9 Stylish London Hotels for Under $300 a Night - AFAR

"Part of the Munich-based Ruby group’s “lean luxury” approach, this 153-room Farringdon hotel subtly riffs on a Dickensian theme without kitsch, blending minimalist guest rooms with literary nods like an over-bed quill-and-book installation. The buzzy lobby bar references local bookbinding heritage with embossing tools and letterpress blocks, rooms include Marshall desktop speakers, and guests can even rent acoustic or electric guitars; it sits within easy walking distance of the Postal Museum and the Charles Dickens Museum." - Nicholas DeRenzo

I was visiting Germany in order to attend Oktoberfest in Munich! This hotel hit all of the marks and the staff made the stay here that much better. A special S/O and thank-you go to Dominick and to Arian! These two gents were AMAZING with their ability to multi-task AND to do so in a very professional manner! 🙌🏾😊🙌🏾 My hope is to make it back to Munich one day and if I do, then I'll be sure to stay at the Ruby Lilly! 😍🤩😍

I stopped by the bar at Ruby Hotel in Munich and was really impressed by the atmosphere and service. The place has a stylish, relaxed vibe — perfect for a casual drink or catching up with friends. What really made the experience stand out was the excellent customer service. Razvan was incredibly friendly and attentive, making sure everyone felt welcome and taken care of. It’s rare to find that mix of professionalism and genuine warmth. I’ll definitely be coming back!

I visited two years ago, and now on my second trip to Munich, I came back again. The atmosphere here is so warm and inviting dim lighting, calm music, and a design that beautifully blends old money elegance with modern touches. The amazing cocktails make it all even better. The staff are incredibly friendly, and Liv especially kept checking in to see if we needed anything. She helped me find a cocktail style that matched the drinks I love! I also had some cocktails crafted by Pierre. absolutely professional. Everything here is both top-notch and genuinely welcoming. And for a hotel bar, the prices are very reasonable. 👍🏼

I had an amazing experience at the Ruby Lily while traveling to Munich especially with the staff. Arian and Ahmer were truly amazing! Arian I’ve made life long friends with. He had great cocktails and amazing conversation. He was kind and easy to talk to. Ahmer gave great costumer service and cared about his job. He was also very kind and easy to talk to. These two people made my stay there well worth it. I’m glad to have met both of them.

This is a basic utilitarian hotel selling a woke message not backed up with any true care for the traveller. The copywriting on their site is truly fantastical but the real information is hidden, references to “Lean Luxury” are not fully explained. If you’re ok with no amenities and don’t mind TMI with your travelling companion you’ll be fine. Most basic hotel items are not here but you do get a bodywash in the shower. Your tea and coffee options are available in a “galley” down the hall with multiple options in tea although strangely no normal black tea, and instant coffee. Despite the apparent focus on sustainability and luxury, the cups are cardboard and multiple plastic and paper items are utilised. There are no fridge/water/basic hotel supplies in your room. The bed is comfortable though equipped with 2 individual doonas, not one for the whole bed.||The toilet has an opaque door through which you can see anyone you’re sharing with, and you can only step in and out of the shower from the toilet, with your basin etc outside this area. I’ve been with my partner for over 30 years and this is a new experience in sharing. In our room there is no bedside table on one side, making use of a medical CPAP device difficult. Towels are worn and scratchy and the only place to hang them is inside the toilet. ||We are having to transit through Munich and paying a huge cost due to Oktoberfest. For sure stay at this hotel if you can get it cheaply and you’re travelling alone, or don’t mind seeing your partner in the bathroom and sleeping next to the toilet. Despite the blurb, there is no luxury here. Champagne chic? No.|The front desk staff were friendly, despite the hotel’s best efforts to make this a self check in self do everything experience.

Last night, I was at the bar of the Ruby Lilly Hotel with some friends. I absolutely loved the decor! The sofas, lamps, shelves, and the bar itself… truly an amazing design. On top of that, the cocktails were fantastic, you absolutely must try them if you visit. Huge thanks to Pia for the delicious cocktail and to Liv for the warm, friendly service and lovely conversation. I’ll definitely be staying here next time I’m in town! 100% recommended!

