With $20 lunch specials, Royal Oak is a watering hole popular with trades working on nearby multi-storey sites. There's live music until 10 pm most nights. Facing O'Connell Street, the noisy tables are mostly smokers. The interior is clad with cool brass instruments and carnival relics. Service was jovial and drinks reasonably priced. Being open til 2am, it's a lively place late night hang out... then grab something sweet from the 24-hour bakery opposite.

I came here for the vegan feast, and it did not disappoint! The entrees my partner and I shared were all scrumptious. The vegan mushroom pizza was to die for! Mouth watering phenomenon! We finished with an Oreo brownie, which satisfied every spot! To top it all off the staff were very kind and lovely. Will definitely come again. ☺️

It is an okay kind of place. The live music is good with the choice of entertainers fitting for the relaxed decor. The food is standard pub stuff with the usual steak and chips 🍟 with the odd special dishes. Drinks are good with a few good choices of beer and wine 🍷. The service is slow and sometimes nonexistent. However, the prices for food and drinks are good.

If you’re looking for something to do on a Wednesday night, this is the place to be, band tunes and dancing, what great atmosphere! The exterior looks deceptive because upon entry, it is such a nostalgic look and vibe. The staff are friendly and attentive. Food and drinks were great Restrooms kept clean during service.

I’ve been here twice, amazing experience both times! The salt and vinegar potato’s are the best thing ever! Literally would go just to get these, also had the cheese burger spring roll and very impressed, Arancini balls are perfect, the staff we’ve had treated us very well, would go back.

Can you guys please fix your aircon. It was really needed Saturday night. Maybe add heavy duty fans in the beer garden? Excellent meals. Fast friendly bar staff. This venue was so ideal for our big function.

First time visiting Adelaide—this bar was nice place with good beer. However, After waiting for an hour and a half, my food order was never served because the kitchen forgot it. I was told the choice was out of stock. A very disappointing dining experience.

Went for Saturday lunch and grabbed the $19 schnitzel with a wine. What a bargain! I was totally obsessed with the chips. Best I've had. The staff were so lovely too. Plus regular cheap beer. Great music. Can't go wrong.

Yelp
TOP SPOT ! My wife and I used to live in North Adelaide, SA from 1998 to 2002. We soon found out that there were a lot of pubs in the area. We came here a few times in the evening when they used to put on live jazz bands. The food was pretty good and the patrons knew how to have fun. We had breakfast on the sidewalk patio a few times too. WE MISS IT !

Yelp
I guess I come here enough that I should refresh the review now and then. So here goes. Let's talk about the beer selection first as it's one of the best features of the place. Excellent collection of on tap beer that regularly rotates, great craft selections and most of all variety, along with the usual suspects. Fun things like $5 craft beer stubbies on Monday and a great location make it a top little drinking hole....if you like beer. The wine list hits the mark but isn't spectacular in any way, some nice options though. For food what is there to say. It's s pub, this is Australia you know what's coming. That said, the quality of food is high, servings are well proportioned, and the specials they do are quirky and generally more special-er than the usual gubbins a pub serves up. The live music is also great and worth stopping in for. Again, fun, variety, and we'll just quality is the thing. Come check it out.

Yelp
The food here was incredible. The dips were very fresh and plentiful. The fried chicken burger had 3 giant pieces of fried chicken in it. The food came out very quickly too. The staff were mostly friendly, only 1 bar was manned but there wasn't a huge crowd here for Sunday lunch. The only down side was that it was $20 for 2 drinks

Yelp
I have been here a few times and really enjoy it. It has a great atmosphere and interesting decor. Every visit has been rewarded with great food. Today we got the Duo House Dips, which were some type of hommus and a beetroot dip. It was served with pita bread and olives. The dips tasted so good I wanted to keep eating even after the bread was gone. For dessert we had the baked apple which was unique (at least for me). It was a whole apple that was stuffed with other fruits. It was baked and served in custard and topped with ice cream. It tasted great, my only complaint for today was that they left it sitting there for a bit so it was a little cold. Overall it is a great, fun place with resonable prices and live music.

