Ryokan Tanabe

We stayed at this traditional hotel in Takayama for two nights whilst we were travelling around Japan, and we thoroughly enjoyed our visit.|The staff are welcoming and friendly, and our room, which was decorated and furnished in a traditional Japanese style, was very comfortable. We enjoyed having the kimono and slippers to wear whilst we were in the hotel too.|We had a Kaiseki-style dinner served in our room on one night, and our breakfast both mornings. The food was delicious, and the process of the server setting the table, serving the courses, and explaining the dishes to us was fascinating and enjoyable.|We used the onsen a couple of times whilst we were there, and thoroughly enjoyed the experience. We’d already visited an onsen, so we knew the etiquette, and the facilities were very clean and well-maintained, as you’d expect.|Takayama is a reasonably small town, and very walkable. The hotel is very well located for all the sights you’d want to see, and for the shops, markets, and restaurants.|We enjoyed our stay at this hotel, and would recommend it if you’re staying in Takayama.

We stayed for 2 nights at Ryokan Tanabe as part of a 2 week tour of Japan. The Ryokan is a 90 year old traditional Japanese inn. The rooms are tatami mat, with futons on the floor, and all the rituals of traditional Japanese life. Bathing is i the onsen, public baths in the hot springs. Service was absolutely excellent, and the ryokan had a really homely and cosy feels, in part because of the narrow passages and screened rooms of the traditional Japanese building. We had dinner both nights in the ryokan, with a big array of classic Japanese dishes, beautifully presented. Absolutely delicious.| An experience ot to be missed.

The staff kindness and courtesy during our stay was superb. They outdo themselves in cordiality and assistance. The ryokan rooms were beautifully decorated and maintained. Hida beef dinner for two was a delight and marvelously served, as well as the japanese breakfast. Private onsen is cozy and well equipped and very quiet. Overall experience make you enjoy Takayama beyond our expectations plus it gives you the feeling of being in a real japanese home. Congratulations, and keep the hard work!

Well positioned Ryoken hotel in heart of Takayama. Service was good and room was well equipped. Food was traditional Japanese cuisine. Served in your room which was a novel experience. Extensive starter/main dishes served. Very helpful staff explained the dinner/breakfast. Breakfast is served early as is dinner. Needed a double futon to get a comfy sleep which was easily supplied . Before breakfast the team would arrive. Put your futons /bedding away then prep your table for breakfast. Then after dinner they come to layout your bedding again. Clockwork operation. Small onsen was useful for relaxing. Very efficient service, good facilities and ideal location. Good Japanese experience!

We booked this hotel with dinner included for tonight. Unfortunately, our flight was delayed, which was completely out of our control. We informed the hotel in advance and politely asked if the dinner could be prepared ahead of time so we could eat upon arrival, even in our room if needed. The hotel refused outright, hiding behind what they called “hygiene policy,” and offered absolutely no alternative or solution. When we tried to explain the situation, the reception staff responded rudely and even said that this was a “common Japanese attitude,” which was extremely disappointing and inappropriate to hear. This is the worst experience I’ve ever experienced in Japan. The lack of flexibility, compassion, and basic customer service was shocking — especially for a hotel charging this price per night. We came for both the hotel and the dinner, yet once the money was taken, we were treated like fools with no consideration at all. For a hotel of this level, having no backup plan for something as common as a flight delay is unacceptable. I would not recommend this hotel to anyone who expects understanding, respect, or reasonable service.

It’s a really nice place, very well situated in Takayama. The place is as authentic as can be. Have to admit we had the japanese style room, which wasn’t cheap, but it really lacks of charm, so would probably recommend travellers to take more spacious rooms if they can afford it. The dinner experience was great Oh, and if you’re western, surely ask for an extra futon if you don’t want back pain for 2 days after 😓

We stayed at Ryokan Tanabe for two nights . Room was clean and well presented if slightly jaded. Dinner and breakfast was included. Service was good and friendly, the evening meals, kaiseki (8 courses) were served in our room and were well presented with the added element of you cooking one of the courses over a heated burner. |Breakfast was typical Japanese (so fishy). |Because you eat in your room once the meal is over a team of housekeeping come in to set your futon/make them up. They also come 15 mins before breakfast which (as the latest breakfast is 7:45) means being up and organised which I found slightly invasive. |The ryokan is well sited for the centre of Takayama and a 10 min walk from the station. It’s a good experience if you want to do a Ryokan in Takayama.

Our favorite onsen hotel we have stayed in yet! Lovely staff and it was so clean. The bath products and hair conditioner were extra nice

Ryokan Tanabe give we such a good experience of Japanese historic lifestyle, with excellence breakfast and dinner. The staff can speak English. The bed and the room is so cozy. The Onsen was small but not crowded. We very much see ourselves returning to Takayama and would like to retune to Ryokan Tanabe for sure:):):)!!!