Wonderful stay at this hotel. Its prime location near the train station made it extremely convenient for travel. Additionally, it's very walkable to the city center, which allowed me to explore easily. The room was spacious, with a chic and cozy vibe. I loved the attention to detail in the decor and the added bonus of having a Marshall speaker to use. Overall, I really enjoyed the vibes and ambiance of the hotel. I would definitely book again and highly recommend it to others.

We had a delightful weekend at the Ruby Lilly last month! A huge highlight was the bar, Liv was absolutely fantastic. Her friendly, upbeat energy and great service really made our nights there special. And to top it all off… we’re pretty sure we met Eiffel 65! 😄 It was such a fun and unexpected twist to an already memorable stay. All in all, an amazing experience—we’ll definitely be back and highly recommend it to anyone visiting Munich!

Yelp
On a recent Trip to Munich, had the pleasure of staying at the Ruby Lilly for 1 night. It is done quite well in an industrial style, beautiful large bar , great rooftop patio. Staff are friendly, helpful and a special mention for Dominic. He made sure the cheese we had bought during our trip was refrigerated properly as the rooms do not have a fridge. The room itself was cozy with large windows , clean and comfortable bed .

Yelp
We loved our two-night stay in Munich. The bar and lounge area is comfortable, stylish, and inviting. The room was small, but the details and design were very cool. Everything was very well organized and very clean. Most noticeably, the staff were incredibly attentive, very kind, and always accommodating. They went above and beyond for us with every request and made our stay incredibly pleasant. I would come back to the Ruby Lilly next time - no question.

Yelp
Loved this hotel! Liv is the definition of customer service. She went above and beyond and made our stay so fantastic! Liv I hope you see this. My family and I cannot thank you enough.

Yelp
Our room is approximately 12' x 18'. If you sleep with a partner, one of you will need to climb up a step to access your side of the bed. It is a platform bed that faces a set of windows. There is no room to open your suitcase(s). It is a "Green" hotel which has a requirement that you insert your room key into a slot to access lights and ac/heat. Not a problem except it isn't clear how to turn off the ceiling lights without removing the key from the slot. I can't express how much this room is uncomfortable, unwelcoming, and confining. I will never stay here again and if I had the option, I would move to another hotel immediately.

Yelp
Chris! That's all you need to know for the bar. If you are looking for a great cocktail he will point you in the right direction and had a little flair. One of the best espresso martinis I have had

Yelp
This is a nice hotel for a single or a couple. Technologically advanced with everything from check in to check out. They give you a free smart phone that you can use during your time in Munich which was a very delightful surprise. Room is small but neat with everything in there perfectly spaced out. Watch out though. The curtain was dark so if you are not careful you may end up over sleeping! There is a bus station nearby but that one does not allow you to buy the ticket but most bus has the ticket machine in the actual bus.

Yelp
I've stayed here twice approximately one year apart and have always had a great experience. This is my go-to hotel in Munich. The rooms are clean, trendy and modern. There are good amenities: the in room toiletries smell amazing, take along handy (cellphone), in room safe and tablet. I've stayed in both the cozy room and the lovely room, and for two people the cozy room is just a bit too cozy if you're used to American-sized hotels. I would definitely recommend getting the breakfast. It is excellent, mostly organic and "typisch deutsch" without being too traditional. Late night bar is great. Good cocktails and good service. This is an interesting area, as Dachauer Straße has a lot of restaurants and clubs but is definitely not touristy. It's a short 10 minute walk from the main Bahnhof, 2 minutes to the subway and a 5 minute subway ride to downtown.

