"On a rocky plateau overlooking the Dead Sea lies the 2,000-year-old cliff-top fortress of Masada. Next to Jerusalem, it is the most popular destination for tourists visiting Israel . In addition to its sheer natural beauty, Masada is also the setting of one of the most powerful and tragic stories in Jewish history. During the First Roman-Jewish War in 73 or 74 C.E., 960 Jewish zealots—men, women, and children—committed suicide on top of the mountain rather than submit tocapture by the Romans. Among the ruins are the Northern Palace, an ancient synagogue, and a Roman-style bathhouse with mosaic floors. The ascent to Masada can be done by cable car or by walking up the Snake Path, a moderate climb which should takearound an hour."

The 11 Best Things to See and Do in Israel

"Perched on a plateau 100 km south of Jerusalem on the Dead Sea's edge, the Herodian fortress of Masada is famed as the refuge of Jewish rebels besieged by Rome in 73 CE and today is a potent symbol of Israeli determination; you can reach the site by cable car or hike the Snake Path (60–90 minutes) for sunrise views over Jordan, but be prepared for extreme heat in summer and occasional trail closures, and note practical details like park hours (open daily from 8am until roughly 3pm–5pm), an admission fee of $9 USD, and a roughly 90-minute drive from Jerusalem. It's beautiful and I had a great time. It's a Great visit and I would definitely recommend going. There are 2 sides, one side has a gondala and one side you have to hike. We accidentally went to the side with the hike. It's is a super easy hike that takes about 15 min actually. It looks bad in photos but I promise you it's not bad at all.

If you're fit, very fit, and its early spring, late autumn or winter - opt for going up using the "snake route" (named for the turns). It is a very steep beautiful climb. If you're not as fit opt for taking the back trail, a shorter steep climb. And if you're wise, go up using the cable car, enjoy this beautiful, historic archeological site, and the Wonderful views, and head down using the trail (40-60 minutes). If you get there by sunrise, you're in for one of the prettiest ones.

It had bee n a dream for me to visit Israel and this amazing historic place. I went with the cable and spent 4 hours visiting this place, climbing every stair, I loved it. I couldn't visit the museum. But next time will definitely do. Every historic site left me wanting to learn more, to see more. I'm back at home. Is already 1 week that I'm back at home and I want more. Definitely coming back soon again. 🙏

Outstanding historical site! Always dreamed to visit this place and I must say, I was not disappointed. The views from up there are amazing, you can sea the Dead Sea, the desert, the mountains and also the ancient Roman camps and the ramp they built to vanquish this marvelous fortress, built by Herode the Great. There is a cable car to bring you up.

Visiting Masada is one of those experiences that stays with you forever. The site combines history, breathtaking scenery, and a unique energy that makes it a must-see for anyone traveling to Israel. The fortress, perched on top of a mountain in the Judean Desert, offers stunning views of the Dead Sea and the surrounding arid landscape. It’s a place that makes you feel small in the face of nature’s grandeur and the depth of its history. The historical narrative of Masada is very well presented: every corner tells the story of the last Jewish stronghold against the Roman Empire, and walking through its ruins feels almost like stepping back in time. Whether you hike up the Snake Path at sunrise or take the cable car, reaching the top is equally impressive. The facilities are well maintained, the visitor center is modern, and access is clear and organized. I recommend bringing water, sun protection, and comfortable shoes—especially if you plan to hike up. Masada is not just a place to see; it’s a place to feel. The combination of history, desert silence, and spectacular views makes it one of the most memorable sites in all of Israel. Highly recommended.

It is a much better time coming here to explore the ruins rather than escape the Romans. It’s one of the most fascinating historical sites in Israel with lots of great explanations in multiple languages and, of course, incredible views.

Masada is a great national park! Though it may be small, the amazing park has everything! Trails, restrooms, and even a small museum in the visitor center. There is a walking trail and a cable car, and the walking trail is long and hard. I suggest the cable car. The top of the mountain is beautiful, with stunning views of Israel, the Dead Sea and Jordan. Masada sits close to highway 90 as well as another highway coming from the east. Overall Masada is a one-time experience although I would love to come back ;)

One of my favorite National Park in Israel. No trip to Israel is complete without visiting this place. It is filled with so much history with a breathtaking view of the Dead Sea. The best time to visit is sunrise. This is a place that is usually very busy on weekends so it is advisable to schedule your arrival during the week. There are a few ways to get up: 1. Snake path - This is the long path up to the mountain. •Length: The route climbs to a height of 350 meters, and is 2.7 Km long. •Opens for ascent every day one hour before Sunrise and closes for descent one hour before closing time. •On very hot days the Snake Path ascent closes at 09:00AM and the descent closes at 10:00AM. When heat is extreme, the Snake Path ascent closes at 08:00 and the decent closes at 09:00. The descent via the Roman Ramp is open as usual. 2. The Roman ramp path - This is the short path. Starting point: West entrance. •Length: 0.7 Kilometers 3. Cable car - A round trip by cable car will cost 23$. • You need to make a reservation! •Starts working at 8AM!
