5 Speakeasies Hidden in Hotel Rooms - AFAR

"A former suite converted into an unmarked, velvet-draped whisky lounge overlooking a famed Old Course; the cozy, bookable space highlights rare drams—bartenders pour selections from producers such as Glendronach—and caters to guests seeking a refined, golf-course–adjacent whisky experience." - Matt Kirouac

The Best Hotels in the United Kingdom: 2022 Readers’ Choice Awards

"Rusacks was Scotland’s most exciting re-opening in 2021 after a dizzyingly ambitious facelift. The new six-floor wing has 44 rooms, a rooftop restaurant and bar—literally ten paces from the 18th fairway at the Old Course. American owners Marine & Lawn went all out on the refurb with acres of expensive oak panelling, intricate cornicing, and plush fireside sofas in the double-height reception—and that’s just the entrance. There’s Victorian landscapes on the walls, plenty of antlers, Georgian-style dark green bathroom tiles and tartan carpets alongside the odd beaten silver sink, tasselled cushions, and cool jazz on the speakers. There’s a gallery lounge area with full-size snooker table, the very exclusive One Under Bar (originally only for guests), but the real star of Rusacks is the view. From about a third of the 70 original rooms—classic period features, huge luxury beds, lots of space—and those in the new wing you can gaze at the hallowed links, West Sands Beach and the majestic North Sea sky for hours. Dine at either the ground-floor Bridge restaurant or the top-floor Restaurant 18—wall-to-wall glass, spilling onto a terrace with even more stunning views of the golf course and beyond—for seasonal fare from Masterchef: The Professionals winner chef Derek Johnstone. Then retreat to blissful sleep and do it all again in the morning." - Ramsay Short

Just back from a wonderful Two night stay at Rusacks St Andrews. As a golfer, this was on my bucket list, and didn't disappoint. ||We arrived early so we could have drinks on the rooftop bar which had to die for views and overlooked the 18th green on the Old Course. Laura at reception was amazing and even took my number so she could call us when the room was ready. ||Check in was very smooth and we were show to our suite... WOW!! The room was beautiful and had a separate sitting area with a sofa, table and and a lounge chair with again, views overlooking the 18th. ||I didn't want to leave the room but wanted to explore the hotel, it was absolutely stunning, and to top it all off it had the most beautiful snooker room with a full size table, played a few frames with some American guests and then it was back upstairs for dinner at the 18 Restaurant. ||Again the service was 10/10 as was the food. I had the Sirloin steak, it was expensive but cooked to perfection and again with those views it was well worth it. Breakfast in The Bridge restaurant was cooked to order and plentiful. Both days we managed to get a table next to the window with Old Course views, i would highly recommend asking for these tables and watching the golfers on the 1st & 18th holes.||I didn't visit the gym as I couldn't drag myself away from having a few drams on my lounge chair and the snooker room but I image, like the rest of the hotel it would be 5*. ||Thanks again to Laura and all the staff for making our stay one of dreams and the highlight of our Scotland trip.

This place was absolutely top notch. The staff was amazing and scenery was beautiful. This is golf heaven, need I say more. The food was exceptional, and everything is within walking distance. Everything is at your fingertips and definitely bring supported golf shoes or walking shoes. An experience to remember.

Unmatched Outstanding customer service! Not only have they accommodated all our stay requests with an always welcoming smile, the staff enjoy being there one can tell they are all one big happy family. Concierge was also a windpipe musician that made our stay even much more welcoming! The restaurant 18th is outstanding and beautiful! Isla from conditioner service was extraordinary: she internationally send us by DHL some items we forgot at the hotel’s safe, weeks after our stay by just calling them with a Thank you note! I suspect having a similar experience anywhere else! They gained a loyal customer for sure!

Went to the Bridge restaurant to celebrate finishing my master’s degree and had an absolutely lovely experience! They managed to fit me in despite also having to manage a very large party, at a table with an amazing view of the sea. Particular thanks to my server Jack, who gave great recommendations and was very good at his job. The place is, of course, on the pricier side, but is perfect for a special event!

