Great family run (mother + daughter team) in a very convenient location. 10 minute walk from the train station (stroll down a covered market street "Mochiidono Shopping St."). Lots of options for food and amusement nearby. They did our laundry for us and the breakfast was delicious Japanese style! The single room is very nice, newly renovated with a garden view and all the amenities you could want in a traditional Ryokan type stay. Great dinner recommendation. The mother is a calligrapher and we got to peek into her studio on the way in/out. I only wish we could have spent more time in Nara.

A hidden gem! We had a fantastic time at the Ryokan. Its traditional style, the kindness of the hosts, the location, everything was perfect. We highly recommend the calligraphy lesson. Would have definitely stayed longer if we could!

My girlfriend and I are from Paris, France and we had a great experience in Ryokan Matsumae during our traveling in Japan. The hotel staff was very friendly and helpful. We really enjoyed staying in such a traditional place and definitely I would recommend it.

Just a brilliant example of a traditional Ryokan, very very welcoming and the private calligraphy session with the owner was one of the highlights of our whole stay in japan, Great Japanese breakfast which I sometimes find a bit ropey. Definitely recommended!

This ryokan is quite central in Nara. Only 5 minutes walk to the covered shopping district. The major sites are probably about 30 minutes walk away such as Todaiji. The ryokan's are quite small (roughly 8 tatami mats) and the rooms are aging. However, the shared facilities such as the communal toilet and baths are quite new and look recently renovated. For the size of the room, it was quite expensive ~12,000 yen per night.

This inn is pure old Japanese style. I put a futon on the tatami mat. An elegant inn with a small garden. There are many Japanese antique shops in the neighborhood, amazing.
