Check the hours before going if you want to see the inside of the house. We stopped here on 9/26/2025 late in the day. It was closed but peeked in the windows. Interesting history of the house and those buried in the 1800!s cemetery. Worth the stop. Free. Plenty of parking.

I would love to stop by when it’s open. It was an interesting stop we added on our way through. When we stopped here, no one else was around. It was so quiet and eerie with it being overcast, and it was getting late in the day so it was also getting darker. There is a fee as with all the stops, $5 for a pass to put in your window. Everywhere was well kept. Please take your trash and don’t leave it if you picnic anywhere.

This is such a cool little stop on the scenic white mountains road. The house is well preserved as well as all the articles and items on the inside as well. The barn is amazing place for a quick sit down picnic as well as clean bathrooms to use. The barn has a function hall so events would be wicked nice there was well! Overall great place to stop and learn some history!

It's actually not free, it cost $5.00 per vehicle and cost is for all sites around the White Mountain, and along Kancamagus, sites like Albany covered Bridge, Evans Falls in Pinkham's Grant etc Get caught without a ticket hanging from your mirror or in the windshield so its visible you will get a Ticket by the State Police or Rangers. We witnessed this at Albany covered bridge. Russell Colbath Homestead site is amazing and wish we had stayed longer, spend a while looking around, amazing history, the house was closed my guess since 2020. Had planned on going back it was October I think when we visited. About an hour 30 minutes away, would like to drive by but definitely plan on visiting in the Spring or Summer..

Fun experience. The young redhead running the exhibit was so friendly and outgoing. She provided answers to all our questions. The house was charming and full of interesting items from the 1800's. The grounds were beautiful. Lots of thistle and hops provided beautiful pictures on the front of the house.

A nice stop on road, a chance to get a sense of how life used to be like in this area back in the 19th century. Gives a nice context to the rest of the visit to the White Mountains. The staff is really nice and friendly.

Yelp
Really cool old house. The history is very interesting there and says a lot about the land. Was a little disappointed though that they closed off entering the house in the fall.

Yelp
A must stop when traveling the "Kanc" or Kancamagus Highway. This small homestead is worthy of a visit. It gives visitors a glimpse into what life was like in the 1830's. Along with the family home, there's a wonderful old family graveyard, a newly built post and beam barn with picnic tables, and a short and level interpretive hike through the adjacent woods. On the day we visited, there was a knowledgeable and friendly interpreter in period dress, which certainly made the stop all the more interesting! Special Notes: The new barn can be rented out for family gatherings or community events. Very neat building! Clean bathroom can't be underrated ;o)

Yelp
Stopped in to visit on a trip along the Kancamagus Highway. They have a well kept, historical cemetery, a newer barn constructed using a portable saw mill from trees on site and the original home structure. The house is furnished with period pieces and there is a docent available to answer questions. It's a nice stop to get out and stretch your legs, learn a little history and enjoy a beautiful day. There is a short walking trail on the property and the barn is available for rent.

Yelp
Just a little bit west of Bear Notch Road on the Kanc, this last remaining regional farmhouse is on the National Register of Historic Sites and is worth your time and support. Quaint and charming home with an interpretive woodsy trail behind it, and a small family cemetery nearby with wrought-iron gates that will have you Instagramming. Terrific homestead, well-preserved, and needs every visitor it can get to maintain the only house left standing of its kind in this area. Fantastic stop. A note on the trail itself: While the White Mountains official trail site says "This trail is considered to be a handicapped accessible trail with its wide crushed stone path and wooden bridges," we would not consider this an easy trail for a wheelchair. This is the kind of thing written by people who don't actually have to push wheelchairs around. The pine needles can make the trail quite slippery, there are sloped aspects to it as well as curves that are not terribly wide, and any moisture could make it quite mucky. A motorized scooter may be able to handle it but if you are pushing a heavy wheelchair, this may not be the best trail option. That is the opinion from wheelchair-pushing experienced people. (We suggest Rocky Gorge instead. Great views with a very short paved trail and a small but arched bridge over the ravine).
