The 7 Best Hostels in Edinburgh (Updated 2025)

"This laid-back, classic backpacker joint has chill common areas, a small library, regular social events (pub crawls, Scottish dancing lessons), free coffee and tea, and a tour desk for day trips. There’s a simple breakfast for £3 and a handy perk of free travel adapters; beds are simple wooden bunks but include individual reading lights, outlets, and lockers (no curtains). Bathrooms can be a bit cramped but showers have good water pressure and everything is kept clean, so overall it feels homey and comfortable." - Matthew Kepnes

Everything was great! This is the best hostel I've stayed at by far!! The people are so nice, the location is exquisite and the service is phenomenal. We could pick up our keys in the middle of the night, and we could leave our luggage for a longer period then the checkout time. Everything is cleaned daily. The room is clean and not dusty, the bathrooms are also very clean. The showers are fine and clean. If you need anything you can ask the volunteers and they also assemble great activities. I would 100% go back if I'm staying in Edinburgh again, so I recommend it dearly!!!

Edimburg is a lovely city. My friend and I stayed for 2 nights in the Little Miss female dorm. The place is cozy, the staff was nice and helpful, and the showers and toilets were clean. The location is great, it's very close to the city center. Would recomend

YES! Best backpackers I’ve ever stayed at. Cosy and beautiful, free towels and tea/coffee and lots of amenities - can bring your own groceries and cook. Great playlist (love some jazz in the morning with a coffee by the window). Dead centre location. Staff are divine. Top bunks even have full chargers to themselves and you can control the heating from the radiator within the room, so no suffering from being too hot/cold! Also I felt really safe as a woman travelling solo. But mostly, the place was just so cute and romantic with its theme - you’ll particularly love it if you’re a Harry Potter lover like me 😊 Bloody book it!

My friend and I had the most amazing time in Royal Mike Backpackers. It has been the best hostel experience I’ve had so far. The staff were super kind and welcoming. I love that they have different fun things for the travelers, we even did Friendship Beacelets!

A wonderful hostel! One of the best I've ever stayed in. The staff were incredibly helpful, the place was pretty social and full of friendly people, the location is insanely good, and the overall vibe was cozy and comfortable. I'll definitely stay here if/when I come back to Edinburgh, couldn't recommend highly enough!

A warm, simple, cozy hostel in the best location possible. Highly recommend for anyone coming in solo (my wife and I were together, not ideal for hostels but made it work) the staff is friendly, and accomodations comfortable, you can tell lots of love put into this place. Only complain is there wasnt a dedicated mens restroom - I had to use the all gender one, and it got kind of cramped in there in the morning. I love that they are inclusive with it though.

Very helpful staff and clean public areas. I left my jacket in the room and they kindly kept it for days. The room by the street was not that quiet but still manageable. Perfect location right on the royal mile.

I stayed here for my first ever solo trip away and loved it. Everything was explained to me prior in an email before arriving and the girl at the desk (I didn't catch her name unfortunately) explained it again in detail. 5 stars for service because as I was leaving the room I found that the door wasn't locking, I reported it to the desk (at 7pm) and they came and looked at it with me, apologised profusely and when I returned later the door was fixed. Super fast and made me feel more secure that they take their security seriously! The lockers are big enough for a backpack (I was travelling with a large non-camping bag) but that was a bit of a squeeze. The rooms were clean (and are cleaned daily as I walked in on them cleaning ours both days I stayed, sorry for any inconvenience!) and so are the toilets and showers. Plug sockets and small light are right next to your bed as well so no need to go for a socket hunt. Would recommend to anyone visiting as the location is fantastic (bare in mind that because of the location the noise from the street is loud at night, but reception offer earplugs). If I had to leave a suggestion is to just update your automatic emails, as I had planned on attending your paint and sip session on a Saturday night and was told that you don't host that anymore, but was kindly offered some supplies to paint with if I wished.
