The 10 Best Things to Do in León, Nicaragua in 2025

"The ruins of León Viejo date back to the 16th century and are one of Nicaragua's two UNESCO World Heritage listings; discovered in 1967 with excavations beginning in 1968, the site is one of the oldest Spanish colonial settlements in the Americas and even if you're not a history buff like me it's worth a visit." - Matthew Kepnes

Amazing place if you are even a little bit interested in history, it is a fairly new excavation as it was only rediscovered in 1967 (there are still new excavations taking place). The $5 (180c) entrance fee also includes a guide that shows you around and explains all of the ruins. All of the signs are written in spanish, our guide was incredible and really nice and she also tried her best in English as we spoke very little spanish and she had no problem using our translator to help us out a bit. Highly recommend.

Interesting ruins of the Spanish capital of the province of Nicaragua. Well marked with Spanish and English plaques explaining everything. Also 3 small museums on site included in the entrance fee. $5 for foreign tourists.

Interesting if you want to learn more about León and León Viejo. About one hour private guided tour by a local that knows a lot about the history of León. Most of the tour is outside.

Very interesting stop. It was out of the way of many other tourist stops but definitely worth the detour. Our tour guide was very informative and eager to tell us the story of the ruins (note that she only spoke Spanish, so if you don't speak Spanish you might not get as much from the tour). There was a small museum that we viewed before going to see the ruins. The tour took about 75 minutes. Definitely recommend!
