Rural Supply Hardware

Generally a nice location, good selection, and friendly helpful staff but they can’t seem to make keys. I had some keys made last year, they didn’t work, I went back two more times and still none of them worked. I gave up and had them made elsewhere. I didn’t think much of it until one of my coworkers today mentioned they also had similar issues getting keys made at this location.

A very nice neighbourhood store. Rural has most everything and a warm staff there to help with your DIY projects.

Great little hardware store! Recently bought out by Ace hardware and, while I miss my familiar Rural friends, the staff is exceptionally helpful. Parnell, you're awesome!

Amazing customer service!! I needed help with something and Chris went above and beyond to help me dissemble a shelf and fit it in my car. I am beyond grateful!!

SO happy to have this shop in town. And everyone is so helpful! Sometimes there are more experienced-looking people (yes, I mean older! ;-)) in there, but often it’s younger high-schoolers. But they know their stuff! I don’t know another business who has such helpful young people who know where to find everything in the store! As a business owner myself, I’m jealous they have such good training. I try, but teach me! Thanks for being a great shop in our community ;-) And go, kids!

Very dissatisfied and disappointed with the complete lack of of service I just received. Store is going through updates and they are relocating and restocking their inventory and the store is understandably disorganized and things are not where they might normally be. Totally understandable. I get that. After spending my time making my way through the entire store looking for the 5 items I came to buy I could not find them. Made it all the way to the back counter where I encounter an employee on a computer who asked me if I needed help finding anything. I said that I did, providing the information on what I was looking for. He pointed and told me that is "up in the front right of the store". I told him that I had looked there and did not see any of the items I needed. Then, with him knowing that the store is disorganized and that area in particular is being gone through pretty heavily to be reorganized simply said, "that is where it will be" and went back to working on the computer. I am a customer in the store looking to spend my $$ with a local merchant but that is seemingly not willing to reciprocate with basic customer service.. I do not recommend visiting this store and I will never be back myself even though this business is only a few blocks from my home.

Amazingly well-stocked local hardware and industrial supply store located in downtown Los Gatos. Very friendly and knowledgeable staff. This is now my go-to place for specialty plumbing and electrical pieces. I was also impressed with the prices; I was surprised that for the dozen or so items I checked, they were competitive with Amazon and the big stores like Home Depot. Highly recommended.

I went there for a few parts for home repair. I stayed to watch the baby chicks, browse all the useful gadgets, and just otherwise enjoy the ambiance. This is a great hardware store for small and large projects alike and really friendly atmosphere.

Visited on 2/26/25, 9:30am. Parnell and his coworker (didn't catch his name) were extremely welcoming, kind, and helpful. They were attentive to my needs and very knowledgeable as well. They showed me options for the materials I needed and found the best choice for me at a fair price. I appreciated that they spoke to me respectfully when responding to my questions and concerns. Will definitely be coming here next time I need equipment!

Under new ownership/managment! I'm actually the new manager here and we are going to do our best to make every experience the best! If we are less than 5 stars I want to know! We are upgrading the store and bringing in new products like household items, bbq, outdoor accessories, power tools etc. our goal is to curate what Rural Supply has always been, while enhancing our products to best support our neighbors. Please shop here. Skip Home Depot and Lowe's. Great people, great service, and always seem to have what you're looking for despite not having acres of store. They are locally owned and employ local kids. You might have to pay a little more than HD and Lowe's, but suck it up, you're Los Gatos. New owner making a go of it, after the last owner threw in the towel. Think Cunningham Hardware from the Happy Days.

Starting to really love this store. I usually go to the uptown ace because it's a little closer, but these guys manage to stock a lot of things that all other HW stores locally don't. The latest find was metric machine screws down to 1.6mm. I needed M2, but no one else went below 3M. Rural Supply for the win!

My son needed spray paint for his first job of painting curbside numbers on residences which he ran out of. We showed up at 6:15pm after he googled the closing time of an ACE, the lady working saw us try and open the door and quickly answered and said come on in. She showed us exactly where the product is and checked us out with a smile on her face. Outstanding customer service from start to finish, I didn't get her name but you have a gem there.

Imagine walking into a big box hardware store looking for just the right part to finish a job. Even if you're lucky enough to find someone knowledgeable, there's no way they'll sell you a single rubber washer for fifteen cents. For that kind of old fashioned service, just head to Rural Supply in downtown Los Gatos. Brothers Ken and Tim Nelson have built a successful business over the decades catering to local do-it-yourselfers just like me. They'll answer your questions and offer advice even if you don't buy anything. I also like the fact that they employ local kids in the summer and year round. Small neighborhood hardware stores like this are a dying breed. I try to support local businesses whenever I can, so I make it a point to shop at Rural Supply whenever I need anything for my home or garden. You should too!

