This was one of the best hotel experiences I’ve ever had. We stayed as a family of four for two nights, and the staff were incredibly friendly and helpful always ready to assist us with anything we needed. The Ryokan itself is beautiful and full of rich history. Its location is perfect, right in the center of Kurashiki, Japan’s famous denim town. The food was absolutely amazing, every dish was full of flavor and clearly prepared with care by a skilled chef. The shared bathroom was clean, and it was a great opportunity to experience a traditional Japanese bath. If you book this hotel, don’t forget to take a short evening walk through Kurashiki, it’s truly beautiful.

Very luxurious Ryokan. The building is in very good shape. There is a lot of very friendly and helpful staff. The dinner will be served in the room and consists of several courses and is very delicious. Even though I was warned that there are several guests and it could therefore become a bit noisy, I have not seen or heard other guests during my stay there. The staff was very helpful when I turned ill during my stay and had to go to the hospital. They were extremely forthcoming, arranged a taxi in the middle of the night and send well wishes to my room etc. The gentleman at the reception speaks very good English and even German. Please note that the rooms have a sink and toilet, but no private bathroom. There is a onsen style bathroom for all guests. Since I had been to public onsen in Japan before, that was no problem for me and I enjoyed it a lot. The Onsen is very clean and cleaned multiple times per day. I have not encountered other guests in the bath during my stay.

A heritage Ryokan right in the historic district. The location is wonderful. The staff is courteous and helpful. The onsen is just ok. The Japanese style room that I stayed in had a private bath, which was quite nice. The food is beautifully and thoughtfully prepared. Dinner is served in the room and the serving ladies were very sweet. I stayed three nights and each dinner was different. Ask started with an appetizer, then sashimi, then 5 more courses. It's definitely a culinary experience! In retrospect I wish I had not stayed in the Japanese style room. Sleeping on a futon mat with a beanbag for a pillow was pretty miserable. They offered to move me, but I chose to keep the private bath. Cars are not permitted near the Ryokan, but you can reserve a parking space at the sister hotel around the corner. Just make sure to make the request before you arrive.

A beautiful, traditional Japanese inn along an idyllic stretch of Kurashiki's historic quarter. The staff were very friendly, and extremely attentive - we were actually the only guests there the first night, and it felt like we were getting the VIP treatment (and were to have the onsen to ourselves!). It's more expensive than a standard hotel, but it's perfect if you want to experience a ryoken. ||We didn't get evening meals (plenty to eat in the vicinity - we went to the curry place 'Kappa' as recommended by the staff, it was delicious). The traditional breakfast was very nice though, and less 'challenging' than other traditional meals we've had elsewhere.||Overall, would certainly recommend. The Bizen quarter itself is absolutely beautiful. We were lucky enough to see lots of cherry blossoms in the park about 10 mins walk from the ryoken (this was in mid march).

Excellent food for a quick lunch. Good selection of sake. Nice cold beer on a scorching hot June day. Lovely welcoming service from the door men. Very good value at less than £40 for more lunch than we could eat. Not too crowded either. Location perfect next to the canal.

The place is very nice. Location is awesome. This is a classic ryokan. The dinner is very good but be prepared because it is totally Japanese omakase with some excotic things, so as the breakfast. No beds in the room, but a Japanese futon in the tatami floor. Bathroom is the common bath with its onsen style shower. Good place to have the full Japanese experience.

We stopped into the Tsurugata in the incredibly charming and well-preserved Bikan district of Kurashiki for one night, and we are thrilled that we did. This 300 year old ryokan delivered on charm and on hospitality! We stayed in the luxury room, which was spacious, and had a private garden. Dinner was served in the room, on the floor, with eleven courses of tremendously delicious Japanese cuisine. Service was simply exquisite. Cannot believe the luxury for the value. Our next night was at the Yoshida Sanso ryokan in Kyoto, which is known as one of the most luxurious ryokans in Japan. Candidly, it was a bit of a let down after the superior experience we had at the Tsurugata! ||Highly recommend this place, and the Kurashiki old town! And be sure to walk the old town at night in the lovely Yukata they provide to you!!

This place was a bit of a dump. We did not skimp but were in a very, very small Japanese-style room. No view and the airconditioner blew air but did not cool the room. We had to open the windows to try and reduce the stuffiness and heat. The room and toilet room both had a bad smell. The picture that hangs in Ryokan style rooms was tatty and torn and had a plastic flower arrangement in front of it. Breakfast was okay but nothing memorable. ||I had previously stayed in one just around the corner that was truly a great ryokan to stay at, Yoshii Inn. If you can get a room there, that is the place to be that has all the finishing touches and a very special vibe. This place, Tsurugata, has seen better days and is probably struggling to survive after the pandemic. I don't recommend staying here.
