we didn't dare to sit on it. The sheets was so old that it doesn't feel soft anymore it feel like rough rags. The whole entire stay we did not dare to go under the sheets we literally slept on top of the bed. My sister's room have hair under the sheets, they did not clean after the previous guests checked out! The wall ac unit was loud and doesn't cool down the entire room at all. The bathroom & closet has a foul smell. The closet paint are peeling and they don't even bother to do anything about it. The electric outlet making weird staticky sound every so often, it's quite scary. I post some pictures, i wish i can post everything! Beware do not stay in this hotel, it ruined our whole trip morale!

Heather S.

Yelp
l understand being an "Old Hawaii" hotel, but "Old Hawaii" doesn't mean run down and dirty. It means CHARM..... Palm tree wall paper, wicker furniture, tropical bedding, etc. The room was insanely dirty. I've never seen such a thick layer of dust as I saw on the tops of the picture frames. The top of the fridge also had a thick layer of dust. The sliding door frame was extremely dirty and the curtain didn't even reach the floor. There was black mold along the edges where the wall and ceiling meet. The vent in the bathroom was absolutely disgusting. The vent in the ceiling of the elevator was just as bad. I didn't want to walk around barefoot because I can only imagine how dirty the old carpet is. The wooden bathroom door had a white patch job at the bottom where it appears that someone kicked a hole in it. The air conditioner couldn't keep up and even after running it nonstop all day, I was still sweating all night. There was no bedding other than sheets provided but I didn't even need the top sheet because it was so hot. I wish the air conditioner had worked better because it was So LOUD that I couldn't sleep. The pool wasn't open and I wasn't notified ahead of time. I probably would have stayed somewhere different because I chose this hotel because of the pool. I wonder if they have housekeeping service because I ran out of toilet paper after the first day and had to get some from my brother who was staying somewhere else. The tap water tasted good though.

Veronica C.

Yelp
Ended up here after arriving at my original accommodation and seeing that they were closed for the night. Very old, grimey hotel. But it is located close to the main areas, cheap pricing, and a very kind front desk worker. They also offer 24 hour check in so it worked out great. Can't complain with the price. But honestly this place just needs to replace the towels and pillow cases, touch up the walls with a little paint, and deep clean the baseboards and it would be a better experience.

Erika D.

Yelp
Roaches on Day 1. Room absolutely uninviting. Floors dirty. Absolutely old, and not the cute old type. Disappointed. Signs posted in the room saying to not leave your valuables inside the room. Please take your business somewhere else. Not family friendly. Highly highly DO NOT RECOMMEND

Alta R.

Yelp
BED BUGS... Three rooms, in different parts of the hotel... all infested. Reception was absolutely not receptive. The response I received left no doubt that they were already aware of the issue, yet they requested photos to prove my claim. I was given thin waste basket liners to wrap my luggage in, and told I could speak to management in the morning, but was offered no other recourse. Covered in bites, I was forced to find other accommodations at 3 in the morning. Absolutely horrifying experience. I may never sleep again.

Apple N.

Yelp
Very convenient and cheaper hotel all stuff are friendly especially The filipina Ms Gina and Denise they give us all we need and help us the bus is around the corner is very convenient to tour around we go to dole plantation and Pearl Harbor using bus and we went to swap meet to buy our souvenir near Pearl Harbor it's a walking distance only shirt are 6pcs for $20 only and some hair pins flower for $1 each I highly recommend this Royal Grove Hotel very convenient to all restaurants and beach by walking distance only try the musubi restaurant front of the hotel is the popular food in Hawaii I will definitely come back here with my family and will recommend this to all my family and friends thanks.

Richard F.

Yelp
Incredibly disappointed. Spent $250 to stay in a suite. For starters, they would only give us 1 key. And it wasn't a key card, it was a physical key. We had to keep leaving it at the front desk for each other every time we split up. The place is incredible old and outdated. I felt that the room was dirty and the sheets had so many stains. I slept with my clothes on the entire time. However the lady at the front desk was nice. I'll give her that. Also, no visitors?! I get that with covid restrictions they want to be safe, but for 250 a night, we can have our friends come in for a drink? That was incredibly annoying. I don't recommend this place. I'm confused on how they got 4 stars??

