The 7 Best Hostels in Edinburgh (Updated 2025)

"This laid-back, classic backpacker joint has chill common areas, a small library, regular social events (pub crawls, Scottish dancing lessons), free coffee and tea, and a tour desk for day trips. There’s a simple breakfast for £3 and a handy perk of free travel adapters; beds are simple wooden bunks but include individual reading lights, outlets, and lockers (no curtains). Bathrooms can be a bit cramped but showers have good water pressure and everything is kept clean, so overall it feels homey and comfortable." - Matthew Kepnes

A wonderful hostel! One of the best I've ever stayed in. The staff were incredibly helpful, the place was pretty social and full of friendly people, the location is insanely good, and the overall vibe was cozy and comfortable. I'll definitely stay here if/when I come back to Edinburgh, couldn't recommend highly enough!

I stayed for 3 nights in the Little Miss 10-bed female dorm last April. The place is super cozy, and both the staff and volunteers were incredibly welcoming and helpful. The showers, toilets, and kitchen were all very clean. There's also a locker right next to your bed, which is really convenient. I absolutely recommend this place without hesitation and will definitely come back next time I'm in Edinburgh!

A warm, simple, cozy hostel in the best location possible. Highly recommend for anyone coming in solo (my wife and I were together, not ideal for hostels but made it work) the staff is friendly, and accomodations comfortable, you can tell lots of love put into this place. Only complain is there wasnt a dedicated mens restroom - I had to use the all gender one, and it got kind of cramped in there in the morning. I love that they are inclusive with it though.

I stayed here for my first ever solo trip away and loved it. Everything was explained to me prior in an email before arriving and the girl at the desk (I didn't catch her name unfortunately) explained it again in detail. 5 stars for service because as I was leaving the room I found that the door wasn't locking, I reported it to the desk (at 7pm) and they came and looked at it with me, apologised profusely and when I returned later the door was fixed. Super fast and made me feel more secure that they take their security seriously! The lockers are big enough for a backpack (I was travelling with a large non-camping bag) but that was a bit of a squeeze. The rooms were clean (and are cleaned daily as I walked in on them cleaning ours both days I stayed, sorry for any inconvenience!) and so are the toilets and showers. Plug sockets and small light are right next to your bed as well so no need to go for a socket hunt. Would recommend to anyone visiting as the location is fantastic (bare in mind that because of the location the noise from the street is loud at night, but reception offer earplugs). If I had to leave a suggestion is to just update your automatic emails, as I had planned on attending your paint and sip session on a Saturday night and was told that you don't host that anymore, but was kindly offered some supplies to paint with if I wished.

Very chill vibes and friendly staff and guests, which made me feel very safe during my stay. The location is amazing as well for the price, very close to many attractions, including the National Gallery and Edinburgh Castle. It's also very close to the airport bus and Waverly train station. I'd definitely stay here if I'm visiting Edinburgh again and the price is good enough.

Very difficult to find. Look for the Indian restaurant and climb up the stairs. If you have a disability it will not be easy to access because of the stairs. Really centrally located to the city centre and tourist attractions. Train and bus stations are nearby.

A lovely little place of comfort along the busy Royal Mile, staff are really friendly and everyone is respectful of each other. Can be noisy at night especially around fringe time but earplugs are provided!

Stayed for 2 nights in their Little Miss all female room. The hostel is very small and quaint with only a couple other rooms. No noise complaints from the other guests, but be aware that there are a couple loud bars next to the hostel. Perfect location on the royal mile, close to everything in the city. Hairdryers, towels, and straighteners available, but no soaps or body washes. Women only and mixed gender toilets and showers which were cleaned every day. You get a decent sized locker next to your bed with a key and lock. Beds were comfortable. You can store your luggage in their sister hostel across the street for free when you check out and use their facilities any time. Overall perfect, can’t recommend it more.
