Best Beignets in New Orleans

"Royal House plays to its strengths: it's within walking distance of Bourbon Street (and bad decisions), and accordingly, serves as an ideal jumping off point for your raucous night-to-come. Head in around 5 p.m. for a platter of fresh oysters and a hard drink, and don't forget the crispy, crunchy, doughy beignets: those savory, tasty bad boys (God bless fried redfish and beurre blanc) will play an important role in lining your stomach." - Paul Oswell, Andrew Parks

Google
Best baked oyster ever!!! My redfish meal was excellent as well. I wish we found this place sooner but will definitely be back next time we are in NOLA. My server was the best I forgot her name and I lost the receipt I wrote it down on but best server I ever had encountered.

Susan Arndt

Google
We went to Royal House for dinner and had an amazing dinning. Started with Chargrilled Oysters topped with Parmesan butter cheese amazing! Then had Grilled with a butter garlic sauce, served with garlic French Fries it was a tad salty but delicious. Also had Blackened Redfish Served with vegetables and cajun jambalaya. We highly recommend going!

Google
Had two dozen oysters with a friend here and they were delicious! We sat at the counter and they shucked them right there in front of us. Service was outstanding! Seriously, the wait staff here is way above par. Also had a couple of cocktails (pictured) and The shrimp po-boy and shrimp and grits entrees. I was there on the last Sunday of Mardi Gras and the place was pretty packed. However, we were able to find two seats right at the counter, no problem. The restaurant is right in the French quarter close to Bourbon Street and there was plenty of people watching to be had.

Google
I was in this wonderful place two and a half months ago and had dinner on the balcony from where you have a wonderful view of this vibrant city. The food was excellent, Cajun style. NOLA and this beautiful place remained in my heart and I want to come back. I am sorry for the tragic events at the beginning of the year, for the innocent victims and for their families!

Google
Server was great. Food was fine. Not amazing. Ordered the bowl of gumbo. Good flavor in the roux but No chicken in it whatsoever and Way too expensive. 17.50 most places in the quarter have a cup for like 8 and A bowl for like 11. Husband had blackened chicken jambalaya which was also fine but also way overpriced. Wouldn’t recommend it. Plenty of other places with better options and less expensive.

Google
Best oyster poboy in French quarter - juicy, crunchie, great French bread, comfortable seating and very interesting characters / staff working here! ⭐️⭐️⭐️🤩⭐️✨🌟💫

Google
saw the balcony seating sign and wanted to give it a try for dinner. the host & hostess were a pleasure and the waitress was nice but frankly forgot about us once our food was delivered. the balcony seating is only for a table of 1-2. we ordered the “taste of new orleans” and it did not disappoint!! while there we got to enjoy two parades and a gifted musician!

Babes N Bladez

Google
This place came highly recommended, we decided to check it out and it did not disappoint fresh seafood, all nice and tasty and fresh! We had the crab claws for an appetizer. We had a half dozen of the charbroil oysters and then we had the taste of New Orleans with red beans, étouffée and jambalaya and also the BLT oyster Poboy. All the food was really delicious, highly recommended and just off Bourbon Street by a block! They even sucked the oysters, right there at the bar !

Yelp
2/19 Royal Oyster House -Atmosphere: again normal Oyster bar with nice bartender nothing really out of the norm here -Char Grilled Oysters Half Dozen --this dish is honestly just great everywhere I think but I preferred the one at other places tbh but this is still great -Omelet --actually probably the best of the breakfast foods I've had so far in NOLA was cooked perfectly and filled with crawfish Overall: Solid place and would recommend as a breakfast for sure wasn't too crowded either so no reservations required if youre going for the oysters tho there's better elsewhere *B*

Yelp
Amazing food with great ambiance -- if you are looking for a place to grab dinner in NOLA that is a bit more laid back with a pleasant dining experience, this is the place to go! We got the charbroiled oysters and they were to die for. For entrees, we got the crawfish etouffee which was flavorful and light. The ribeye was cooked to order, well seasoned and the garlic fries were flavorful on its own. I highly recommend swinging by Royal House Oyster Bar for a pleasant dinner -- it will leave a lasting impression and be a great experience.

