Actually, I didn't have time to visit the National Art Gallery. However, I usually make it a point to visit them because in every city I travel to, I visit the galleries; they hold so much meaning and the history of a country. I was particularly interested in this statue, Bulgarian Woman, which the artist Velichko Minekov created in 1961. I don’t know exactly what it represents—perhaps the pain of women during wars—but it was very interesting to me. I searched: A Bit of Context on the Statue
The statue you saw, Bulgarian Woman (1961), is indeed known for its heavy, grounded form. Velichko Minekov often focused on themes of motherhood, strength, and the struggles of the Bulgarian people, so your guess about it representing the "pain" or "endurance" of women is very much in line with his artistic style.
