Elma Arts Complex Luxury Hotel

"Finally, there’s a chic place to stay between Tel Aviv and Akko. The privately owned Elma, equal parts art space and hotel, is in Zichron Ya’akov—about a 75-minute drive from Ben Gurion Airport. There’s not a whole lot to do other than take in some art, eat, and relax—perhaps at the property’s small but efficient spa—but that’s the whole point of booking a room here. You’ll have plenty of artsy options to choose from: A large recital hall designed for acoustic performances (it’s home to the only pipe organ is Israel), a smaller jazz-bar performance space, and an impressive art collection as well as temporary exhibitions that attract even non guests. This stylish hotel attracts a mix of Israelis on weekend getaways, European tourists, and executives on company retreats—the latter will be relieved to find that the Wi-Fi is free and fast—but anyone with a taste for a modern aesthetic will be glad to step foot inside. Walk down long halls to guest rooms, and you’ll feel like you’re strolling through a museum. Rooms are fresh and modern, with white plaster walls and touches of walnut. Traveling with kids under 12? They’re not allowed in rooms in the main building, but they’re perfectly welcome in the hotel’s cottages, complete with patios (request one with a sea view—you won’t regret it). There’s also a shaded wading pool, kids’ club with art and music activities, and child-friendly menu at the farm-to-table on-site restaurant, where the dinner is good but the breakfast is brilliant. The Elma doesn’t offer car service, and taxis are limited, so do yourself a favor and rent your own. If you do, you can drive to the town of Caesarea about 20 minutes away from the hotel, to visit beautiful ruins and beaches. The area also has wineries, and in a nearby village, you’ll find cafes and restaurants when you’ve had your fill of art and want to fill up on delicious local cuisine. Editor's Pick: Hot List 2016"

"Essentially a grand-scale gallery and performance space with meticulously designed guestrooms, this seaside retreat south of Haifa defies easy categorization. Built in 1968 as a sanitarium, the sinuous white building won Yaacov Rechter the coveted Israel Award for Architecture. Arts patron Lily Elstein bought and reimagined the space in 2005, enlisting Rechter’s son to oversee the transformation to boutique-hotel-cum-museum-and-theater. In a nod to the property’s original purpose, the on-site spa is truly sublime, so, if you’re not relaxed enough from catching a Debussy sonata before bed or waking up to expansive Mediterranean views, head there for the signature massage, which includes shiva lingam stones and, naturally, music therapy."

Architectural Reboot: The Return of Brutalism

"In the travel world, there are guided city tours around concrete landmarks in Sydney and Washington, D.C. Meanwhile, a number of these abandoned buildings have been reimagined as hotels, including Israel’s Elma Arts Complex in a former sanatorium."

Complex is nice and quiet and has lovely climate. The pool area was very nice. Walking distance to the center of town. We went for one night over the weekend, the food was very good for buffet food, a very nice range, fresh, tasty and dishes I've never seen before on a hotel buffet. We ordered some extra wine, it was white but not chilled, so that was a bit of a downer (though it was tasty). It's also true what some other reviewers wrote that some of the rooms and hallways could do with some re-touching, looks like it hasn't had much since it launched 10 years ago. There are a couple of good reasons for that. On the Saturday morning there was an hour guided tour - the guide was really excellent, told the story of the hotel, its artwork, and the local history. I cannot overstate how important this was to understanding this hotel, its layout, its design. There is a world class concert hall (we didn't go to the show) and art all over the walls, hence the name: this is not just a hotel, it's a life's work and a mission of the owner, and for that it is quite unique.

Elma Hotel and Art Complex offers a unique blend of hospitality and culture. During our one-night stay as a couple over the weekend, we were pleasantly surprised to receive complimentary tickets to a concert and a guided tour of the hotel’s history the following day. The overall hospitality was good—nothing extraordinary, but certainly welcoming. One of the standout perks is the late check-out on Saturdays until 2 PM, allowing guests to enjoy the hotel a bit longer, which is a definite plus. However, for a five-star luxury hotel, there are several areas that need improvement, particularly in services and amenities. Given its remote location, the hotel lacks essential five-star facilities, especially when it comes to dining options. The gastronomic experience fell short of expectations, with limited alternatives for restaurants and bars. While it’s understandable that winter might bring reduced services, the pricing and branding as a luxury hotel set higher expectations. The breakfast was decent—nothing particularly innovative, but considering that it was a Saturday with limited service due to Shabbat, it was acceptable. Overall, Elma is a beautiful place with an interesting concept. It’s a good choice for those looking for a unique experience, though some aspects could be enhanced to truly meet five-star luxury standards.

The term luxury is used a bit too loosely here. It all started when we checked in, with a pretty rude/agest/racist front desk person, who we saw be really nice to an older white couple right before us, was short unhelpful and dismissive. The room itself was once nice, but you could Tell they used cheap solutions for a room that had a lot of potential. From unfixed light switches, curtains that were so bad at blocking out light it was like sleeping outside, cracks, broken furniture, to a coffee table that had seen better days. Additionally, the hotel is not accessible in any way. We understand that it's an historic building but the whole cottage room area had no ramp or elevator for elderly people or families with babies. On the first morning there was no where to sit so we asked a staff member to clean a vacant table. It took 15 minutes. The peak was when we went out at 11 am on our second day, ensured the "please clean" sign was up, and returned at 4 to the same room we left. The best thing was the view, location and breakfast. I'm guessing the downfall of this hotel will be the maintenance management and the slow service. Highly overrated and overpriced.

Beautiful location. The management has a lot of improvement to do to get to a 5 star and charge that much. Those rooms are not luxury rooms, so at least make sure they’re ready when the guest arrives. To pay that much money and chase for towels and robes… Clean your tables at dinner so your guest doesn’t have to clean it before they sit to eat. Have your staff off the phones while they work… This is a constructive criticism

My mother and I went together for a special spa vacation and we had the best time! From the moment Victoria checked us in, I knew it would be great. She was so helpful, attentive and kind!! The hotel was nice, great breakfast and service overall. The views can’t be beat and the location near the midrachov shops was perfect for us!

My stay at the hotel was the worst stay ever in any hotel - nothing I have asked was respected (for instance not to put any perfume in the room since I am alergic), but this was nithing compared to what I did find: the room was not clean, the bed - horrible, lighthing did not work well or did not work at all (I could continue and give more details including the horrible attitude from a lady called Adi, apparently the vice manager, she strictly yelled at me, she was frightening)|I realise from other people who know the place that it is a very neclected place, trying to look beautiful, very deceiving. Horrible.. Don't go there!!