Chris M.

Yelp
Denise at front desk is always very helpful when I stay here. Good price, big rooms, little older hotel but I always like it.

Marcela C.

Yelp
I've read a lot of bias reviews about this place. Yes it's cheaper than other hotels near the beach and a lot other food places. And yes this hotel is also really old. I was not expecting a 5-start hotel when I booked this place BUT I was expecting a clean room and receptionist with manners. The room I got was nowhere near the pictures advertised in hotels.com. It felt gross having to be in a room with carpet that looked dusty and burned or cut in some parts. The bathroom made me feel even more gross. There was mold and dust on the air ventilator, water marks in the walls, tell me who puts toilet paper under the sink ? I asked to be moved to a different room and the receptionist said their website was under maintenance BUT not when I checked-in 30 mins prior. I called hotels.com the next day and I was able to speak to the manager on-site of this hotel. I decided to pay $30 a day extra for the rest of my stay because I looked at the room. Apparently for what I had originally paid only gave me a dirty as room with a the tiniest studio space and a outdated everything even the tv was a box tv. The room I upgraded to was literally what I was expecting from the beginning. The last night of my stay, my siblings who were staying at Pacific monarch across the street from this wanted ti hang out late. I stayed 6 days and in all these days not once did a receptionist have an issue with me bringing guests to my room. The last day it was a completely different receptionist by the name Melanie. She questioned my bf when he asked for the key because they're not card keys they're actually keys and we left it at the front to avoid losing it. My bf is AA and Melanie C/W. She gave him a hard time and did not allow my siblings to come in otherwise she was going to charge us extra when they had come to hang out!? We decided to leave and went to their hotel. We had another encounter the same night just later and she called my room talking about my bf needing to remove himself from the hotel as he did not belonged there. He was wearing the exact same clothes just a hat on. She saw us both walk in through the ONLY entrance and he stepped out the room with a hat on because it was raining and she didn't "recognize him". She even threaten to call HPD on him because he asked her if she had a problem with his skin color. It was horrible not an experience I wish on anyone. Her manager excused her behavior by saying "she's not very approachable" then why work as a receptionist?? Stay at your own risk.

Susan M.

Yelp
Rayna was so friendly and accommodating. I needed some coffee filters and she gave me some. Also, she upgraded our room. I would definitley stay here again! It has all the comforts of home and the staff are all friendly allowing the overnighted to feel most welcome!. Susan Martinez from 3-25-4-4.

Yelp
I love Love LOVE this campy, blast-out-of-the-cheesy-past boutique hotel. It is THE place to stay if you want to avoid the black hole money pit that is Waikiki. I have stayed here regularly for over a decade and in that time I have never known them to make modern upgrades and I am glad--it would ruin the retro vibes. This place taught me what to expect around the island in terms of authentic accommodations and easy access to all the action. If you're doing it right, you aren't in your room much more than for showers (room temp water) and sleeping (the beds are old, but if you're tired enough, it won't matter). Like any area on the island, never leave valuables out in the open--whether your car or your room. I have never had anything stolen, but why tempt fate? Bugs are a thing in Hawaii--get used to it. Don't leave food out and it's less of a thing. RGW sprays regularly for these gnat-like bugs. I've seen cockroaches and ants everywhere I've ever stayed on the island, regardless of how much I have spent. There is no parking at the hotel--you can pay to park at one of the neighboring hotels, but it's expensive and congested. My favorite thing is to park my car at the elementary school a few blocks away and walk to the hotel. Its easy to drop people or groceries off at the entrance so the walk home is easier. This part of Waikiki is beautifully congested. There are hotels and high volume apartments. You get an idea of what affordable housing is like in Honolulu and the fact is--this is a city with all kinds, surrounded by water. It's more expensive than LA to vacation here, and the RGW makes it attainable and real. The staff is my favorite part of the whole experience--this group of elderly friends have been holding down the fort for who knows how long and they make you feel less like a tourist and more like a resident, which is what I am going for in Hawaii. The owner used to host a luau (a real one--a potluck! Not the kind you pay for) in his 6th floor residence and how lucky to be considered ohana and receive an invite. Enjoy this blast from Hawaii's glorious retro past. If you're a travel snob, don't stay here; you will harsh all the mellows.

