3 Best Day Trips from Madrid: Segovia, Toledo, and San Lorenzo de El Escorial | Condé Nast Traveler

"Once the hillside summer palace of the Spanish monarchs, the magnificent Palacio Real de La Granja is where the royals would retreat to go hunting or escape the heat. This is a must-see for all tourists—especially anyone obsessed with royals. There's lots to explore inside the palace, of course, but the manicured gardens, packed with statues and fountains, deserve some time, too. Buy tickets in advance to avoid the lines." - Ramsey Qubein

Our visit to the palace was well with the twenty minute drive from Segovia. We were fortunate to have our own car and could go on our schedule, but we also heard there are daily buses from Segovia for those without a car. We opted for our own audio tour using an app they installed in our phone, which was offered in English among other languages. The palace is definitely grand and we enjoyed touring the various rooms. One of the highlights was the tapestry rooms/ museum, which contained the nicest set of tapestries, some very large, that we have seen. Other highlights were the various chandeliers and frescoes on the ceilings. The short visit to the church, included in the visit price, was also worthwhile. And after the tour we took a walk in the gardens. Although it was quite cold during our visit the garden walk was still quite nice. The land/ gardens are huge with many different areas to explore. We probably only walked a small fraction, but saw many fountains and good views of the estate and the mountains in the background. Recommend if you are in the area and have the time.

Visited in mid-March. Very beautiful historic palace of regional Spanish kings. Seems to be well preserved rooms. Furnishings are not to original use of rooms. Many are used as separate museum exhibits. We just walking tour on own. Signs in English & Spanish explain well. Did not tour gardens. However, the old cedar trees in front are very impressive. Only €4 for over 55. Worth the visit. About €20 taxi from train station. Then €22 taxi back to Castile in historic Segovia.

We came across this Royal Palace by chance whilst out exploring. Wow, we didn't visit the Palace as we entered the gardens first, free to enter. What an experience, makes English country estate gardens look very second best. We only had an hour to wonder around, and we could have explored for hours.

What garden this is. It's manicured and it's massive. Probably need a good few hours to appreciate.

A beautiful place to visit, even for a moment. You don't know how beautiful it was until you stop and look around.

Epic gardens beautiful greenery and scenery but all the water features and lakes are drained or dry... Apparently they are only on twice a year on 'feast' days. With flowing water everywhere it would be extraordinary... Next time.

I am so glad we took the time to visit La Granja! We did not go inside, but the gardens were so gorgeous! Very impressive and well worth your time.

Visitors of Segovia might find this place hard to reach without a car. From Segovia, go to Estacion Autobuses, take the line M-8 from Linecar. Buy ticket from the driver, with cash, 1,70€ one way. More information on time schedule below and in the pictures. It worths the visit both for the Palace and the gardens. Trees are the biggest asset of this huge garden. According to official statement there are about 100.000 trees here. They have a great app as audioguide that you can use on your own phone for the Palace, the church and the gardens. Since you're here, take the opportunity to also visit the nearby Real Fabrica de Cristales.