Fantastic stay in a twin room with balcony overlooking the 1st and 18th holes of the Old Course. Everything from the welcome greeting from concierge Gordon, service from staff and quality of decor and furniture is outstanding. The rooftop bar is amazing...... the views are just incredible. I hope I get the chance to stay again. Oh and breakfast was good too.

We came to Russacks St Andrews for a guys only golf trip, expecting a good time — but we didn’t expect to meet “Superwoman” herself at Concierge. Grace was the absolute star of our stay. From the moment we arrived, she seemed to have superpowers: organising, recommending, and somehow always being one step ahead of what we needed. By the end of the trip, we’d nicknamed her “Amazing Grace' and honestly, the hotel is very lucky to have her. If Russacks is smart, they’ll do whatever it takes to keep her, because she turned what was already a special trip into something unforgettable.||The hotel itself was brilliant breakfast was spot on, and having a balcony room to relax on after long days of golf was perfect. Every member of staff we came across was attentive and welcoming. Only slight downside was a few too many flies in one of the under bars, but maybe that’s just part of a Scottish summer (we’ll let the locals debate that one).||Between world-class golf, great food, and a female concierge who could run the country if she wanted to, our lad’ trip to Russacks was one for the books

Many of the hotels we have stayed in during this trip have been understaffed. So the service suffers. Same here. Great restaurant with a view of the sea! Our room was good - comfortable and enough space. Others in our group had much smaller rooms where it was difficult to open luggage! Great location with lots of nearby restaurants, shops and attractions.

Went here to celebrate our wedding anniversary, was greeted by Becky the Assistant Manager who was so polite and attentive, she welcomed us and congratulated us on our 2nd anniversary, she said I have a lovely table at the window overlooking the 18th Hole.|Our starters arrived, followed by the main course and then the sweet. All very delicious. Becky was very knowledgeable in regards to the food and wine, and about the hotel. What a great asset to Rusacks. We will definitely be back again for another meal in the near distant future.

Yelp
18 St. Andrews is located on the top floor of the Rusacks Hotel overlooking the 18th green. Absolutely stunning views of The Old Course, the bridge, the ocean where Chariots of Fire opening scene was shot. Service was good. We had a server who had just graduated from the University of St. Andrews. She was friendly and welcoming which was a nice change having just spent 2 nights in Edinburg. The wine list was not very impressive and my date ended up ordering a bottle of wine that resembled Capri-sun. I couldn't even drink it. We started with the oyster pair (HUGE oysters, very creamy), deer tartare - couldn't get through one bite of it and Pig's Head on Toast. Appetizers were not a good sign for the rest of the dinner. However the tomahawk steak was pretty good, lobster was overcooked. Soufflé was pretty good. Would give it a higher rating if not for the food. I think you really come here for the views, the putting green overlooking the 18th on the balcony, some gorgeous views vs. the food.

Yelp
Outstanding hotel. I would recommend this hotel. Would be back. We had an outstanding stay. Great staff, clean room, good dining.

Yelp
Bartender was incredibly rude. Ordered 2 drinks while sitting at the bar. He started making our drinks got them all made just needed to shake them and then continued to make other drinks and let ours sit. After he had made 8 other drinks I asked him when he would be finishing ours as they only needed shaken and he got biligerant with me. We got up and left and will be sure to tell everyone we know it's not worth the visit. Glad we changed our hotel so we didn't have to stay there and endure the unhappy staff.

Yelp
Can't say enough good things about this place. The snooker room is absolutely amazing. Great service too. Expensive but well worth it.

Yelp
Wonderful hotel with beautiful grounds. We stayed in the cottage at the front of the property and didn't want to leave. The cottage is comfortable, clean and well appointed. Top notch customer service. Hope to return one day.

Yelp
Attended brunch at the 18 rooftop restaurant. The view is beautiful and the staff were friendly and attentive. Our table ordered the oysters and unfortunately 4 of our table felt sick and later found they had the norovirus (food poisoning). The pancakes were delicious and the space was beautiful otherwise.

Yelp
The hotel is right on the golf course and our room was overlooking the 18th green on the 4th floor. I recommend the Bing Crosby room, it has an amazing view! The staff was extremely helpful and courteous with everything from directions to amenities. You get that old time feeling surrounded by history and you can literally see the club house and its a five minute walk to the old course. Breakfast is included with the room and it was great. You can choose continental or order your preference. I would highly recommend this hotel. Note, if you plan on playing the course golfers have to hit off of mats until April. They will supply you with a carry mat. Shopping is a convenient stroll to Tom Morris shop, St. Andrews Links Golf shop, British Golf Museum, and other shops.