Yelp
This hotel was on the cheaper side ($90/night or so when I visited) but the whole experience was a little uncomfortable. Despite how cheap it was I'm not sure if I would stay again. The hotel only has free WiFi in the lobby. The hotel rooms are very very old. They look like they haven't been remodeled since the 1970s. Very old kitchenettes, very old bathtubs. Beds barely have any sheets on them (very very thin), very old TVs. Very small sinks. At least they have AC units. You're gonna need them! It's very humid in Hawaii. The AC units are very loud though. You also get a lot of road noise from the outside too. I would recommend bringing earplugs. The front staff was nice. I will say the location is pretty good in Waikiki. Literally 5-10 min walk from most things (food, shopping) in Waikiki including the beach.

Yelp
It was a very unfortunate experience. Pros: I agree with the other reviews. The location was fantastic, walking distance to everything. The kitchen in the room was a nice touch as well as the balcony. The pool didn't look crowded which is good compared to the major chain resorts. Cons: The room was a mess after check-in time, dirty dishes in the sink, the beds was unmade. The woman at the front desk told me to come back in 15 mins. I returned and housekeeping was still working on the room. I checked back to the front desk and the lady was so rude she told me to be patient and wait because there were no other rooms she could offer me. I had no time to shower or change before my meeting after traveling all day. There were no blankets in the room, the sheet and a thin bedspread that covered the bed. There was no hot water. The carpets smelt so bad because the water from the AC was leaking in the room. No parking available. I checked out the next morning and went to another hotel in the area.

Yelp
Only one word to describe this hotel: dump. But it is an awesome hotel. The lobby looks like a 1970s post office. The equipment they are using at the front desk is 1970s (maybe 80s). The rooms look like prison cells with tiny kitchens, tiny beds made for 5 year olds with pillows so thin they look like paper. The exterior hallways look like Soviet era block apartments. The rooms have A/C, television from the 80s, phone from the 70s, and everything else you need. And omg they still use old fashion keys with fobs like in Identity. On the bottom floor there is a ghetto liquor store and next to that a ghetto dirty ass chinese take away joint. And for $65/nite while the other hotels are charging $200-$1,500/nite its a steal. Check it was a breeeze. No line and the sweetest old lady working behind the desk who was quite the comedian. If you need a place to crash and dont want to go broke and only care about being in the room to sleep this is the spot for you! Walking distance to everything like 5 mins from the beach and zoo. Save yourself the hassel of parking and Uber from the airport for $20.

Yelp
Royal Grove Waikiki was so charming! Really the pictures don't do it justice, it's great. The location is absolutely perfect, only a 2-minute walk from the beach. They have towels you can check out for free and they hold your key for you at the front, making it very easy to go swimming in the Ocean Nearby without worrying about your stuff. The staff is so kind, personable and funny too. The style of the hotel itself is kind of like 1950s Hawaii. Really open and cute, and kept up well. The lobby and pool are nice hang out areas downstairs. Honestly so much more character and charm than any of the luxury resorts nearby. We got a studio with a kitchen and balcony there and it was much bigger than we imagined! We appreciated the full kitchen and dishes for storing and cooking food. There was also a modern TV with all the channels. The balcony included 2 chairs and a table which was great to sit out on. AND this place is a fantastic value! My only negative (which unfortunately is a somewhat big one) is the big was not great. The pillows were pretty flat and the blanket was very thin. Overall though I probably would stay here again if I was ever in Waikiki.