Yelp
Breakfast for a king (or queen) at the Royal Oak. While this recommendation for breakfast was certainly not an obvious choice obviously those in the know, know what they're talking about! Our party of four were caffeinated and fed with excellent coffee and very filling delicious omelettes. Unfortunately we all chose the same (so no chance to taste other menu selections) but this was a stand out selection and well worth considering. Well priced, good value and obviously popular my tip is to make a booking on the weekend unless arriving prior to 9.00am! We'l be back to sample more delicious royal fare.

Yelp
So I kind of felt like we were being ignored because they thought we were American. Could just be me though because I'm use to Hawaiis customer service. I think Americans are annoying too lol. The food was good and the wine. We were taking our time and waiting for the band to come on. It was a bit weird that almost all the ppl there were 40+. But the music was good and the crowd was pleasant. Not loud or crazy.

Yelp
The Royal Oak is a popular North Adelaide pub with great food, and live music on four nights of every week, including a night of covers, jazz, acoustic and funk 'n' soul. Royal Oak lunches are something worth heading in for. Their $12 lunch menu covers all the regular favourites, and the meal sizes are generous with good quality ingredients. They focus on quality food, rather than on being cheap. (I recommend the Oak Burger - very yummy, as well as the fish and chips, beautiful beer battering and plenty of side sauces.) Their standard dining menu has a great range of different meats, including salmon, pork belly, lamb, duck and kangaroo. All their dishes have plenty of thought put into flavour combinations, so if you're going to try something a little different, you're in safe hands here. The Melitzana parmagiana is a great vegetarian option. It's a parmy made from eggplant and topped like a regular parmy (sans ham) with a delicious side of crispy garlic bread, great for dipping. This dish is hugely flavoursome, and you don't even have to be a huge fan of eggplant to enjoy it. They have a standard drinks list here, with only Bulmer's Original on tap for the cider drinkers. They stock a full range of the Baily & Baily wines, which I enjoy, because they're on the cheap end of wines. On the higher end, I cannot comment! I am a scrooge by heart. Not so stingy however that I don't appreciate good food - though it helps when it comes at good prices, with live music on the side.

Yelp
Again, I missed out on photos, but my past couple of experiences here have been fantastic! I've had the schnitzel twice (once on $10 schnitty night - Thurs) and both times the meals have come out quite quickly, are a decent sizing, and taste so yummy. The decor is lovely; I found there was always something new to look at or distract me from converasation (oops). While some staff have been a bit vague, there are also some really lovely, helpful ones, so it didn't faze me too much. AND! Monday nights are $5 Craft Beer stubbie nights. Such awesome things going on at this pub. It's quickly becoming my regular. Definitely the most enjoyable and comfortable pub on O'Connell street.

Yelp
Lunch today at the Royal Oak was a bit of a disappointment. It appeared they might have been understaffed. The meals took over an hour to arrive & all three steaks were way overcooked. Ordered medium rare rump steak but it came out well done so it was very dry & chewy. The chips were good side salad nothing special. Coffee afterwards was good.

Yelp
Sensational Great band, friendly staff and great crowd. We went on a Sunday night. It was relaxed, the band was spot on! Highly recommend

Yelp
Chips were great, good seasoning. Schnitzel was a little chewy but still enjoyable although I wasn't offered nor allowed a takeaway when I asked... hopefully this changes in future

Yelp
Squid & chips: soft/tender thick pieces of squid breaded & seasoned with pepper & possibly furikake. Hit the tongue smooth. Fried thick & crispy to compliment. Apple martini sour yumminess & their house pale ale on tap freshly made 45 minutes outside of Adelaide slid down the pallet nicely. The bartender was very patient & helpful with finding something "the Aussies enjoy" for me. Live music every night with different genres made it an enjoyable dinner, only thing it's for the older crowd... apparently you need to go outside the city toward the beach for a more youthful nightlife