I was delighted to find this old fashioned hardware store on the edge of downtown Los Gatos. It has a small supply of almost every basic item and a few more odds and ends. It was busy, too, which was nice to see as the economy is still plugging along at a snail's pace.

Very good. Very helpful. Very kind. These people focus on being a hardware store and earning your business. No Mask is OK. Keep fair distance with respect but they don't force Junk Science and group think ideology. They do their jobs and focus on serving customers. BRAVO!

I was so disappointed with customer service, particularly with Ken (he is one of the owners). He is very rude, he is always too busy to help people. He yells at young employees, I feel very bad for the kids who work there.

Everyone is so nice and helpful. Today Chris helped us, even ordered an extra hook for us to pick up in a few days. I've been here a few times and have never had a negative encounter. It truly makes LG feel like a small town.

Great hardware store that carries all of the little odd and ends that you can't get at a big box. Staff is friendly, helpful and accommodating.

The owner/manger of the store is very rude and not helpful. This store is only fine if you don't need someone's assistance to find something. But, if you will ask the manager a question about finding something in the store or how to fix something, get ready for an earful of insults. Not sure how this place stays in business.

Helpful people who are willing to spend a bit of time helping you make something work that has no right working.

I don't know why it was impossible to find the right table/foot pads online and big box hardware but Rural Supply Hardware (An Ace Hardware) and only this store had what I wanted. 1.75-inch round self leveling adhesive feet saved my day with table as did square pads for liquor bar. And I found the right sized rubber washers to apply to spherical wine rack feet to prevent sliding. Just could not find these. I also have bought garden supplies here, hardwood, and wood inserts with hex screws - staff is really helpful tracking down solutions.

Man, I love this place. I find the owner and his staff to be some of the friendliest, most helpful hardware people I've ever come across. That's why I was shocked to see a couple of the reviews here, but I guess everyone has a bad day from time to time. In any event, I come in here all the time with stupid questions about how to hang things. I am never sure what kind of hardware I should use for the job at hand, and they ALWAYS help me figure it out. Typically I work with the owner, but Parnell is a a gem as well. They've hooked me up with the right screws / washers / lock nuts / fasteners for all of my various jobs, without complaint, and without making me feel stupid. I recently told my husband that we should start trying to shop here more often. Less Home Depot, more Rural Supply!! They've earned it.

Super rude customer service by a man who acted like a manager at this location. Treated me like an inconvenience. Acted like helping a customer was not part of the stores job.

Rural Supply is a convenient and well-stocked store. The help is knowledgeable and usually available. It is not as big and busy and other Ace hardware stores, but that ,actually, is one of its appeals. Before the Saratoga store opened, this was my go0-to hardware store. Now I have one close to home. Seasonal items are interesting here and after-season sales or very good. I still come here for that! Parking can sometimes be dicey, so it is best to go mid-morning or after 2:30.

Old-school real deal cute hardware store nestled in downtown Los Gatos - everything you need. Nice folks too! Helped me find some organic potting soil.

I prefer Ace to the big box stores. This one looks like a country store and has some character. Good knowledgeable employees who were very patient with my naive questions.

Nice neighborhood hardware store with nice people. I have gone there several times to get things that were difficult to find this summer like tomato cages. Not huge, not comprehensive like Home Depot but convenient and easy to get in and out of and they have a good general selection.

I have always had a great experience at Rural Supply. My daughters can't wait for Easter to look at or buy more chickens. Most prices are competitive with Home Depot and location is much more convenient. I even find things at Rural Supply that are not available at other hardware stores. I have always had excellent service, even with Ken or his employees ; )

Great store, with knowledgeable people and helpful products. So much quicker to just ask for help at this store and find what you need than to go to the warehouse hardware stores. When I have been in the store everybody was wearing masks.

The customer service here is impressive. It's what sets place like this mom and pop stores apart from the big box stores, it's the customer service. Came in here looking for a hitch for my SUV and although they didn't get a sale out of me, they came out to my car, and told me where to go to get my issue fixed. Will be using them more often.

