"Built between 1503 and 1508, this Gothic Renaissance relic with Moorish arches was the first hospital in the New World. Named for the patron saint of cures, it was designed in the shape of a Latin cross—the center nave was used for worship and the two lateral sections housed patients. While some walls were torn down in 1911 to avoid collapse, the resulting ruins are still staggeringly beautiful, revealing a story of pirate attacks, hurricanes, earthquakes, and revolution. Visit on Sunday night, when there’s live music, merengue, and salsa dancing in front of the ruins."

Probably my favorite of the UNESCO sites in Santo Domingo. It is not as grand or obvious as some of the others. It is unassuming, tucked into a corner really. You could easily miss it if you did not know to go look for it. There was a group of high school kids hanging out there when I went. They were all very respectful. They had no idea that I speak Spanish, but they were being polite and simply hanging out in the ancient ruins. It created an interesting tableau of contrast- the old world with the new. A beautiful piece of history to visit if you are in town.

It took us almost an entire day to see so many "first things" in the New world, here in SD's Zona Colonial. This first hospital was adjoined by a small Church and is located in the center of the old town, 5 min from the San Francisco "first Monastery". The hospital is further ruined with pigeons waste, so look up and down while you're exploring the site.

First hospital in America, and instagrammable AF! Great stop in any zona your, you get to know some history and also take some awesome pictures. If you’re searching for a safe place to park the parking place by the ruins it’s a great spot and has security all day and all night. So for a 100 pesos yo can have the peace of mind of parking safe

Its quite the historical place, currently the streets around it are being remodeled and access to the ruins is restricted but you can still take pictures from the front side.