Yelp
This is not a bad hotel, matter of fact, it has a very modern/hip lobby that reminds of me citizenM at the Amsterdam airport when I had a long connect flight. The front desk staffs are layback and friendly. Hotel is a block away from the subway that's convenient, the area has some selections of restaurants in the walking distance. So, why the 3-stars? Reason #1, The room is TINY!!!!! Maybe if you are one person in this room, you can leave your luggage out in one corner that you don't really use. If you have two people in the room, you really can't leave any luggage open unless you want to walk on your bed cuz you won't have a walk way at all. The room is so small, you have to walk through the toilet room to the shower. And the sink is next to the bed and TV, as crazy as that sentence sound, if you see the photo you'll understand the whole set up in this room IS THAT CRAZY! There is no closet to hang your cloth, you have 3 hooks on the wall right next to the door right next to the sink! They are so close to each other you can't even properly hang your coats without them overlapping each other. They have a tiny safe that's attached to the table that the sink is sitting on. They also have the smallest side table I've ever seen next to the bed, it's about 2 1/2 iPad mini and only one side of the bed has side table. The rooms I had in the middle of Shinjuku Tokyo were bigger than this!!! Ok let's move on from the tiny room situation, I think you get the picture. Another reason why I rated this cool hotel only 3 stars because THERE IS NO PRIVACY! I'm staying with my husband which I basically seen everything that I could see for 4 years. But I really don't need the glass shower area to see him or myself to be seen when him or I trying to clean myself. Remember I mentioned that you'll have to walk through the toilet room first to get in shower? The toilet area is also about 2 feet away from the bed with a thin glass door. It might as well has no door cuz you can hear the other person breathing let alone using the toilet. Reason #3 why this place only gets 3 stars - there is no phone in the room for you to call the front desk. I literally have to go to their site and find the hotel phone number and dial with the mobile phone they have in the room. And the TV broke twice tonight and we just checked in couple hours ago. (Update: the TV is broke again this morning after maybe 2 hours of it working last night) Reason #4, the shower is strange. You can choose from rain head or hand held, but your handheld actually have to be hold by hand because it doesn't sit at an angle, also the water would stay at the temperature that you set for about 2 minutes then it drops about 10° for about 5 seconds that makes it really cool and then heat up for about 20° and burn you for 5 seconds then go back to the temperature you set! Real fun for my 15 minute shower let me tell you. If you are single traveler, enjoy cool hotels, like to hang out at the bar and mingle, I think you would like this place a lot. If you prefer a comfortable room that you can leave the luggages out without tripping over it or not feeling claustrophobic, I suggest you look somewhere else. I usually stay at Aloft near the Haupbahnhof which is about the same price, twice as big nice rooms! It's right across the main train station which could seem a little seedy but it's actually fine inside the hotel and super convenient if you want to get food/shopping later at night or take train to work or travel, that's the main station that goes to all kinds of places. Ok let's wrap this review up with some nice words for this hotel - it is quiet inside the room and mattress is queen size which is kinda small but it's comfortable! They also offer breakfast buffet from 6:30-10:30am for €17 if you don't feel like going out.

Yelp
My husband booked our stay here for the first part of our honeymoon trip and we loved our stay! The staff is so friendly and helpful. I believed we stayed in a lovely room which was great for our 5 night stay. The breakfast was amazing and so helpful when we had such busy days planned. I wish we could visit more often! Thank you Ruby Lilly for the hospitality:)

Yelp
No iron in the rooms, tablet is waking up the guest. The lights control is not logical, not clean at all. The design does not compensate for the other issues. The mattress is good though. Not recommended for business stays.

Yelp
Got the chance to stay here for my last night in Munich. Loved it! The staff was super nice and helpful. They make awesome drinks at the bar and the decor is super hip. Can't wait to stay here again!

Yelp
Great little find in Munich. It's close to the city's central attractions and is very easily accessible by public transportation. 24-hour bar/lounge and a nice casual-chic vibe. Smallish rooms but they're cleverly appointed. I also appreciated the complimentary Handy smartphone--a smartphone with a data plan is placed in every room. It's an incredibly convenient perk for foreign travelers.
