Wow! What a place. My husband and I stayed here whilst canoeing the Pontcysyllte aqueduct and taking in the local area (it's a great location and just a short walk from the small town). To stay in a castle dating back to the twelfth century with such beautiful grounds and peacocks, sheep, squirrels, rabbits, ducks, geese.... (to name but a few species) wandering peacefully around the estate is both a sight to behold and a privilege. Our double room was clean and spacious with a comfortable bed and lovely bathroom - all nicely decorated and located in one of the "turrets" so an interesting shape with windows on three sides. Coffee/tea making facilities and tasty biscuits were a nice touch. The history and magnificence of the castle is awesome. Wonky corridors, creaking stairs, nooks and crannies to explore, two separate bar areas and breakfast served in the main hall, which is galleried. Breakfast itself was great - full English options, plus yoghurt, fresh fruit, cereals, pastries, juice, a range of teas and filter coffee.
There's also a restaurant and tented outdoor seating area, though we didn't have the opportunity to sample either unfortunately.
If you're seeking slick perfection with 5-star luxury then don't stay here. If you appreciate culture and the historical significance of staying in such a majestic old building, whilst considering the thousands of people who've walked the corridors and stairs before you over the years, then please give this place a try - you won't be disappointed.
Finally, a shout out the reception staff who were personable, friendly, cheerful and very helpful. All clearly love their job and feel privileged to spend their working day in the splendour of the castle.