I REALLY wish I could say more nice things about this place. I have been here three times and all three times trying to get someone to help me has been absolutely murderous. Given this is the closest ACE to me now.... it sucks. I'm not saying the people are bad or anything but I've flat out asked for help and not gotten it. I couldn't get things down (and LOTS of things are up high) and watched members of the staff continue conversations (personal) while I waited. I finally gave up, climbed up, and got it myself. The poor cashier gal, (who was a sweetheart) apologized for me having to do that and said she would have helped if she didn't have a line. I told her sadly it wasn't the first time it had happened. In addition, our landlord had nothing but problems getting keys made here. I took one trip to the ACE in Willow Glen and it was done. I am wondering if the key machine at this particular store needs to be re-calibrated but nobody has noticed. I am all about the corner hardware store, which ACE tries to be.... but man.... Since I am pretty much stuck, I'm hoping my experiences will get better. If they do I will update.

Friendly staff and a lot of variety of tools. I love how they literally have all the random stuff other hardware stores don't have. Metric or standard whichever you need they have.

If you live in Los Gatos you have two choices for hardware stores, Ace-Rural or Orchard Supply on Los Gatos Boulevard. On several occasions Rural has saved my behind, the last being when my plumber with my assistance dug up and repaired our damaged sewer line. We ended up knocking out 3 sprinkler lines in the process which is pretty par for the course, It was 4:30 p.m. and I wanted to get these lines fixed ASAP so we could close the trench which would allow my gardener to get the sod in place. I wanted to avoid heading to either of the Home Depots, and gave Rural a shot, sure enough they had all the piping and fittings needed to fix our damage. I would give Rural 5 stars and I really like buying from a small family run business, but on every occasion I have visited them the cashiers have been pretty checked out as they wished they were somewhere else. Personally I could care less as I imagine if I was 16-18 I would also want to be somewhere else, like on a beach in Santa Cruz. But, in case any of the Yelpers were expecting a very cheery greeter/cashier be warned.

Great, great customer service. I go here all the time and they have helped me through every part of renovation as well as gardening. This Ace is a throw-back to good old-fashioned customer care. Their staff is super knowledgeable, helpful and not at all sales-y. They make every effort to figure out your issue and then provide clear options to help guide your purchases. When I started going here, I was pretty clueless about most home improvement projects but now I have a number of great tools, advice and resources to help me in my unrelenting quest to MarthaStewartize my humble abode. Moreover, I'm no longer intimidated by doing home repairs, etc. because I know when I get to Ace, someone will be able to guide me in getting the job done.

Ace is pretty ok. They have most of what you need, though the store is definitely much smaller than your box gignormous hardware stores that now dominate the sector. This store is kind of the only game in town, and they seem to be suitable for the smaller home projects that pop up. They do have decent garden tools, but if you are looking for flowers, trees, and such, you are better off heading up to the Summer Winds in Campbell. The prices are quite reasonable, and they have tons of staff per square foot. There must be some decent margins in hardware, as their labor costs much be pretty high. The staff is pretty young, but seem to be quite friendly and generally helpful. Dudes rooming the aisles looking to help customers find things, while the girls man the registers up front. You can recycle batteries and lightbulbs here too. Much more pleasant than shopping at Home Depot.

Great customer service. Connor went above and beyond. This store has a small, hometown vibe. I come here whenever possible. Especially fun to take kids when they have chicks.

GREAT CUSTOMER SERVICE. need i say more? come here with your list of supplies and they'll help you find it or you can look down the aisles yourself. need something fixed but don't know what to get - you can ask one of the employees or the owner. they're all pretty knowledgeable. i love these little small hardware stores as opposed to the big home depot kinds. its just more homey and personable.

Wow. If you've ever gone to Home Depot and left with the wrong item because you couldn't get help, Rural Supply Ace Hardware is the answer. Every single person there can take you to the section you need and help you figure out exactly what item to buy. If you can get this kind of help without the crowds, why would you go anywhere else? This is the kind of local business that is disappearing, which is a huge shame, because their experience is priceless. Just go here! Please note: Parking in Downtown Los Gatos can be difficult, but this store has private parking on the side and in the back, plus a convenient side entrance from the parking lot. Don't let parking keep you away!

Rural Supply (aka Ace-Rural) is one of the hidden gems of Los Gatos. We recently experienced this for the first time. Last Sunday afternoon we were given a thorough overview on vegetable gardening. We came away with great tips from the staff that methodically walked us through the best way to put everything in place. We ordered a watering/feeding trough for our above ground garden, netting and 30 bags of top spoil & potting soil. Service is king in the world of small business - as a result we will be coming back to Rural for the long term. Thanks Rural Supply!

When I use to live in the downtown area this place was a jewel for me. I still go there from time to time when I stop by the post office across the street. The selection is surprisingly good. The staff has always been eager to help. At the checkout counter they always have some unique things I can use. There is limited street parking and the parking lot to the side offer additional parking, which is nice for downtown.