Yelp
What a wonderful find in the French Quarter. We were able to sit in an open doorway and listen to live music outside while dining. Our server was great! She was friendly and attentive. She gave me a recommendation on what to order ... the French Toast and oooohh was it good! My husband had the Shrimp Po Boy and needed two hands (and a knife and fork) to eat it. Our server also recommended some things to do in the area. We love to hear from the locals :) We definitely recommend!

Yelp
We checked in on this place early to ask about dinner plans around 2 and the front attendant Greg told us when to come back as a party of 7. He was right - we came back and were seated right away and had friendly service, During dinner it POURED but we were safe inside. Many people popped out to the balcony to check out the downpour. The food was great - especially the oysters,

Yelp
This meal was one of the best I had while In New Orleans. Dined by myself and all the staff were kind and attentive. I got the bourbon shrimp and grits, with a side of slaw, and it was incredible and a generous portion. Sitting outside, I enjoyed the spring weather while some live music played across the street.

Yelp
We enjoyed it. It's been a few years since we last visited NOLA. But when we do, we always eat at Royal House. As always, we started out by sharing some Chargrilled Oysters. They were good. 4/5. I had a cup of Gumbo as my entree. It was good. 4/5. Not seen on the menu, I asked about a small side salad. Our server, Colleen said she could do that. Thank you Colleen. 5/5. My wife had Seafood Pescatore and subbed out the marinara sauce for scamp sauce. I tried it. It was amazing! Lots of seafood in it as well. 5/5. Our server is usually Tina but she either wasn't on tonight or no longer works here. Colleen did fine. Thanks Royal House.

Yelp
I just wanna say whenever you visit New Orleans you must go here because the ambience and the service is amazing as well as the food and the drinks. The oysters Rockefeller is a must and then anything they recommend is also good. Treat yourself to a good time by eating here every time you come to New Orleans.

Yelp
Given its location on the corner of St. Louis and Royal with its second-floor balcony views and ground-level oyster bars and lively staff, you would think this would be a decent dining experience. Unfortunately, the Royal House was very disappointing. Overpriced, no iced coffee, the coffee they had was unremarkable and didn't perk me up, and breakfast that offered fairly ho-hum bacon and a biscuit that was chewy, the experience was a let down. Granted, it caters to a more touristy crowd, so its more about the visual of a creole oyster house without the quality. The cuisine was very heavy on the gluten end, so there was very little for my wife, who is celiac. I didn't have any oysters so I can't vouch for how that was from others. But price-wise, I didn't think the experience was worth the visit. And I just had breakfast.

Yelp
With this spot being in a heavily trafficked area, there is a reason they had two people out front trying to pull people in. I know, it was a clear sign but the place we wanted to d a block away had a long line and we had to get back to a conference. They had poboys but not a muffelata. Shrimp poboy had shrimp that were not well cooked and almost mushy. The gumbo was fairly good but a cup was $12- much more expensive than surrounding places. Was not terrible but I would not return
google avatar

Dan M.

Yelp
This was a two-story establishment with wide-open windows and a bar upstairs. I believe there was also a bar downstairs too. The menu provided traditional Cajun and creole dishes. The service was okay. It took some time for us to get the check even though there was hardly anybody there. For an entrée, I had the creole red beans and rice ($22). It also contained grilled andouille sausage. The char on the sausage provided a nice flavor to it. The red beans rice was comforting and tasty. It was a classic dish done right and was very satisfying. I also tried the gumbo and jambalaya. Both were not bad, but I definitely preferred the red beans and rice at this spot. Will I go back? I believe so.

Yelp
I swung by on a Thursday night to grab a quick dinner by myself. I chose to sit at the bar upstairs for a quieter experience but if you're looking for a livelier atmosphere, would recommend sitting downstairs instead. I ordered half a dozen oysters on the half shell, which were fresh, plump, and scrumptious! The crab cakes, on the other hand, were a bit overpriced for what you get in my opinion but maybe I'm a bit spoiled from all the crab cakes I've had in Maryland. However, I will admit that the sauce was delicious and jam-packed with rich crawfish flavor. The service was pretty fast and the bartender was friendly. Definitely worth paying a visit if you're in the area!