Yelp
I booked very different 2 rooms here and stayed one week so I have a well rounded idea of what you can expect as a guest. First this place is LOCATED literally 2 blocks away or a 2 minute walk to Waikiki beach and the shopping strip. Within steps around the hotel there are about 8 places to eat and a convenience store. It's close to everything but not so great with for the noise every morning from the busy traffic. So dont expect quiet. The HOTEL CLERKS are VERY nice and accomodating. I had an issue with my first room, which was a studio No kitchen/AC, where the screen door was broken off track and they sent someome within a couple of hours to fix. The same for cleaning, they sent someone within 30 minutes of my request. However the cleaners leave in the late afternoon, just FYI. As for the ROOMS this is an OLD but well kept up hotel. The rooms are kept relatively clean, on a scale of 1-5 I give a 3.5. If they did a better job on the bathrooms it would get a 4.5. I had two rooms and the first studio was clean but the bathroom had old shower curtains and milder behind the sink handles, and the bed sheets and some towels were stained. They addressed it so cool. The basic studio was very small and cramped, but did the job. The second studio with a kichen (no AC) i booked was MUCH cleaner and bigger. However the bathroom had hair and dirt on the walls. If the maids did a deep cleaning even once a week, particularly to the bathrooms, it would be much improved. The AMENETIES was pretty much limited to a pool (which Im shaky about the cleanliness of) and the community area, which is the ONLY place you can pickup their WIFI. There is NO wifi connection or ethernet that I found in the rooms. So bring a mobile hotspot or you may be screwed if you need in-room internet. My tips here are that you dont need the AC, rooms you will be fine if you get a room with good ventilation. Also check the bathroom and linens first and request a clean if they dont meet expectations. It is an old hotel with a very nice staff, reasonably priced for the location, and clean enough to feel comfortable. I dig it.

Yelp
The Royal Grove came highly recommended by friends who love staying at this dated, but very comfortable hotel. We booked months ago, so still got the reduced long stay rate, which is no longer offered. The daily rate is still very reasonable, considering the location (2 blocks from Kuhio/Waikiki beach) and the friendly, welcoming ambience. We stayed for two wonderful weeks. Our room in front was too noisy due to street work, so we gave up the view and gentle breeze for a room in the back overlooking the pool and deck. Overall, the Royal Grove is a quiet place, with family groups and older couples the main guests. But on hula night, the place rocks. Visiting musicians, singers and hula dancers/storytellers present professional level entertainment, complete with hula lessons and sing alongs to well-loved songs. Chairs are set up in the library room, with guests spilling over into the lobby and onto the pool deck. We had a small unit, with kitchenette. We shopped at The Food Pantry, a couple blocks away on Kuhio. We enjoyed poke at the newly opened Maguro Spot, (right on the corner at Kuhio) serving stunningly fresh tuna, salmon and veggie bowls starting at $5US for small size. Around the corner is the pineapple chop shop - chose your fruit, and it's handed back to you peeled and chopped, in a bowl, for $3 to $5US. Parking is premium priced throughout Honolulu. We used The Bus, buying a daily pass for exploring all the way up to the North Shore. The original owners, The Fongs, are still involved with the hotel, but yes, they have hired a property management company to help with the day to day operations. For now, still a wonderful place to stay in beautiful Waikiki.

Yelp
Rooms are nothing the photo. You have to ask to request sheets, towels, etc. there's wallpaper peeling off the walls, cracks in walls, tub, bathroom, that are patched very poorly together. Had a cockroach in the bathroom. Coffee pot didn't work, remote to tv broke, Pick and choose who they ask to wear a mask. Some of the front staff were very nice and a few were not as nice.

Yelp
I cannot say enough good things about this hotel. We visited Hawaii the second week of September and stayed for a full 7 days. I would not recommend anyone stay anywhere but here. The two main factors were location and price, however everything else about our stay was excellent as well. If you're the kind of person who plans to spend most of their vacation on Waikiki Beach and at the hotel itself, you may want to look elsewhere. However, for our purposes, this hotel was perfect. We had a large, clean room with a full kitchenette (oven, stove, microwave, toaster, full fridge, and plenty of cooking and eating utensils) and a balcony with a view of the ocean for under $650 for the week, which is ridiculous compared to other hotels in the area. We easily made breakfast in the mornings and ate on the balcony before heading out for the day. Royal Grove is just a two-block walk from Waikiki Beach, and very close to plenty of shopping, convenience stores, and restaurants. The hotel is also just a couple blocks from a bus stop. To add further convenience, there are beach towels and accessories (floaties, noodles, chairs, etc.) you are able to use for the day and return (at no additional charge). Our sleep quality was good; there is a little bit of noise from the street, but you are in a city so it's to be expected. The air conditioning worked well. The staff was helpful and polite, and other guests were pleasant as well. The only downside might be the lack of WiFi except for in the lobby, but who comes to Hawaii to sit on their computer/phone? The hotel is a little older, but we found it more charming than anything, the pink building reminiscent of old Hawaii. I feel like my review really can't do this hotel justice, as it was exactly what we were looking for and turned out to be such a hidden gem. If we ever visit Honolulu in the future, we will definitely stay again! As an extra tip, if you are renting a vehicle, look for free overnight parking (after 6PM and before 7AM) at the metered streets over near the Honolulu Zoo. We utilized this during our stay, and it was wonderful compared to spending $30+ per night parking in a lot or garage.

