These 11 Puppet Palaces Around the World Will Thrill and Terrify You

"Just steps away from the crowds of the Grand-Place, down an alley marked with the word Toone and two cherubs, lies a nearly 200-year-old puppet theater. Founded in 1830, the Théâtre Royal de Toone still offers several shows each week. For those who want to pair their puppetry with exceptional Belgian beers, its space is also home to a pub that lets you drink among the marionettes. According to Toone’s current owner, Nicolas Géal, Brussels had around 50 puppet theaters in the 19th century. Marionettes were often used to perform satires, as artists believed it was safer to filter biting commentary through the innocuous face of a doll. Today, the marionette theaters of Brussels have all but disappeared, but Toone keeps the tradition alive. Its 1,400 puppets perform classics such as Romeo & Juliet, The Three Musketeers, and the Nativity story. After the curtain falls, thirsty audience members can head to the adjacent pub. While the show may be over, the theater’s “stars” still dominate the creepy-cozy space. Dolls dangle from the rafters; decapitated, mustachioed puppet heads peer down from above a door; and, on a small, spotlit stage, two swashbuckling marionettes freeze mid-duel. In addition to its diverse array of dolls, Toone also has an impressively varied beer list, from refreshing blondes and tart, cherry krieks to full-bodied browns and offerings from almost all of Belgium’s Trappist breweries." - ATLAS_OBSCURA

Know Before You Go If you haven't hit your puppet quota, there's also an on-site museum that features many of the theater's dolls. It's opened up during intermission at performances. There are shows on Thursday and Friday at 8:30 p.m., and Saturday at 4:00 p.m. and 8:30 p.m. Unless otherwise noted, the shows are in French." - Sam OBrien, beefjorky, Collector of Experiences

An interesting location in an old puppet theater, where you can enjoy Trappist beer surrounded by marionette dolls. The place is quiet and discreet — it feels like stepping from a noisy street into a fairytale. I didn’t really like the taste of the beer, but the place itself is wonderful. In the evenings, there’s a puppet show.

A Hidden Gem of Brussels – Charming, Quirky, and Full of Character! The Royal Puppet Theatre Toone is one of those rare places that makes you feel like you’ve stepped into a forgotten part of Brussels’ soul. Tucked away in a narrow alley in the heart of the city, this tiny theatre offers an experience that’s both whimsical and deeply rooted in local tradition. The building itself is cozy and atmospheric—dimly lit, filled with old puppets, and oozing with history. You can feel the centuries of storytelling that have unfolded here. The staff at the bar is very friendly and funny. Definitely is a must visit for anyone who is visiting Brussels.

A very weird but quirky old pub! Has a great menu of beers and the staff are great with recommendations. It’s interesting to see all the different puppets hanging from the ceilings! Would recommend a visit here!

Shame to say that we didn't get to truely experience this beautiful location. The young lady serving walked past us numerous times and even though we even called out to her she was more interested in flirting with a table men seated behind us or smoking her Vape.

On a crisp 7 December evening, I had the profound pleasure of experiencing Brussels' venerable Théâtre Toone's nativity puppet show. Despite my limited grasp of French, the performance transcended mere linguistic understanding - the masterful puppetry and theatrical wit shone through brilliantly. The show sparkled with distinctly Brussels humor, weaving local references and cultural nuances into the timeless nativity narrative. It evoked fond memories of England's pantomime tradition, yet with an enchanting Belgian twist through the medium of intricately crafted marionettes. On my previous visit, though the puppet show eluded my schedule, I found solace in the theater's charming café. There, while savoring an expertly poured Oude Geuze Boon - that gloriously complex traditional Belgian beer - I enjoyed warm conversation with the establishment's wonderfully hospitable staff. Their passion for this historic cultural institution was palpable. This remarkable venue, with its intimate theatrical space adorned with rich crimson curtains and gold trim, stands as a testament to Brussels' rich cultural heritage. I eagerly anticipate my return next year, when I shall once again lose myself in the magical world of Toone's puppetry.

Great experience ! It’s all in Brussels slang and Flemish and it’s almost 2 hrs long but you can stay to enjoy the first 30 minutes. I think that’s enough for an English speaker. Cash entrance only. No cards. A must do
