Twice I’ve stayed here, way back in 2018 and 2023, I’m part of a group, and this is the hotel/ryokan they used, in 2018, as a solo, I like the room but I more like it when in 2023, I traveled with my sister and the room they gave as, were so beautiful like a single home..the only thing is, you have to use a real key, it’s not digital but the bathroom were modern western style…the foods? So delicious!! I’m so happy that the travel agency use their ryokan for their clients..there is a onsen too in the facility but none in your room..it run by generation family members..the ryokan is walking distance from the JR station..and also close to the main center of attraction..

Just beautiful. Great location, easy for most things and a wonderful service experience. Rooms were large, Onsen was fabulous and meals were amazing, never ending and delicious. The chef has been there many many years. Would go back again if returned to Takayama. Been here twice now.

Great experience at this lovely traditional hotel in the center of Takayama. Just 9 minute walk from the train/bus station. We stayed 2 nights in room 13 which had its own little onsen with a cedar bath (although it didn’t use spring water like the communal bath). They provided us yukatas (cotton robes and sashes) to wear inside the Inn. Ladies get to pick the color :)||We were happy to have a little alcove in our room with 2 chairs and a small table where we could hang out when in the room. The room is otherwise sparse and they lay out the futons after you eat your meal at the low table on the floor in the center of the room. Not the easiest thing to sit on the floor for a 3-course dinner but we managed. there is a nice seating area with the a coffee machine in the lobby. ||They were willing to work around food restrictions (no seafood for one of us) because we provided the info in advance. The breakfast and dinners were traditional Japanese cuisine. You do not select from a menu. ||The staff was very nice and made the experience great.

It’s the only ryokan we’ve stayed in so nothing to compare. We were in a travelling group so ate our meals together downstairs. Unfortunately the set piece dinner service was rushed and completed in 1hr 20min so not as enjoyable as it should have been. There were no choices at breakfast. Room 75 was spacious but inexplicably provided a tv which seems inappropriate. On arrival no attempt had been made to heat the room so it was like an icebox. The handheld control for the a/c was in Japanese so difficult to make sense of. A request for help to reception produced two gas heaters to supplement the a/c. The hot spring bath was clean but dingy. Altogether a bit of a disappointment.

I really loved our stay there! The staff was very friendly, helpful and professional. Our room was spacious and clean, I rested very well during our stay. Location-wise it was perfect, we could reach everythin leisurely by foot. The food was also great! If I went back to Takayama, I would definitely come back to the ryokan tanabe :) thank you!

Tanabe was, without question, the saddest and most depressing stay we have ever had in Japan.|Ryokan Tanabe has the vibe of a run-down fleabag hotel from the 1950’s. It’s dingy and has a mildew smell throughout. I couldn’t even use the elevator due to the smell.|The rooms are bleak. No place to relax in our room due to the silly protocol of removing the lumpy futon at 6:45 before the very average breakfast could be served. We could’ve gone down to the “lounge” but that was just another layer of ick. And the bathroom…fitted out for leprechauns! My 5’11 husband had trouble fitting through the doorway and gave up attempting a shower in the weird plastic bathtub. I’m used to smaller facilities in Japan, but this was absurd. |The dinner and the breakfast were served in the room and both were poorly prepared and unappealing. The beef was cooked over a steamer/bunsen burner and looked and tasted like a cheap cut of shaved beef. |The place needs a good scrubbing, new staff and perhaps even then a bulldozer might be the best choice.|I almost forgot to mention the “ onsen”. I looked in the door of the women’s baths and was horrified. Dark and dingy, there 2 older women soaking in the tiny room that, again, had the pervasive mildew smell. There’s was no way that I would step my toes in those tubs!||I can’t recall what we paid for this dreadful experience. Whatever it was, it was too much!! A chain motel on the highway wouldn’t been preferable to this mess.|I would encourage those seeking a traditional ryokan to avoid this place. It had a nice location, near the old shops and river, but please don’t waste your time at Tanabe.

This was our first experience in a ryokan and I’ve to say it will be unforgettable. At Tanabe we had always an extremely kind a ready assistance. We stayed at the second floor with a view on at tree in a secondary road, in a wide and beautiful traditional room. We ate a delicious kaiseki dinner and breakfast dressed in colored yukata. In my opinion this is a golden experience for those who want to have a real Japanese experience. Body and hair products furnished by Tanabe are excellent. I really enjoyed the practice of the Japanese bath, no reservation needed and never crowded. After dinner the staff set up our futon, so so comfortable.|We really suggest Tanabe!

In my opinion, it's just a basic ryokan.|It's clean and efficient, but nothing special. I don't like to eat in the some room where I have breakfast and dinner.|You have to eat and drink what they bring you. No choice. Just Japanese breakfast and only one small cup of green tea. It's a bit of " boarding school" type.|The best thing is the location.|Beds were comfortable( on the floor)

Yelp
Ryokan Tanabe give we such a good experience of Japanese historic lifestyle, with excellence breakfast and dinner. The staff can speak English. The bed and the room is so cozy. The Onsen was small but not crowded. We very much see ourselves returning to Takayama and would like to retune to Ryokan Tanabe for sure:):):)!!!