Yelp
The Royal House was amazinggg. The gumbo, the crab claw, the overall experience. Not to mention the phenomenal service from Blake, Brene and the lovely Bartender. One of the Bloody Mary's I've ever had. The garnish is soaked in perfection. Top Tier across the board!
google avatar

Yelp
I am sorry to say, but the food was not good here. There was four of us and none of us would go back. I am giving three stars because our waitress was awesome. She really deserves five stars.
google avatar

Marian H.

Yelp
The server was excellent. But the food wasn't. My sister was not happy with the seafood order. She had boiled shrimp, corn & sausage. She sent it back because it wasn't spicy as she ordered. They brought it out again but it still wasn't to her liking. She was not happy at all. I don't think we'll be back here again.
google avatar

Yelp
Fresh and delicious oysters. Service was usual for this area but efficient. Ambience was great with great balcony views.
google avatar

Crystal T.

Yelp
The food, service, and atmosphere was outstanding! We had blue crab claws that were emerged in an amazing sauce. The bread that came with the dishes was perfect dipped in that sauce! The chargrilled oysters beat any oyster I've had anywhere!! Then our waitress was so attentive and friendly! We will be going back to New Orleans to eat here.
google avatar

Yelp
First, the highlights were the raw oysters that were some of the best that I had during my four-day stay in New Orleans. The vodka that was infused in pickled veggies was amazing in the Bloody Mary. The service was very attentive. The areas of improvement were the shrimp po-boy, which was not very flavorful, and the breading, which was overwhelming to the shrimp. The fries were only warm, but they were crisp. The ambiance was quaint, but with this came a leaking air vent that kept dropping water on one of my dinner mates.
google avatar

Joanne L.

Yelp
My friend and I went to try out this place because we thought it would be a great place to try oysters. It was pretty busy when we went, 20 min wait for the two of us. Service-wise, this place was lacking. We waited pretty long to order, get our orders, and even longer to get our checks. In the end, I had to go up to one of the staff to give my card to pay. It was a bit disappointing, but the server was nice when he first sat us down. The food was decent but nothing mind-blowing. Oysters were nice to try but really over-buttered and salty. I ordered the New Orleans sampler which came with three dishes to try (I chose jambalaya, gumbo, and etouffee). Although I liked the jambalaya and gumbo, the portions for this were terribly small- only a few bites of each dish. My friend enjoyed her Baked Gulf Shrimp Tortellini dish, though. Overall, would not necessarily recommend this place but the location is nice as you can listen to the street show music from the balconies, nicely located in the FQ.

Yelp
Great food & fun, friendly service in the perfect French Quarter setting! The grilled oysters are incredible!
google avatar

Danielle N.

Yelp
Got the oysters and shrimp poboy. Kind of disappointing. Food was just alright. Poboy not great. There are definitely better oyster spots in town.
google avatar

Patrick M.

Yelp
I arrived later in the day with my partner that works late and found this gem. The servers are super friendly and attentive. We decided to have an oyster overhaul and ate 24 between us, not much in retrospect. The alligator was the best I ever had ever. Don't listen to the reviews of the drunkards looking for their drinks 45 seconds later. Will return.
google avatar

Nelly J.

Yelp
This was one of my favorite meals in Nola. Full disclosure, I was definitely intoxicated. That said.... We ordered the jambalaya and crawfish etoufee and shared it. Both dishes were so flavorful. Rice was cooked perfectly and still a little moist. The jamba had a nice kick to it but not too spicy to where you can't enjoy the flavor of the rice. We sat at the bar and service was fast and friendly. Will definitely come back!!
google avatar

Greg T.

Yelp
Third time here. The oysters are still big and plump. Great food. The staff was the best. So accommodating.
google avatar

Danielle A.

