2/1/26–My husband said to me, “We still have on-board credit we need to use,” so he wanted to book a tour. I chose a tour that had nothing to do with beaches—not even a little sand. The only option left was Fort Napoleon.
The ticket said to be at the port at 12:15 p.m. I was already in town, drinking coffee and walking, living my best quiet life. As 12:15 got closer, I sat at the Explora tent. While talking with another couple, they asked me where I was from. When I answered, the gentleman sitting next to me said, “I’m from there too!”
Just like that, we made a new friend—traveling solo at 82 years old, now living in Florida. He told us all about his travels. “Gray hair is a crown of splendor,” after all (Proverbs 16:31).
People started arriving… but two people were late. We waited, and waited, and waited. Folks, this is why I don’t like tours—you are at the mercy of everyone else. There should be a 10-minute grace period. If you’re not there, the bus should leave. Even the Bible says, “Let all things be done decently and in order” (1 Corinthians 14:40).
Finally, we boarded, and our guide took us to Fort Napoleon. There was a walk uphill—not much for me, but for someone like George and my husband, it was a real trek. Be advised: the tour was interesting. Lots of history, then at the end some rum and local homemade sweets.
My favorite part? Fish croquettes. Always the food.
Since I had been awake since 3:30 a.m., by this point I was feeling it. I started to get sleepy. I only took small sips of rum, but even that was enough to make me ready for bed. “The spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak” (Matthew 26:41).
It’s a great island. I wanted fish when we got back, but the fisherman said something like “no more fish.” Anyhow, I ordered salmon through in-suite dining when I boarded my ship and all was well.
All good. ☀️