Yelp
The Royal Oak Hotel, Sunday 10-07-16 Just another example of a good hotel gone bad from the craft work of 'ALH' I would eat somewhere else and go arrive for the band The hotel is was easy to find in North Adelaide along O'Connell Street where there is an accumulation of eating places with some street parking along O'Connell Street. We chose on street parking just around the corner with a short walk to the hotel. On entering the Hotel through the narrow wooden doors we noted that this place has great charm, with an eclectic collection of 'stuff' hanging off the walls and ceiling, a great bar in the middle of the room, a great vibe in the air as the band was warming up, so there was a sense of positive things for the night. As we were later than expected to arrive and wishing to join our friends we grabs a table close to the bar, had a look over the menu and selected items leaning toward the quicker things to prepare and cook. So I choose the easiest .....a chicken parmigiana and my life partner choose a Grazing Plate. Then the food came out and the positive sence for the night just went...... The chicken breast that was freshly crumbed on site (positive) and was deep fried to its enth of its life....then there was a smear of puréed tomato (not "Napoli Sauce" the traditional sauce to top a chicken parmigiana, not even something like a cooked tomato sauce with onion, garlic, basil....a bit of love.... a bit of attention... a bit of I give a "...") but just puréed tomato, probably just out of a can......may be freshly opened (I now feel special...!) Topped with shredded ham, not ham that looks may be like ham, but the ham that is left over from the process of ham, reformed, then pressed with an accumulation of artificial everything and then shredded into a 'type of ham'. Then this culinary delight (please note the sarcasm) topped with a shredded cheese. This product may have had the word 'mozzarella' printed on the packet...? But it did not melt, it just oozed over the crusty dried chicken breast, it was a flavourless and colorless example of something like cheese. The chicken (who gave it's life for us the human to enjoy its essence, it's ora, to appreciate it's life) was placed into an oven to dry out even more, so the cheese could ooze, so the ham(...?) could be warmed up. The salad was a standard, basic, simple (whatever is in your vocabulary) slices of cucumber (without the seeds, so the item will stay fresh..? for longer) wedges of tomato that should of stayed in the sun for longer to get something like some color and flavor, then this salad creation was topped with about ¼ of a sliced red onion. How much onion is just too much...? there is garnish, flavor, a bit of zing for the salad, and then there is ¼ of a red onion sitting on the salad. This salad was dressed with some type of dressing. The chips were freshly cooked. The Grazing Plate...Olives, sundried tomato strips, wedge of Australian styled Camembert cheese, Australian smoked salmon and Australian prosciutto, eggplant dip (Baba Ghanouj) and some pita bread wedges. The olives were life less, flavourless standard styled olives needing some love and attention (marinating). The sundried Tomato strips were from a packed come in dry, this is the cheapest form of preserved tomato (semi-dried or sun dried tomato) that you can obtain. Then the tomato was coated in dried rosemary leaves.....WTF! This made the sun dried tomato bitter and have little crunchy bits in it, no oil, vinegar, love and attention. The eggplant dip was a buy in product; these products can be good, especially with the parameters of a small kitchen where time and labor is tight. The amount of slices of the smoked salmon and prosciutto was the high light of this dish, but the rest as previously stated. The band "Zkye & The Guyz" was fantastic and I would attend another night to see the band, but dine somewhere else.

Yelp
When a burger claims to be the best in North Adelaide, you're expecting something pretty special. Even when factoring in some exaggeration, "pretty good" would've been acceptable. Instead what I got was truly awful. An overcooked patty between thin, soggy bread packed with way too much salad and bacon too crunchy to be easily eaten. Maybe my burger standards have gone through the roof since the introduction of Burger Theory and other burger joints such as Chuckwagon and Burgastronomy (both within walking distance of Royal Oak), but this was inexcusable. To me, a burger needs to be eaten with your hands. Even after cutting it in half, this was still impossible to eat without utensils. I eventually gave up and deconstructed it. My dining companions were much more fortunate with their meals, the beef salad being the standout of the bunch. Despite all this, the Royal Oak still has a relaxed, old-school sophistication to it with the recent renovations looking quite nice. Pity the burgers aren't up to scratch.