Yelp
Impeccable service, delicious food and a really cute spot to grab some food. Had the chargrilled oysters, a cup of gumbo and the ravioli and it was all amazing! I forgot our servers name but she was fantastic and when I got grease on my shirt she got me a cup of club soda so I could clean it off. Which was really kind of her. I'd definitely come back and I've been on an oyster binge during my trip and these might be my faves.
google avatar

Dana P.

Yelp
Kristin the bartender was amazing when we stopped in for just a cocktail while walking around. The cooked oysters looked amazing!
google avatar

Daniel M.

Yelp
I came here for crawfish étouffée as it was recommended and not fried. Although the dish was done well it was in no way satisfying. The dish it came on was huge and appeared to be a good presentation, but the portion was more of a child's portion. For $27 plus tax and tip I was sorely disappointed. I left the establishment almost as hungry as I arrived.
google avatar

Lori M.

Yelp
Big beautiful oysters on the half shell! Perfect first stop in the French Quarter. Awesome gumbo and Oyster tostados.
google avatar

Gary L.

Yelp
The perfect place for a taster of New Orleans! Outstanding Po Boy. I had the oyster PB. Darn good, maybe even the best I have ever had. Ambiance and service was outstanding and quick. Bartender and host were personable, witty and knowledgeable of not only the area but made suggestions. Recommend this fine place for everyone!
google avatar

Melinda E.

Yelp
The food was decent . It's a convenient location and I love the partial outside seating . Anywhere in New Orleans you're going to get great service .
google avatar

John W.

Yelp
Love this place. Everything from the drinks to the entrees was amazing. Everyone in our group of 6 was more than satisfied with their meal. The service was top notch. We were upstairs and had the bartender as our server and she was fantastic. The drinks were all on point and the entrees came out at exactly the right time. Everything was cooked to perfection. Their crawfish and crab ravioli might be my favorite dish in all of NOLA.

Yelp
6 years ago, a friend and I stumbled across this place after a long day of exploring and had the best chargrilled oysters. And for the life of me, i couldn't remember the name of the restaurant, just the big mirror behind the bar. Well, I'm back and Royal House is stamped in my book. It was just as good as the first time i had it. I came strictly for the chargrilled oysters. The oysters are so good and comes with this bread. Idk what is on that bread but whew delish! I also tried a new dish, crab cawls. Now i didnt think anything could top the oysters but this is a close second. The claws are cracked and doused in this creamy sauce that is so good an uncivilized person would lick the plate lol. The claws also comes with three pieces of bread. So this is not a time to be worried about carbs.

Yelp
Quick service, great food, coupon for a free appetizer from the hotel... Prices were a bit higher than I'm used to and there's a surcharge for credit cards, no view, but comfortable.
google avatar

Yelp
Chelsea was our waitress. She was very polite and provided good service. The atmosphere was nice. A/C with ceiling fans to escape the NOLA heat. They are located on Royal Street so there were musicians outside playing really good jazz music. Their presence really added to the atmosphere. The food was good. We had gumbo, shrimp and grits and crab claw dish with toast. All of the food was good. We enjoyed it. Portions were good. They were a little pricey for my taste. The kids got the shrimp and grits and it was around $25. I've never had grits of any kind worth $25 but hey. They were tasty. There's an upstairs area as well as the main floor where you enter. I did have a bit of buyers remorse on the way out of the restaurant. I saw another customer with the fish platter I contemplated and the portion was really what I was looking for! UPDATE: We contemplated going back the next day but wanted to be sure to try more spots!
google avatar

Allie T.