Yelp
I experienced very intense cockroaches attacks. Save your money and stay somewhere else! I booked this hotel for 16 nights at the beginning of January (to be honest I was trying to save money as I was staying in Honolulu for over 2wks) and have to check out on the 3rd day as I witnessed more than a couple of dozens of cockroaches everywhere from the kitchen to the bed area to the bathroom. First, they did not even apologize for this horrible situation, and 2nd, they offered me to move to another smaller room but also told us there is no guarantee that the roaches will not be there. They were being beyond unprofessional and the service just simply NOT there! I had to move my hotel again when I got to the 2nd hotel because I carry them with me. I do not want anyone else to experience this...

Yelp
Royal Grove Waikiki is a super outdated hotel that is a 3 minute walking distance from the beach. Location is perfect, building was subpar. Their staff was super friendly and helpful the whole time I stayed there. The pool area was unattractive enough to make me want to stay away from it my whole stay there. Walking past their kitchen to go through the back door was very eye opening. Their pots with food were placed on the floor. The kitchen as a whole seemed dirty and unsanitary. Would give it zero stars if I could, however, the staff was extremely welcoming and nice.

Yelp
There rooms where nasty Mold on the walls they were also small, everything in there is old in our room, the bathroom handle didn't lock water pressure was low, there pool is so small and dirty like eww, so much chlorine that made you itch after awhile the manager was cool with visitors and she was nice but her workers or whoever is there are rude they didn't let anyone besides the people who stay there or else you have to buy a additional fee for a "walk in" which is stupid just don't go there find somewhere is better than this!

Yelp
We have experienced from this hotel was very bad then I can imagine. The room and even whole hotel unexceptionable.recommended do not come here even it for free. That all I can say from my heard to help all tourists around the world.my last thing I want to add is " no parking at all "..,,..

Yelp
Came here for years and knew the great bargains wouldn't last forever. Now a new management company and the Royal Grove I knew is a thing of the past. Used to be fantastic bargain --$78 a night for weekly rate. Now $149 S-Th (before fees, $172 after) and $159 weekends. No more weekly rates. Price almost doubled in one year. Used to pay total when you checked out. Now they charge you whole total at check in. Service declined as well. New a/c units quieter but leaked on bed and left permanent stain on suitcase. Walked out in lanai and cut my foot on broken glass that hadn't beef swept or vacuumed. Spoke to management and they promised to vacuum that afternoon. Glass fragments still there that night. Things I like are the location, kitchenettes, coffee maker, and fridge. Bed so so. Didn't mind when it was $78 a night. At $172 you expect better. No WiFi in rooms but in lobby there is. There also used to be wonderful grocery store a 5 minute walk away to save even more. Now that's gone and only full service grocery is a Safeway you need to take a bus for $5.50 for day pass). Monday nights still a treat with free local Hawaiian music and hula dancing. Two and a half stars, down from 4 1/2 last year.

Yelp
Some things start from a places of trust, others from a lack of it. I prefer trust. I'll trust you until prove otherwise. Typically that's a good decision. RGW is the opposite. Also, the pool is closed.

