We’re big sushi fans, so finding a sushi spot while traveling is basically non-negotiable. That said, if you’ve been spoiled by next-level sushi in places like Japan or Vancouver, Rub 23 might feel a little… tame.
The good: the fish is undeniably fresh. The sashimi is clean, simple, and genuinely delicious, easily the standout here. The kids were obsessed with the sushi pizza, which is fun, crunchy, and very much designed to please. The not-so-good: the rolls were generally unremarkable. They’re visually appealing but lack punch, creativity, or that wow factor you hope for at this price point. Flavor-wise, they play it safe, almost too safe. And then there’s the cost. Rub 23 is expensive, even by Iceland standards, which makes the average rolls harder to justify.
Bottom line: Rub 23 will satisfy a sushi craving in northern Iceland, but don’t expect it to compete with the sushi capitals of the world. Stick to sashimi, manage expectations, and accept that location, not flavor, is driving the price.
