Royal Melbourne Golf Club

What an amazing opportunity, to play at RM for the first time 2 months before the Open is held. Played the West course - it's BIG, but definitely playable. The bunkers are clean, with high lips - if you're not good at bunker play, you need to avoid or you will struggle! Greens are fast. Lots of GUR (not surprising while they get the course ready). Clubhouse is amazing - great mix of old and new. Food is fantastic - as are all the staff. Superb pro shop with loads of women's wear. A day to remember!

Such an impressive golf course from the moment you drive into the driveway past the hedges right until you drive back out again. Exceptional experience from the amazing staff, pro shop, practice facilities, bar and the golf course is absolutely outstanding. Definitely a day I'll cherish!

I visited RMGC on Day 1 of the 2025 Australian Open. The only information I was able to find about course access prior to attending was the following: “You can access the course through Sandy Golf Links via Gate 1 on Reserve Rd.” Good to know. More to the point, you could ONLY access the course through this entry point (and one other a long way further down this street). So if you foolishly thought you might be dropped off on Cheltenham Road on the north-west corner of the RMGC course and walk the short distance along to the main entrance, you’d be sadly mistaken (like me and countless others). No! You’d instead have to walk all the way back to Bluff Road (away from the entrance), then north to Tulip Street (even further away!) then take a long walk east to Reserve Road and then and back south to get to the entrance. In other words, you’d have to virtually circumnavigate the entire Sandringham Golf Links course! It’s an entirely unnecessary walk of over 2.5 km! And even then, there was another significant hike before you even got to set foot on the RMGC site where the tournament was being held. The only conceivable purpose of this arrangement was to force patrons to pass through an area where there are lots of commercial outlets trying to get you to spend your money. Reminds me of IKEA stores, where you seem to walk through every single section before you can escape! If that was the strategy, fine. But at least have the good sense to warn patrons that there is only a single entrance. I won’t be coming back.

What a set up, visited for the Australian Open, the course was in pristine condition & the players were kept on their toes with pin placements, etc. Iconic location.

Rated australias best for a reason... great spot for the australian open and hosted excellently...

Royal Melbourne Golf Course, It was a while ago that I had the awesome opportunity to play Australia's Number 1 golf course as a guest of a Royal Melbourne golf club member. Everything about Royal Melbourne Golf Club is perfect 👌, from front house service at proshop to experience of the beautiful West Course. Everyone was very friendly and helpful, which enhanced the experience. The only way to get on and play is to be an invited guest of a member. If you have the opportunity, take it with both hands. This is a bucket list golf course to experience.

Blown away by how awesome this place is. It is truly awesome. Facilities, golf course, proshop, hospitality, parking, people - ALL very highly rated. If you are lucky enough to play here (I played the West Course - ranked #7 in the world), then stop for a second, look around, and take it all in. Relish it. Savour it. Often rated as the best course in Australia - this is a very private expensive club for the gentry of Melbourne in the famed Sandbelt area of Melbourne. Has two 18 hole courses - East and West spread over four sections of land. For tournaments only one main section is used - making up the Composite Course. The West Course is definitely superior, has most of the holes of the composite layout and the front nine of the West has a stretch of five or six holes that are world class. Noted for its large bunkers and fast greens it is a masterwork of noted course design legend Dr Alistair McKenzie. Interstate or overseas players may be able to get a round with a letter of introduction from their club - sent well ahead of time. The course is well-treed but maintains something of a links feel as it is built on ancient sand-dunes that are now well inland. I was a caddy at Royal Melbourne for four years but actually rate Kingston Heath and Barnbougle Dunes as better course designs overall (and The Dunes at Rye remains my favourite all time course).