Yelp
The place itself is alright, no problems for a low-budget, older place . . . . but: 1: we booked through Expedia 2: we called the hotel 2 times to confirm that we would receive a partial refund if we checked out prior to our scheduled 2-week stay and were told 'yes' both times 3: upon checkout (1 week early) we were refused a final statement, told that the hotel would not give us credit, and told to contact Expedia for the credit 4: we contacted Expedia; they again assured us that we should receive the credit upon confirming with the hotel that we had checked out 5: while we were on hold Expedia called the hotel 2 times: they identified themselves as Expedia and requested confirmation that we had checked out 6: the hotel put them on hold and then hung up on them both times 7: I called the hotel and told them I would bring some trouble to them (by contacting Yelp and Expedia) if they did not advise Expedia that day that we had checked out 8: the next day Expedia notified us that our refund would be issued; we have received it Conclude what you will.

Yelp
I stayed for 1 night after booking it off of hotwire, so i was unable to view the hotel before actually buying it but honestly the nastiest hotel i've ever stayed in. Also the housekeeping is only open from 10-3, very inconvenient. The room just felt so dirty and there was a sign in the room that said don't leave valuables in the room???? honestly worth it to just pay more to stay at a nicer hotel. 0/10 would not recommend

Yelp
This place books with an outside service which made no mention of extra fees for additional people in a room. No way to even add them Then when we arrive they want to charge an extra $60 a night for the room. The woman at the desk didn't listen to a word we said and was not interested in anything close to decent customer service. They couldn't even cancel the reservation for us. Clueless and rude. There are polite ways of saying no, but not here. Don't bother.

Yelp
My wife and I have stayed at this family owned Hawaiian hotel a several times over the years. The staff are warm, welcoming and always ready to help the guests. The Monday night musicals and Hawaiian dancing are a delight and should not be missed. We are looking foward to our next visit.

Yelp
I recently went to Hawaii with a friend (a vacation without my kid....the guilt!). We both didn't care about a lavish hotel. We need a clean place that was relatively inexpensive. It was a place to put our stuff away, shower and crash after a day of burning under the HI sun. Looking at reviews on Yelp brought me to Royal Grove Hotel. The Room: We were given an actual key (not a keycard). We got a basic room that was clean with two twin beds for a mere $70/night. It had a mini-fridge. It was cleaned every morning. There was an a/c unit that worked very well. TV with cable channels. No toiletries except two bars of soap so bring/buy shampoo & conditioner. There are a bazillion ABC stores in the neighborhood. They have other rooms that have kitchenettes with pots/pans/plates/the whole shebang. 2 blocks away from Waikiki beach. You can't beat the location!!!! Ambiance: It's dated but that's what gives it charm. It's mostly occupied with retired folks. No families, no parties in the rooms. Service was friendly. Parking: There is no parking lot but just a mere 3 blocks away is a parking lot that costs $20/day. Conclusion: I'm definitely coming back if I want to have a no frills place to stay.

Yelp
Absolutely disgusting! Mold on walls, TV broken, can't leave to get food, RUDE CUSTOMER SERVICE !!!!!!! Never coming back to this hotel again. waste of money. At LEAST they gave me a refund. but don't waste your money staying here. you will be very disappointed.

Roxanne S.

Yelp
We stayed here on our vacation in September. The price we got was amazing for the week. The staff here was so friendly and nice. I prefer staying at smaller hotels. Only thing is parking but it was like that at all the resorts. We got our exercise in by walking a lot but really it wasn't that far from anything. We will definitely be back.

Yelp
Stayed here for a week with family. The location is great - when you walk out the front door you can see the ocean down the road - but their policies make recommending it difficult. We traveled with a group of 7, all arriving from different places. My party was the first to arrive at 10AM - they said the room was not ready (totally fine) and to come back at 3PM. At 3PM we returned and were told we couldn't check in until the person who booked it physically called the hotel and confirmed our identity, even though we had the confirmation email and all of the booking information through AirBnB and our names were on the reservation. But because we weren't the "primary booker" we couldn't check in for another few hours, nor could we change or shower. Also the place where they offered to store our bags was behind the counter in plain sight with no security - the front desk attendant would disappear for long spans of time leaving the bags unattended - doesn't exactly make us feel safe. Overall, too complicated and not customer friendly and would not recommend.

Yelp
A great way to experience old Hawaii with all the modern amenities. The staff is amazing, even in the middle of the night. It's a great stay!
