8 Japanese Temples You Can Stay In - AFAR

"Steps from one of Japan’s oldest mineral springs at Yonomine Onsen, this guest house offers warm, timber‑accented tatami rooms and multiple bathing options including eight indoor wooden baths and a private open‑air bath; many pilgrims perform water‑purification rituals at the nearby spring before setting out on adjacent Akagi‑goe and Dainchi‑goe trailheads. Breakfast is included, with generous lunch and dinner sets available for purchase, making it a restorative base for nearby hikes." - Lara Dalinsky

This ryokan was very special and old-worldly. We adored our spacious room overlooking the village’s communal spring where we could watch everyone cook their Onsen eggs! |The service was excellent, especially when I lost my mobile phone and the staff made calls and assisted me with being reunited with my phone! |We were also very impressed with Deshira, our hostess who brought our meals and assisted with our room. She was delightful and very helpful. The meals, in our own room, were quite amazing - delicious, varied, surprising and so generous! |And then there were the ryokan’s own spring baths. The private outdoor bath was very beautiful and the indoor bath was atmospheric with its blackened timber walls. |The whole experience was very special and we would highly recommend this guest house for a 2 night stay.

Ryokan Adymaya turned out to be one of the highlights of my 3 week trip to Japan. Partly because I arrived in the middle of my Kumano Kodo Nakahechi hike, after a very challenging 10 mile trek through the summer heat. The opportunity to relax in a spacious room, soak my feet, have amazing food brought to me in my room... oof, I was primed to appreciate those luxuries. If you're hiking, I can't imagine a better splurge. ||But also because Adymaya was so, so nice. I got the deluxe room which somehow included a dining room, a sitting room, a bedroom, a bathroom, an outdoor garden and private bath, and there were a few really exquisite pieces of furniture--the dining table certainly appeared to be real urushi lacquer (tsugaru urushi, maybe?). The amenities were wonderful--great skincare offerings--the meal was beautifully presented, with lovely tableware and seasonal ingredients. ||I ended up spending much more on a ryokan in Hakone, and I only realized afterwards what a premium you pay to be close to Tokyo. At Adymaya, I felt so much more welcome and pampered.||Note that the onsen water is HOT--almost 200 degrees Fahrenheit--I was feeling like a total wimp because I couldn't submerge until I saw a little notecard mentioning the temperature. Luckily, there's a tap to add cold so you can cool the water down until it's JUST bearable, which is amazing.

We stayed here after a day of hiking, and it was a great stay. As others have said, it's a slightly older hotel but I think that is on par for the area. The staff was so friendly and lovely, and we enjoyed having the dinner experience served in the room! The room itself was fine, perhaps a little dated but perfectly adequate with an ensuite and a sink, small fridge, tea kettle etc. The wifi was good, and the staff had organised a vegetarian meal for me. The onsen was lovely, and this is also right across the street from the public onsen. If you want an authentic, comfortable and friendly hotel, this is a great option!

Dated room but very comfortable, right in front of the bus stop of Yunomine, and unesco listed Tsuboyu onsen. Ryokan staff was very kind to lend me a set of towels for use in Tsuboyu before my check-in. Dinner and breakfast were excellent, don’t miss them.

A very authentic and full of charm ryokan, with kind and helpful staff, a beautiful onsen, and the most luxurious 3 course meal. I highly recommend getting dinner there, before falling asleep peacefully in the futton that will be laid out for you. If you enjoy the more traditional japan atmosphere, it's the perfect place and a whole experience. The other reviewers complaining that an oldest ryokan in the village is old are quite something...

If you're lucky to stay here you'll be pleasantly surprised. Indoor/outdoor Onsen on site with an amazing food menu. Friendly staff providing great service.

The place is amazing and the room beautiful. But that's it. For the price, you expect more. The pillows were awfull. The dinner was not good. That's a shame because the staff is so nice and welcoming. When I booked a room for 2-6 people with a private onsen I expected it to contain two persons but only 1 could fit. The public one is way better than the private one. I'm happy to have been in this historical building but I'm not sure it's worth the price.

Really surprised by the two recent poor reviews of this place. Perhaps room type makes a difference? But, for us, this was an incredible experience in every way possible.||We stayed in the room called "Ichii", a Deluxe Room with its own ensuite outdoor hot spring bath (there are large public baths here as well, indoor and out).||The meals were phenomenal. The first night's meal was a full, multi-course kaiseki with the most delicious, locally-raised Mi-kumano beef shabu-shabu I have EVER eaten (melts in your mouth like butter!).||Bedding was traditional, very plush and comfy, on-the-floor futons.||Breakfast was also traditional and very hearty.||The outdoor public bath was lovely.||The service provided by the employees could not have been better.||We paid ¥290,400 or about $1.916 for four people, two nights or about $240 per person per night, breakfasts and dinners included.||We felt it was WELL worth the price.
