I love visiting Birmingham. One of the main reasons is for Russell's Caribbean food shop. Great food at affordable prices – what is there not to love? I ordered oxtail with rice and peas. I also ordered a side of chips. Oxtail is a dreamy meal, but not every restaurant is capable of cooking it. The oxtail is seasoned well, and the meat is soft and not chewy like some places. The large portion is a big size. You could easily save some oxtail for the next day.

Very tasty food. Fresh. So polite staff. Very clean area. Can eat in and take away. Remind me home cooked food.

I’ve been here a couple of times and the soup is always top notch, from looking at some of the reviews I could see some people had faced racism at the takeaway. I’ve not felt this way however everyone’s experience is different. The service could be a lot better, the guy at the till doesn’t look like he wants to be there and the staff don’t say thank you either. But apart from that the soup is delicious, they were generous with their chicken and dumpling portions and the fried dumpling is delicious, almost tastes like a donut with a bread texture and tasted sweet, I deffo recommend to try this with the soup. I’ll give this place 3 stars due to the service not being the best and hearing the reviews about a racist worker. It’s a shame to hear this since the area is full of different types of nationalities, you wouldn’t expect this from a place like this.

I don’t go to Russells very often but I have been going for many years. I ordered jerk chicken chicken chicken that chicken is not jerk it oven baked or boiled with a load of salty fruity sauce. There were so much salt. It was burning my insides, but I also ordered pea soup and it was really nice. I always keep going there because it’s a reasonable price And I like to support my Black businesses if that is the case. I need to do better with regards to the church again. I can’t speak for anything. Anything else my friend had Brown two chicken and said that was also very salty. I want to go into my local Caribbean takeaway and smell the aroma of the chicken jerking that was non-existent.

Went in to buy some yam flour from Rusells supermarket today. The black woman(dont want to say lady, because she isn't no lady!) on the counter was so rude and racist. I have never been so outraged in my life. As soon as we walked in she yelled at us and went on to tell us 'your kind don't come here to buy' YOUR KIND?????? WHAT THE HELL DOES SHE THINK SHE IS SAYING YOUR KIND IN LOZELLS??? She was very rude and didn't deny being racist when confronted. Shocking...and just nasty....I would not be surprised if they go bankrupt. I have many black friends and colleagues ..never have a met such a nasty woman in my life. She didn't even let us look around to buy anything....I am so furious...SHAME ON HER. May God guide and bless her with a heart. We are Muslims by the way.

I feel they should be more vegetarian options. The Ital soup needs more food not filled with potato also less of them noodles more thickness needed for the soup.

Chicken Soup was quite tasty but could have done with a few more pieces of chicken in it as there was only 2 pieces and it's not the first time.

I enjoyed the takeaway food we got, but I did feel the fried dumpings were a little salty, and I could taste the rising agent in then. The other food was really nice, like the vegetable soup. That hit the spot! Also, the rice and fish, we enjoyed it all. I'm thinking about the next visit and what to have next. Parking was fine. Parked outside. Spacious waiting with a dining area, which is also spacious. No problem with staff. Would have appreciated a menu to take with. Would recommend and would definitely return, as we have over the years. Toilet available for customers. The digital menu board / system has not been updated for a while, so confusingly, prices are increased when you ask for them. This could instigate an argument. Management needs to look at this and sort it out ASAP.

Yelp
Really was craving Jamaican food after I left my Jamaican aunt and uncle's home, lol. My cousin recommended this place. There were a few people waiting sitting around the restaurant. The counter had people hanging around. Had to ask who was next or who was waiting. The place was a little run down looking but still clean. They were out of most of the patties and it was midday. I asked for another item but they were sold out of that as well. I don't have high expectations of West Indian places in regards to customer service. The are notoriously rude. However, attitude was not the problem here. It was having times on the menu (also a known problem).

Yelp
When it comes to food there is nothing that beats good and I mean GOOOOD soul food. Soul food is what Mamma cooks and Russell's Caribbean Takeaway does it just like she does. If you want the true taste of Caribbean cooking Russell's is the place to go. The menu is really tasty offering an excellent selection of traditional Caribbean dishes. Curried Goat, Fish Stew, Oxtail Soup and of course Chicken, Rice & Peas are just some of the most popular delights. Snacks include Lamb or beef patties, fried dumplings, plantain, Mmmm I've got to stop, I'm salivating all over my keyboard!! From the counter you can see the chefs prepare your food in a clean, well equipped kitchen, this always fills me with confidence that what I'm eating is going to be good. Although it's a Takeaway there is a large seating area where you're welcome to eat in, there's no waiter/waitress service so you're responsible for clearing your table once you've finished. A full take away dinner (and they are healthy portions) will cost £6.00. If you're looking for a real taste of the Caribbean, this place is a must. When the Jamaican Olympic team come to Birmingham in a few months I wouldn't be surprised to find them at Russell's.

Yelp
I was first introduced to Caribbean cuisine after a friend bought food from Russells, which is apparently well-known in the West-Indian community in Birmingham. And after tucking in to their friend chicken, I understand why! The batter was crisp and the chicken was amazingly succulent. It was well seasoned and a generous portion of meat for the price you pay! The dumplings were equally as delicious with a crisp exterior and moist interior. Unlike most fast-food eateries, the food tasted very fresh and hot. If it had been re-heated then it didn't show in the flavour. The staff members are very jovial and full of playful banter. This seems to appeal to their customers, some of whom were simply sitting around as though it was a community hub! The place is generally clean but I wouldn't call it pristine. Then again - isn't that most fast-food places!

Yelp
Russell's is my second favourite Caribbean takeaway place in Birmingham. They make great tasting food and what's best about this restaurant is that their prices for their food is fair. They are not as over-pricey as some Caribbean takeaway places. If you really want a taste of the Caribbean and crave some authentic tasting jerk chicken or rice and peas; I'd recommend you visit Russell's. I go there once in a while when I'm looking to taste a little soul food, so I purchase some of my favourite dishes. I like the way they cook their curry goat and fish soup so that's what I normally go to Russell's to buy and all my Caribbean friends make fun of me because I normally always order the same thing. I've even been asked by the staff- who are very friendly; whether I'm going to order anything new. My order also ends with a dumpling added to my meal because dumplings are just so tasty. This restaurant has a large sit down area; so if you'd like to sit in there and eat you can do so. I've always been there when it's packed and I've never seen the place not full of a couple of customers at least. Like I said, I think it's the prices which make people continue visiting Russell's.