Yelp
I've never had oysters y'all and these were delish! Definitely put all the fixins on! We got the "On the Half Shell" and they were awesome. The blue crab legs and French onion soup were also incredible, I definitely think this place deserves a higher review score than it has! Service was great; it's really cute and quaint inside. Would absolutely go back!
google avatar

Yelp
Service (3/5): We were told we had to wait 30 minutes for a table for 6 of us. When we were led upstairs, the whole floor was basically empty... Our waiter was overwhelmed with the few tables despite having multiple staff members run the floor. So our service was a bit slow. Ambiance (5/5): For smaller parties of 2, you can be seated on the balcony over looking the street! The inside was clean and open. The downstairs was very busy and you can also be seated at the bar. Food: Spinach and artichoke dip (4/5): The homemade (I think!) were fresh off the fryer (some chips were cooked overlapping). The dip was flavorful but a bit difficult to dip with the cheese being a huge homogenous piece. Ratio of chips wasn't enough for the amount of dip. Oysters (5/5): These oysters were HUGE and also fresh. They are shucked but the muscles were not cut. No sand in the bites. We ended up ordering more upon finishing!

Yelp
We were looking for awesome places for dinners in New Orleans and this one was kind of a crap shoot - I couldn't find a ton of info on it or any real details of the food. We figured that we should go for it. OMG was this place awesome, First of all the service was insanely good. I only see this kind of service in the movies but this was what we got. Charla, our server, was 100% awesome and did everything she could to take care of us. Even the other servers who weren't taking care of us stopped by to say hi. These folks are amazing. Then the drinks came . 100% perfect. Then the food came....... Oh my the food was good. amazing. The gumbo was insane and the crawfish etoufee was the best I've ever had. Seriously, the crawfish etoufee was stellar. I'd eat it with a flip-flop. That good. Really. I'd give this place 5 stars just for that but recombination of the food, the service, and the ambience was spectacular. This is totally a 5 star establishment. Fantastic. Ask for Charla. She is a gem.
google avatar

Jennie K.

Yelp
Overall enjoyed the food! The oysters were a bit too salty for me and the toast was quite creamy (wish it had an acidic flavor to balance it), but everything was cooked well. The service was super fast and we liked our server! The restaurant has a balcony but we sat indoors upstairs which was quiet and nice.

Yelp
Came as a walk in on a weds night walk walking around looking for food. Was not overly busy and was able to snag a table on the 2nd floor facing the street. Good was good but not great. The chargrilled oysters were fantastic but slightly oily. Had the jambalaya, which was just okay. The seating on the second floor balcony are slanted at a weird angle. Feels like you're going to fall off the balcony.
google avatar

Ken C.

Yelp
A half-dozen excellent, fresh, and fatty oysters cost $16--slightly pricey, but worth it, especially if you're from a big city. The staff were very friendly, and the place was clean and spacious. It had a classy wooden bar table with L shaped street view. The strong A/C mixed with fresh air made the atmosphere really pleasant. There are always some cuties hung out with there buddies : )
google avatar

Melanie D.

Yelp
so we had Royal House on our list of things to do in NOLA and the food is pretty good here. The oyster toskada was really delicious. According to my friend Stacee I had the French onion soup and was pleasantly surprised was it it definitely had a little bit more mozzarella than I wanted but nonetheless it was the right portion just to keep me leveled out for lunch. The drinks unfortunately weren't anything special, hours were a little bit water down and didn't really hit the nail on the head. I saw them pumping out bloody Mary's, which 80% of the restaurant was ordering so maybe that was the drink to order Nonetheless, the service was outstanding, and we had the cutest waitress who was so sweet and attentive towards us

Yelp
Fantastic! Romantic lighting (outside balcony), cozy restaurant, great service and delicious food! Highly reccomend!

Yelp
Fried Chicken Club. Thats it, that's a review. It was AMAZING! The Fried oysters and the spinach artichoke dip was also great. Nice location even so close to Bourbon it has a nice feel, not too loud. Our server, Jada, was also great. Definitely recommend!
google avatar

Jimmy U.

Yelp
Came here for Oysters. Looked promising from the photos. Took over an hour and 15 minutes for 12 Oysters. The place was almost empty. They said they didn't have anyone to shuck Oysters, on a Sunday night. Wouldn't recommend unless you are patient and not that hungry and have a lot of time. They took 40 minutes to bring out the fried fish platter because they felt bad about the oysters taking long. Then when the oysters came they felt rushed and slightly burned and didn't taste that good. Also the ceiling drips condensation water onto tables where your food goes. Gross.
google avatar

Vanessa L.