Terrific service. I was looking for some rope for my tomato plants and he suggested a cheaper product that was better for the job. They aren't out to rip you off and really wanna help. I recommend this location

Fast service. Clean store. They open early enough for early risers. Parking is limited. But it's in downtown los gatos so it'll be a nice walk if you park anywhere.

Great local hardware store. The staff is always curteous and helpful and if you have a question that requires expertise the owner is very knowledable accross a wide variety of topics. Additionally, if a repair can be done with a $2.00 part rather than a full $30 replacement they will tell you. They seem to have everything that is used in local homes. Regarding the return policy: I have never had a problem with a return. They understand that sometimes you buy two different parts and can only use one of them

Been going here for years. Great stock, good prices, and very friendly, very knowledgeable staff - I have a handyman business, but I still learn things from these guys! Best hardware store in the area.

Last week I went into the store at 8:05 am asking for help to get feed for my chicken. I needed a 50 lb bag so I couldn't carry it to my car. I asked the owner if someone could help me. Him and 2 other workers were putting stuff outside to display. He said he couldn't help me! I asked what about the other two boys. He got very upset and said no we need to get this stuff outside first before we can help you. I told him I have a high schooler that needs to get to school by 8:15 am. He furiously said no. Come back later. I'm NEVER going back! The store hours are from 8 am - 6 pm. I was there when the store was open & the owner would not help me when he has two other boys available to help. POOR CUSTOMER SERVICE!!!

If you live in the mountains as I do, Ace Rural Supply is your closest hardware store. Even though it's more convenient, I stopped going there regularly about 20 years ago because of the rude owner/manager and his petty, stingy return policies. I give them a try every few years, thinking maybe things have changed. Nope -- it's like time stands still at that store. Nothing changes. The salespeople and owner are unfriendly. Invariably the young girls at the cash register (under age 20) are unsmiling and if you try to chat with them they ignore you. I normally always go a few miles more to the Ace on Los Gatos Blvd, a much larger store and much more friendly, helpful salespeople. Just pull into the Rural Supply parking lot and look at all the warning signs posted everywhere & you'll get some idea of the owner's personality.

ACE Rural Supply is my go to hardware store when I need to replace light bulbs and have keys made. They carry feed, tools and even those cute Red Flyer wagons. What I like is that there are plenty of sales clerks throughout the store who always stop to ask if you need help. Prices are a tad bit higher than Home Depot. There is a small parking lot on the side and a few spots in the front but busy weekends mean you have to compete with a lot of other residents for parking. ACE Rural Supply is also family owned so you know you are contributing to a mom and pop business.

When can you ever go into a hardware store these days and find anyone who knows anything about tools, paint, chicken food etc etc. Well, they do here! I love this store--always have. People know their business and clearly like what they do. A wonderful place to get advice and help.

This hardware store might be small, but it's made up for with knowledgeable, friendly staff and a wide selection o what they do carry. The barn out back has hay, alfalfa, and other feed. It's competitively priced. What more can you ask for? Oh yeah, it's a locally owned franchise. Support your local hardware store.

I love this store. It's the first place I go shopping now because they have everything! I have found organizers I can't find anywhere else like those little wire shelves and interdesign brand things that you can't find anywhere except going all the way to Santana Row. There are employees on the floor and they will offer to help you, not run away from you if you look lost or confused. Here's one of the cool things I saw there: this thing that hang in your shower that keeps the shampoo bottles at an angle so the shampoo is always ready to come out so you don't have to bash the conditioner around to get it out of the bottle. They have some camping items, there's just so much cool stuff you wouldn't expect to see at a hardware store. I like an ACE Hardware, but his is ACE Hardware plus!

Outstanding Customer Service and a surprising amount of merchandise in a relatively small space compared to those large hardware stores. I bring my problem in, and someone helps me fix it, every time! I love that I can bring in the weird screw that needs a mate and they immediately find it for me so I don't have to go through all of the dozens of drawers. And they cut keys that work, first time. AND they take used 4' fluorescent light bulbs so they don't end up in the land fill. I love this place and go there every time I have a hardware/home need.

I've been coming here since I was 14 (back then you didn't need no stink'n drivers license to take mom's station wagon into town). We lived on 40 acres of orchard, had animals in 4H, and developed a subdivision. From laying pellets for our hens to gas lantern mantels for street lights, Rural remains our one stop for "gett'n 'er done" when there are projects around the house. Great folks. And the gals at the register make it worth coming in just to ask directions to Santa Cruz.

Great service, help, and have been relying on them for years.
