The Talbot Inn, Mells, Somerset - Explore & Book

"Beautiful style, excellent service, great food... all things that never go out of fashion. Owners Matt, Charlie and Dan once ran Babington House, so they learnt these mantras at the top before opening their own boutique property, The Beckford Arms. It was such a runaway success that they soon expanded their stable to include The Talbot (and later The Lord Poulett Arms and The Bath Arms). As is customary, they wrapped the spoiling qualities of a top hotel in the relaxed comfort of a country pub, and added fantastic pricing to the mix. If you're after a slice of picturebook English countryside, this is it. Beautiful, historic Mells has cute 15th-century stone houses and a Grade I-listed church, and the hub of the village is this ancient coaching inn, dating back to 1480. Set around a quaint cobbled courtyard is a winding warren of beamed rooms with modern Farrow & Ball hues. Downstairs in the pub, we drank ale by a roaring fire, and dined by candlelight, then wandered up to our stylish bedroom where we slept in absolute peace. It was no surprise the place is usually abuzz with locals and visitors alike. Highs Stunning country-style rooms with contemporary art, gorgeous bathrooms and insanely comfortable beds The cute village of Mells brims with history, and there are lots of lovely countryside walks around (wellies available to borrow) Staff are genuinely friendly and service is excellent Events such as music or film nights or even supper clubs are fun add-ons The little things: hot-water bottles, Bramley products, framed old maps and antique Vanity Fair prints Lows Some very low beams and ceiling in places You have to go downstairs to get fresh milk for your tea No bathrobes or wardrobes, just hangers on pegs As the only pub around, it's likely to be busy and some rooms may experience noise (although we didn't hear a thing) No disabled access" - Liz Simpson

Service was friendly and atmosphere cosy but the food was really underwhelming. My burger had zero flavour and I had to send back. The chin didn’t come with anything else, not really a complete meal or filling. The ploughman’s presentation needs serious work, looked like a child has composed it. Would be better with crackers instead of focaccia.

I didn’t stay here, just came for dinner and I have to say it’s one of my fave gastropubs in the UK now. Food was good of course as you’d expect but the ambience of the back restaurant with its fireplace and beautiful decor was dreamy. Service also was outstanding! I wish I’d got our waitress’ name because she was brilliant. A real treat.

Visited for a weekday pub lunch with the family. Seven of us at the table, could not fault the place. Food was excellent, service was friendly and prompt. We have not stayed in the rooms as we are reasonably local, we will definitely be visiting again for lunches and dinners.

Had such a lovely time here with family yesterday. Friendly, attentive staff allowed a relaxed and enjoyable time. Warm fire, great food, beautiful setting. Just what we wanted. So pleased we have found this local gem.

We absolutely loved this location. The friendly staff made it possible to get a table for us spontaneously. The location is just how I want a pub to look like. Cozy but tidy. Food was very delicious, so that I would definitely recommend.

We had lunch at The Talbot with our small dog. What a treat. A beautiful old inn with a number is small dining areas and good bar. A warm welcome, first rate service in a relaxed atmosphere, good menu and absolutely superb food. All in all a very good lunch and a thoroughly enjoyable hour and a half in a beautiful setting. Thank you.

Google
Lovely pub with great rooms and staff that couldn't do enough to make your stay the absolute best it could be. Reasonable bar prices, excellent breakfast selection. Only downside is parking. No dedicated parking for staying guests. Which means trying to park along a narrow road and compete for spaces with day visitors. Beautiful setting though, and would definitely recommend.

Absolutely loved our stay at this smashing hotel. The staff were without exception terrific and friendly. Special mention for Olly who helped us when we first arrived made sure we were comfortable and had a drink. Lovely touches at the hotel - fresh milk delivered to your room plus scones in the afternoon etc etc

Yelp
Ploughman lunch is tops. Great hard cheddar, local, plus ham, veggies, fruits, chutney and... ambiance. Inside is old school Brit; outside sunny day cafe. Pleasant staff, cute little village - be sure to see the church down the alleyway outside the inn. And, if you can find Nunney, there's the remains of a castle ...a small one albeit, but accessible and fun for kids' imaginations.

Yelp
What a wonderful experience. Happy to seat us with a couple of hours notice on a busy Sunday, we arrived and were immediately told we could bring the dogs in (we'd been on a long walk). We took drinks on the patio and ordered food, going inside to our table when the food was served. The pub is beautiful, the dining hall a wonderful mix of old and new, and the Sunday roasts incredible- generous portions of soft, rich meat, great selection of sides and flavourful deserts. Wonderful, thoughtful service from multiple staff rounded out an exceptional trip. Recommended.

Yelp
My review is based on a single visit only, just time for a couple of glasses of wine. I came at night so could only imagine the beauty of the village. In order to enter the pub you walk through an arch and cross a coutyard, all very romantic. What I loved most of all was the large number of dogs in attendance, making this a true country pub (I know, I should venture out of London more often ...). The house wine was excellent and they had a good choice of beers, as you'd expect. I will make sure to find an excuse to return for a proper visit soon.

Yelp
The Talbot Inn is a good pub and restaurant in the beautiful village of Mells, near Frome. The food is good, quite traditional...sausages, lamp chops and pies and tarts, good sauces. I took a friend and he loved it. I wasn't so pleased with my veggie option they sweetly accomodated me with. Like lots of places, the veggie option wasn't so good. Still, it's a lovely place with a dark interior and high settles, very English Countryside. They also have several beautiful rooms, which you can see on their website. http://www.talbotinn.com If you're here in the dayime, I thoroughly recommend a trip to a nearby plant nursery in the most picturesque setting for any nursery I've ever seen, run by a lovely woman with lots of gardening experience.

Yelp
Very well run pub in the historic and picturesque village of Mells. The pub is a c16th century coaching house that has seperate bar for drinkers and fantastic resturant. In summer there is a superb beer garden and sheltered, cobbled courtyard. Children welcome. Whether it is poping in for a drink or an evening meal it is a fantastic place.