Yelp
We got the crawfish & crabmeat ravioli, chargrilled oysters and blackened chicken jambalaya. My favorite was the ravioli. It came with a creamy tomato sauce with melted cheese. So delicious and full of flavor. Don't forget to check in for a free appetizer! We got the crawfish toast which we enjoyed.
google avatar

Yelp
It was my boyfriend's first time in NOLA and so naturally I had to bring him to the Royal House. His mind was blown. He enjoyed the "Taste of New Orleans," which means he got to sample their gumbo, crawfish étouffée, and red beans & rice. To this day when he tells someone about New Orleans he mentions the music AND the "Taste of New Orleans". That man would easily travel through monsoon season if he had to, just to eat here again. Note : I wrote the above after our April 2024 visit to New Orleans. We came back again 6 months later and brought friends. The boyfriend, now fiance, insisted we eat at the Royal House again. I quickly obliged. It was just as terrific as it was back in April. Special shoutout to Darius! He made us feel genuinely welcome, and every dish recommendation was a winner!

Yelp
Stopped by for an oyster snack. It was pretty empty in the afternoon, but the oysters were super fresh, yummy, and huge. Service was good too, our server was very nice and the food came out quickly.

Yelp
Our first time in NOLA in the French Quarter. Walking by my wife and I stopped in at the Royal House. We took a seat at the end of the bar and was greeted nicely by a person I mistaken for the bartender. He took our drink order and another attendant took our food order. Our drinks took a little while because the bartenders worked at the other end of the bar. The attendant that greeted us was shucking oysters. We ordered a 1/2 dz BBQ oysters for starters that were good but seemed baked. My wife had the blackened red fish dinner that was actually very good and a substantial order. I had a bowl of chicken and sausage gumbo that was served in a large wide bowl and very little gumbo. No bread or crackers. It was a big disappointment for my first bowl of gumbo in NO. Not much meat in it either. When I got the bill, I was charged $17.50 for that small skimpy bowl of gumbo. Just to let you know, the next day at the Napoleon House Restaurant in the French Quarter, I purchased a bowl of seafood gumbo, equal amount, more substantial, for $12.00, with crusted bread and butter. I guess I won't be going back for gumbo to the Royal House.
google avatar

Yelp
We saw this place as we were walking around the block looking for lunch. After 3 failed attempts to other restaurants we ended happily here. We got the Craw legs appetizer, sorry it didn't make it to the picture . Next, the tortellini and ravioli. Everything came out with a good timing. It looks just like a regular pasta but rest assured it is amazing!!! I am so picky with pasta since my mom makes the best one BUT here they hit the spot . Sadly no dessert because it was so fulfilling. Server was ok, nothing special. On a really hot day this spot was amazing with wide open windows, fans. Definitely will be back!

Yelp
The number of times I have walked pass this joint and not gone in, I can't tell you. But this was my first time coming in here and it won't be the last. The Doctor and I did multiple visits here. The initial visit was due to the fact that we couldn't get into the Carousel Lounge at the Monteleone. I was salty AF, but The Royal House got me back on the path of inner peace. We stopped in for fresh oysters and they did not disappoint. Not only were they large, but they were creamy and they were wonderful. The chargrilled oysters (Louisiana oysters, fresh shucked, topped with Parmesan butter cheese filling) were crazy buttery and good too! Washed down with bubbles, it was a perfect meal. Second visit we got the Chicken And Andouille Gumbo (traditional New Orleans-style with chicken, andouille sausage and white rice), Crawfish Toast (Louisiana crawfish tails, cajun seasoning, tomato, parmesan, mozzarella, green onion) and the Royal House Burger. Crawfish Toast was a good appetizer, not something I would have thought of, but it worked for me. The burger was nice and juicy and made for a good lunch...all was good. We sat at a table in the open French doors, which was great as I love watching people and cars go by. Tarik was so much fun and such a great server. The Doctor and I had a great time there and will definitely be back the next time we are in Nawleans.