Yelp
Nice atmosphere, but service/food was a bit disappointing. Unfortunately we waited for an hour for my salt and pepper calamari and my friends burgers, calamari was disappointing, no flavour and very oily. However my friend's burgers were great. They had a basket of blankets in the beer garden which was a nice touch, would visit again but maybe just for drinks.

Yelp
For reason unknown to me - every time I catch up with my indie movie chic buddy for a flick at the Picadilly we always meet at the Royal Oak for a pint and if were peckish - a meal before a movie. Maybe its the retro fittings, the uber cool and relaxed vibe, great beers on tap - what ever it is we keep returning. The food is reasonable - not remarkable in my memory but a sufficient feed. My mind keeps wandering back to the tasty ciders I've tried on tap...mmm cider. Anyway - a cool joint, check out the live music, drag along a few mates and chillax to the max!

Yelp
The Royal Oak is dreamy... I could daze into the eyes at the bottom of this beer glass for hours. Wait those are the reflection of my eyes... taxi! Caters to the middle-aged crowd. Drink prices mostly keep the younger ones out. While at Uni, I'd walk by the Royal Oak a couple of times a week on the way home from the gym. I'd look through the window feeling like Clark Griswold in the Chritmas Vacation scene where he fantasizes about having a pool. Wanting to be inside, not out. Lots of personality. Mosaic tables, red padded chairs, timber flooring. The diner style lends itself particularly well to Sunday brunch. The $12 lunch menu is kinda special. And there are other meal deals as part of Greatfoodgreatvalue.com. Live music: Tuesday - Covers Wednesday - Jazz Friday - Acoustic Sunday - Funk & Soul

Yelp
I haven't dined at the Royal Oak, but I've regularly dropped in for the live music sessions. Be warned it tends to attract an older crowd here. That is a pleasant change to me from club-land, or for those who yearn to grab-a-granny, but it may be off-putting for those who wanna jive with the coolest kids in town. I appreciate the ecelectic, non-rock styles played here, at a not too deafening decibel level I might add. If you're looking for a hard-core party place the Oak is not where you'e gonna find it, but if you're keen on a still active (but more subdued) fun for all ages I'd recommend you at least check it out. In a nutshell - good times!

Yelp
I really like it here. Love the decor, the food hasn't let me down, the staff is very friendly and I keep coming back and that's during day! Havnt even been here for the shows, but it's all good. Good beer garden, great food and I recommend it! $10 schnitzels for lunch and they are YUMMMMMY

Yelp
Drink here. Do not eat here. Watching the food being prepared was reminiscent of a Ramsay's Kitchen Nightmares episode: Chef Mike(rowave) heating tupperwared food was in full swing, 'homemade' dip spooned from a large bucket with glad wrap that therefore wasn't sealed etc. The food 'preparation' is not up to any speed that's for sure.

Yelp
cool bar place. they have live music nights on thur-sat and sun I believe. there are two bar areas - with the beer area being behind at the back. the crowd frequenting this place seems to be in their 40s-50s. Lots of dancing happening every time there is a live music. Good relaxed place to hang out with friends.

Maxwell M.

Yelp
Admit to you I am a Bit of a Royal Oak Regular. Food lately has been great. Ive had 3 or 4 meals here in the past fortnight, all good. Steaks and the schnitzels are tasty, and cooked perfectly and served QuickTime. Music I mention this as The ROAk prides itself as a live music venue, very honestly the music offering sucked badly, But it now seems to be on the improve. The last two weeks have seen some return to sanity. Sunday sees thei Incredibles as a new band to The Royal Oak. Update u all after Sunday's Gig. I'll be there so come say HI!!