Yelp
I would give it zero stars if I could. Hotel is satisfactory. Food is bad, service is worse.

Yelp
Great, historic hotel on the 18th fairway of the Old Course at St. Andrews. Accommodations are small but well appointed. Restaurant and bar are both good. Can't beat the location.

Yelp
EVERY GOLFERS DREAM HOTEL right here... Boarding the OLD course, while also offering high class amenities, um, why aren't you booking this hotel now?? Pros: - 5 minute walk to The Old Course - Complimentary WiFi - Awesome shower heads (but I couldn't figure out how to use it, lol) - Free Breakfast (well it was included in our deal at least) - A mini golf history museum - 3 Restaurants/Bars - Within walking distance to EVERYTHING and super duper close to the bus station! Cons: - No gym - I couldn't figure out the shower AT ALL - Room Service menu looked unappetizing - The hotel restaurants offered foods on their menus that they didn't actually have available - The bed wasn't the most comfortable thing - Bathroom floors are freezing I would in fact stay at this hotel if I ever did come back to St Andrews, solely because I was able to find a recreation center in town... The rest of the accommodations I could handle NO PROBLEM! And the wifi offered was strong enough to stream YouTube videos and make a Periscope! Woo Woo! (How pathetic am I... Don't worry, I definitely went SIGHTSEEING!!!) A stunning hotel from the inside up.... I can tell their working on modernizing this place, next addition: add a gym, for the ladies/gents who don't want to BRAVE THE FREEZING COLD WEATHER and walk 18 holes with their partners!

James T.

Yelp
I don't give 5 stars for anything unless I am so overwhelmed. I would give it 4 and a half it is was optional. The history of this hotel is the biggest point of interest. All the golfing paitings are overwhelming. The staff was very kind and attentative. The rooms were albeit small, very clean and nicely decorated. All the rooms have different names for famous golfers or places. It is also located along the 18th fairway of the 18th hole of the Old Course at St Andrews, and if your room happens to be on that side, the views of the golf course and nearby ocean are fantastic.. I deifinetly would recommend it to others. The only drawback was the wifi was only available in the lobby. Hopefully they will fix that in the future.

Yelp
rusacks hotel st andrews is practically located on the links and could not be nearer the r&a clubhouse / 18th hole of the old course - and therefore has attracted many golfing 'greats' over the years it is a four storey grey sandstone building which has been tastefully decorated - I had a quaint attic room which had victorian en-suite bathroom nice restaurant - one of the best full scottish breakfasts i've ever had - various v comfortable lounges / sun terrace excellent staff/service has small car park - which is transport of choice for most people as no train station here although there is one @ leuchars - the hotel is close to the bus station though

Yelp
You won't find a better location. Worth the extra to have a room looking right out on the 18th green at St Andrews Old Course. The front desk help were charming and helpful too. This is an OLD historic hotel so floors may be a little sloped or uneven. The breakfast is nice too. My only complaint is with the housekeeping. They never restocked the bathroom toiletries or the coffee. It's like they rush in and do a 80% job. The closet doors were left open, dirty glasses weren't taken away, they didn't replace things to there proper place. I've stayed in many nice hotels and they just didn't do a thorough job. But it wasn't a deal breaker. I'd still stay here again...it's views of the golf course and ocean are unbeatable!!! The help was very hospitable!

Yelp
The Rusacks is one of the exceptions in the world of hotels. Part of the MacDonald group of hotels, it manages to achieve the perfect balance of the quality assured by the MacDonald name and the unique charm of one of the oldest hotels in Scotland. The building is beautiful, the service is excellent and the fine dine restaurant offers local scottish food prepared and served to an exceptional standard.

Qype User (Ellisb…)

Yelp
I have never stayed at The Rusacks but have popped in for coffee or lunch many times. It is a lovely hotel with stunning views. If you go for coffee, it is the same price as Starbucks but in a much nicer setting with personal service! I would definitely recommend it.
