My reasons for being in Newcastle were not that of glamorous business travel, however, I found myself in need of somewhere central to stay for the night. Within a few minutes of the train station is the Royal Station Hotel.
The hotel is quite large - and typical of the traditional hotels you'd expect next to Victorian railway stations.
Inside, there's a large foyer, with corridors leading to the reception, function suites, a restaurant, a bar, a gym and a pool. For a 3 star hotel, it's very well appointed.
I didn't try out any food, the gym or the bar, but the room itself was more than adequate.
I stayed in a small double, which has all the usual features you'd expect, including free wifi - and an extremely comfy bed. A nice touch was the mini-fridge with complimentary mineral water, fruit juice and chocolate biscuits. At £55 for the night, it did represent excellent value.
If I was in Newcastle city centre again and needed somewhere to stay, I'd be quite likely to go back here.
