The 7 Best Hostels in Edinburgh (Updated 2025)

"This laid-back, classic backpacker joint has chill common areas, a small library, regular social events (pub crawls, Scottish dancing lessons), free coffee and tea, and a tour desk for day trips. There’s a simple breakfast for £3 and a handy perk of free travel adapters; beds are simple wooden bunks but include individual reading lights, outlets, and lockers (no curtains). Bathrooms can be a bit cramped but showers have good water pressure and everything is kept clean, so overall it feels homey and comfortable." - Matthew Kepnes

Best backpackers hostel in the city, tried a few, this is head and shoulders above the rest. Couldn't be more central, being as the name says on the Royal Mile, a great position for nightlife and sightseeing, handy for the railway station and buses. With a cozy atmosphere, it's quite small compared to most hostels which probably adds to the friendly feeling you get when you arrive. Very clean, warm, and quiet, the staff are extremely friendly and helpful you won't find a better place to stay.

Everything was great! This is the best hostel I've stayed at by far!! The people are so nice, the location is exquisite and the service is phenomenal. We could pick up our keys in the middle of the night, and we could leave our luggage for a longer period then the checkout time. Everything is cleaned daily. The room is clean and not dusty, the bathrooms are also very clean. The showers are fine and clean. If you need anything you can ask the volunteers and they also assemble great activities. I would 100% go back if I'm staying in Edinburgh again, so I recommend it dearly!!!

I rarely ever leave bad reviews, and honestly, I really enjoyed my short stay at this hostel. However, something extremely unpleasant happened that left me genuinely traumatized. I was given a towel - which I actually appreciated, especially since there was no deposit required - but after taking a shower and starting to dry myself, I discovered that the towel was covered in long black hairs… ALL OVER MY BODY… I had no idea what to do, I nearly threw up! It was absolutely revolting I understand that accidents happen, and maybe this was an isolated case. I have no idea who might have used the towel before me. But aside from being truly shaken by the experience itself, I was very upset by the reaction of the receptionist - she only offered an apology and thanked me for informing her, but took no further action. In situations like this, I believe it’s important to do something to make up for the mistake - offer a complimentary service, a free breakfast, refund, I don’t know - just anything! I left feeling extremely disappointed, and I honestly don’t know if I’ll ever be able to use hostel or hotel towels again, unless they are white so I can clearly see they’re clean. Other than that, everything was good for a hostel: clean facilities, free tea and instant coffee in the kitchen, and an excellent location. It might also be nice to add a small shelf or holder by the bed for essentials

Edimburg is a lovely city. My friend and I stayed for 2 nights in the Little Miss female dorm. The place is cozy, the staff was nice and helpful, and the showers and toilets were clean. The location is great, it's very close to the city center. Would recomend

I slept for only one night and it was nice. Cool place, quiet and people were respectful. As in all places in scotland, it is cold inside in winter and I was not able to get free towel after 22. Deffinitely recommend staying here!

YES! Best backpackers I’ve ever stayed at. Cosy and beautiful, free towels and tea/coffee and lots of amenities - can bring your own groceries and cook. Great playlist (love some jazz in the morning with a coffee by the window). Dead centre location. Staff are divine. Top bunks even have full chargers to themselves and you can control the heating from the radiator within the room, so no suffering from being too hot/cold! Also I felt really safe as a woman travelling solo. But mostly, the place was just so cute and romantic with its theme - you’ll particularly love it if you’re a Harry Potter lover like me 😊 Bloody book it!

My friend and I had the most amazing time in Royal Mike Backpackers. It has been the best hostel experience I’ve had so far. The staff were super kind and welcoming. I love that they have different fun things for the travelers, we even did Friendship Beacelets!

A wonderful hostel! One of the best I've ever stayed in. The staff were incredibly helpful, the place was pretty social and full of friendly people, the location is insanely good, and the overall vibe was cozy and comfortable. I'll definitely stay here if/when I come back to Edinburgh, couldn't recommend highly enough!

Yelp
I was not impressed with this place compared to Castle Rock hostel! This place is really small and doesn´t have the greatest social vibes. None of the girls in my room were very friendly or wanted to talk. This hostel would be good for somebody who likes peaceful surroundings and is trying to find quiet accomodation, but I was looking to socialize and meet fun people. It was fairly clean. The showers were tiny and it was hard to dress and undress in that small space. It worked for a night until my other accomodations were ready for check-in. The one thing it has going for it is its great location. Right on the Royal Mile.
