Rwenzori Mountains

A non-volcanic, fault-block range often called the "Mountains of the Moon." Its equatorial location and high altitude support permanent glaciers and a unique progression of vegetation zones, including giant heather and groundsel, offering a distinct alpine environment in Africa.

It's one of the most beautiful, magnificent features on this planet. Oh God! So much beauty in these mountains. It has several ranges & the highest peak in Magherita in Uganda. I appreciate Uganda Wildlife Authority for keeping its beauty intact for not are you even allowed to pick a flower from this protected area. However, the accommodation structures in place are alarming. Outdated & un kept. The rangers are professional & very experienced. They have been up the mountain countless times long enough to see global warming take its toll on the snow of the mountain. Many peaks that once had a lot of snow are left with just a little. This beautiful mountain has all the five regions of the world. The Block Glacier of thos world. The darling Mountains of the moon. I speak of this beauty with so much pride & I'm glad I went up to its peak even when it's a very technical mountain.

The trekking was tiresome but worth it. The view absolutely beautiful

The Mahoma trail was our goal, and we made it. The trekking was rejuvinating, it took us 10 hrs and it was awesome. the Park is beautiful and lush with greenery, the natural sound of the water flowing in the rivers was relaxing. The camp sites need maintenance. Josiah, the Park Ranger assigned to our group was amazing, professional, energetic, knowledgeable and punctual. The porters (Tom and Moses) were professional and helpful. We travelled with 2 boys (6yrs and 13 yrs) and having the help of the porters made the adventure possible for our little one. We loved it and planning to go again. Highly recommended.

Mountain Rwenzori commonly known as the “Mountains of the Moon”, is located in Kasese Western Uganda in the East African Rift Valley and straddles also to the Democratic Republic of Congo. The mountain is the third highest in Africa rising up more than 16,700 feet above sea level and its highest peaks rise above the clouds and are permanently snowcapped. The Rwenzori Mountain ranges are higher compared to the Alps and they have glaciers which are one of the sources of the longest river on earth, the River Nile. Margherita Peak is the highest peak on the ranges making it the 3rd highest peak in Africa together with its twin peak, Mount Stanley, which is within the Mountain Rwenzori National park. The 4th and 5th highest peaks, Mount Speke and Mount Baker, are also within the park. The mountain ranges were first brought to the worlds notice in CE 150 by Alexandrian geographical researcher and photographer, Pletomy, when he described a stunning mountain which he christened “mountain of the moon.” Later in 1899, English explorer, Henry Morton Stanley, was as spell bound as Pletomy when he beheld the ranges and christened them the “Cloud Mountains.” The Mountain park has glaciers, snowfields, waterfalls and has been portrayed as one of the mainly attractive Alpine areas around the world.

The Rwenzori Mountains, previously called the "Ruwenzori Range" (spelling changed around 1980 to conform more closely with the local name Rwenjura),[citation needed] is a mountain range of eastern equatorial Africa, located on the border between Uganda and the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC). These mountains support glaciers and are one source of the Nile river The Rwenzori Mountains reach heights up to 5,109 metres (16,762 ft). The highest Rwenzori peaks are permanently snow-capped. The Rwenzori Mountains National Park and Virunga National Park are located in the range. The mountains are occasionally identified with the legendary "Mountains of the Moon", depicted in Antiquity as the source of the Nile River. Photographer Vittorio Sella took a number of photographs of the Rwenzori Mountains during the late 19th and early 20th centuries, documenting the retreat of the range's glaciers. Sella's photographic work is conserved at the Museo Nazionale della Montagna in Turin and at the Istituto di Fotografia Alpina Vittorio Sella in Biella, both in Italy. The Makerere University, Uganda, also has a selection of his images. The first traverse of the six massifs of the Rwenzori Mountains was done in 1975, starting on 27 January and ending on 13 February.
