A ryokan/ bath house type of lodging is very unique to Japan so we wanted to experience it for at least one night. You're guaranteed to pay 3 times more than more economical lodging options (e.g. AirBnB. guesthouse, etc.), but I think it's worth it for what's included! The highlight definitely was the kaiseki dinner/ breakfast; both were INCLUDED with your booking. Kaiseki is a traditional multi-course Japanese meal. There aren't very many places in the USA that do it right and it's always usually very expensive anywhere you go. The fact that all three of us were getting it with our stay was a steal, in my opinion!
First, to describe our stay. Staff was easily very accommodating and hospitable. We were able to leave our luggage there in the morning before our check-in time and they even had it delivered to our room for when we would eventually arrive. We selected our dinner time (6-8pm), then when we came back, we were greeted in the hotel lobby with hot tea and packaged manju. Afterwards, we were led up to our room. Rooms are traditionally Japanese meaning that they are outfitted with tatami mats and sliding shoji doors. You do have a modern toilet and sink and also your own private bath in case you don't feel comfortable using the public bath (located on the 6th floor). We put on the yukatas that were provided to us and went down to the dining room.
As mentioned, dinner was amazing! Dishes came out gradually as they were prepared fresh by the full service kitchen staff, including a very prestigious looking executive chef. The multi-course meal started off with several small appetizers, then moved on to sashimi, vegetable served with fish, a flame grilled meat, steamed food, deep fried food, vinegar-ed food, miso soup with rice, and then dessert. We were offered very general descriptions and there was so much to absorb but all was easily enjoyable and was certainly one of the most memorable meals of our trip! Not only was it full of flavor, but it tasted light and clean. We hadn't originally scheduled to have breakfast, but after that meal we changed our minds when they asked if we were scheduling our reservation for breakfast.
When we came back to our rooms, our futons had already been laid out and prepared by the staff. I slept on a couple of futons while in Japan. All were surprisingly very comfortable and the ones here were especially so! Such a unique stay! I loved everything about it and I'm glad that we collectively decided to fork out just a little more to make it happen.
